Title: Jim Park Voting: AFL 2021 Rd 3: Carlton vs Fremantle
Post by: crashlander on April 04, 2021, 09:11:51 am
Voting is as usual: you have 15 votes to award pretty much as you will, with the following provisos:
[1] 15 votes in total, no more, no less.
[2] No more than 10 votes for any one player (even Cripps)
[3] Three players at least must get a mention.
[4] A grade for the game, A+ (what I want to see) to F-.

There are weeks when 15 votes simply isn’t enough, and there are weeks when 15 votes feels like rewarding failure. Last week it was the 2nd case. This week very much the 1st.
I much prefer the 1st option.

Team:   A
After half time we probably didn’t put in the perfect effort, but to rate this an A is the only way I can think of to reward the players as they deserve.
May I have this issue many times this season!

Votes:
[2.5]   Liam Jones
[2]   Sam Walsh
[2]   Harry McKay
[2]   Patrick Cripps
[2]   Lachlan Fogarty
[1]   Sam Docherty
[1]   Michael Gibbons
[1]   Jack Silvagni
[0.5]   Lachie Plowman
[0.5]   Jack Newnes
[0.5]   Ed Curnow

Explanations:
[2.5]   Liam Jones:   A 4 quarter demolition job on the resting Freo ruckman, Jones was at his best, taking marks, hitting targets, making interceptions. A brilliant game.
[2]   Sam Walsh:   37 possessions say it all. Walsh has the work rate.
[2]   Harry McKay:   Should have been 10+ goals, but 7 will suffice. And he didn’t play or mark at his best.
[2]   Patrick Cripps:   Cripps felt he had to stand up, and he did. He was a great leader, but for 3 or 4 funny decisions to pass the ball.
[2]   Lachlan Fogarty:   Barely made a mistake and had 25 possessions and 7 tackles. Excellent.
[1]   Sam Docherty:   Docherty was back to something close to his best, reading the game well and getting leather poisoning.
[1]   Michael Gibbons:   When it was there to be won, Gibbo was brilliant. Not as much of the ball in the second half, but an excellent game all the same.
[1]   Jack Silvagni:   Jack still has a lot of improvement in him, but he was very good today. We have missed him.
[0.5]   Lachie Plowman:   Took on the job of controlling Walters and destroyed him.
[0.5]   Jack Newnes:   Very solid on the wing and deserves a mention.
[0.5]   Ed Curnow:   Did a job on the Freo mids and got plenty of the ball.

Honourable Mentions:
Matthew Cottrell:   First game for the season and it was a good one. His run and decision making were excellent.
Luke Parks:   A very solid debut at half back. Looked like he belonged.
Eddie Betts:   Not a lot, possession wise, but Eddie was the General in the forward line. His defensive pressure was excellent.
Adam Saad:   Not huge numbers, but Saad did what he had to do, and his kicking was to advantage.

Team B

5 Walsh ( Superstar )
4 Cripps ( 3 of his best qtrs for 18 months )
3 Jones ( Back to his best marking the footy )
2 McKay ( Good but wasteful )
1 Fogarty ( Cats would be spewing )

SoJ very unlucky not to get a vote, Betts made McKay's job 200% easier.

I thought Silvagni's influence went well beyond his stats ( and he should have kicked three....).  Importantly, he is a solid lead-up when at half-forward, and he really competes - so even if he doesn't get it, he works hard to break even and shut it down or force a turnover.  He also works hard to clear space, which is one reason why Harry had such an open paddock to lead into.  Our forward line looks more dangerous when he is there.  I just wish his old man would show a glimmer of appreciation in the stands.....

Any other voters?
I won't close down this thread until at least Friday night, but I would appreciate it if people voted promptly.

Our forward line is hugely inexperienced. That is undeniable.

Eddie is a massive asset in that regard. He's seen it all and knows what forwards must do....

Harry should have kicked 10 and largely because the forward line was relatively uncluttered.

Obviously first use of the pills helps, but I reckon Eddie was telling the other forwards to give H space.

Even Levi for the most part didn't get in the way.
