Title: Pre Game Promise AFL Rd 23: Carlton vs GWS
Post by: crashlander on August 14, 2021, 03:27:19 pm
GWS are playing well. We have half a side available. No guesses as to how this will turn out.

I tried before the Port game.

This one can't be any worse.

This is winnable - it all comes down to the coach.  If theirs breaks down on the way to the ground we might be a chance given enough head start.

ianh....based on the form line of the last two weeks, not remotely winnable. GWS playing great footy with big name players out, toppling Geelong (at home) and Richmond. Look at our last two performances and I'd say the white flag has gone up on the season. It'll be Eddie's last game but that made no difference yesterday for Murphy's 300th and last. GWS might need to win to make the 8 so they'll be desperate......we won't.

We are a rabble, virtually coachless and the players likely ignoring everything TT says. Another flogging highly likely.

I'm usually optimistic but this is only going one way. How happy are GWS knowing they get to play us to hold their finals spot.

We did nothing for Murphy's final game, so guessing they'll do nothing for Eddie's either.

It's imperative to lose this game, it means nothing to us other than gaining an earlier draft pick if we drop down the ladder.

If we stupidly win we hand CheatsFC a chance at making the eight!

I dont think we could win if we wanted to, and that sort of thinking is what got us into this mess to begin with.

We must play to win every time we take the field.

Before that, we first need Wet Toast to win today, and they have got off to a shaky start!

GWS will be very motivated to win, I think a good performance effort wise for 4 quarters for us would be a win and we
can get some more games into our kids which is a bonus.

Looks like it will be Levi's last game as well as Eddie's. I really hope we do a better job for them than we did last week for Marc Murphy. He really deserved better than that.

Our Contracted / Un contracted thread shows him as "2021+?", so I'm not sure how long his contract is.

Yeah, I just went searching...
It would be unusual for him to only have 1 year and the cfc article said that he was contracted @geelong...

I found a mmm article dated 01/06/2018 saying that he signed a 2 year extension to take him through to the end of 2021.
Maybe we just took him and his contract off geelongs hands ?

Easy to explain, he came from Geelong and started like a house on fire. Then he became Carltonised and the rest is history.

BEST
Port Adelaide: Boak, Aliir, Amon, Wines, Bergman, Byrne-Jones, Rozee
Carlton: Walsh, Kennedy, Murphy, Dow

Ab
ps: Paddy Dow - 18 possessions 3 marks 2 tackles (doesn't sound too bad)

I am responsible for updated that thread.

When i write '+?' next to someone it is when  someone comes across from another club but the club doesn't say how long it is for.
So for Fogarty, at a minimum he was contracted for 2021 (obviously, he just came across!) but he could potentially be under contract for longer depending on what his actual contract was.

In short, we don't know.
I've never seen anything to suggest otherwise with him.

I saw Dow being dropped and i was immediately reminded of the 'we have offers unders' for Dow rumours.

Putting 2 and 2 together.....Dow has had enough, wants out, has a suitor and is on the way out the door. Thus, no need for us to play him.

Nothing else makes sense to me.

Hope we dont want to get a pick in to help pay for Cerra...

Send Paddy Dow to Tigerland to play with his brother.
Take their first pick back.
Use our first 2 picks at the draft (2x top 10's) and take the best players available, specifically the best young pure KPD. Not some hybrid, or some forward who could play there. I was a set and forget Weitering type.

If we must get Cerra, swap for SPS and be done with it.

Dow for Cerra? No way.

Media rate Cerra as two first rounders...I believe Richmond have two first rounders so they could afford to use one for Dow.
Agree on set and forget KP players, no more he might turn into X Y or Z we want the real deal up front.
IMHO I think it would be SPS and a first rounder for Cerra as the Freo asking price..I also think Fisher will feature in trade talks as well.

Media can rate all they want. No chance.

SPS and at most a 2nd rounder.....no more.
I'd rather keep SPS personally, but accept it may be better for all to get Cerra in and SPS out.

I've gone cold on Cerra ever since our game where he couldn't hit the side of a barn....but we seem keen so i've accepted its possible.

Dow out can only be because he is gone though, so tigers is the most logical choice.

While the review may have identified it, doesn't guarantee the exec will implement necessary changes. I know that sounds cynical. However I have little confidence in the club's processes.

I understand your cynicism but, since the new president is behind the review, there must be a decent chance that its recommendations are taken seriously.

I just hope that they’re taken seriously and we no longer see blokes like Dow dropped when they were among our better players.

Hopefully that's not the case with Dow that he wants out.....but wouldn't blame him. I've been critical of him but in the second half of the season he's been given a consistent run and found steady form....plenty to build on IMO. Unfortunately there's no chance Richmond will be giving up their first rounder for Dow....we can hope but we're dreaming. Unless there's some 3 way deal that involves Cerra, Dow, SPS etc.

If he doesn't want out, then it's hard to fathom that O'Brien would hold his spot and Dow doesn't. O'Brien had that one good game about a month ago and done little else since. If anyone comes to us with an offer for him we should take whatever we can get.

Dow not strong enough to be a top midfielder which limits where you play him. Fogarty can't kick more than 40 metres. Williams can't kick right foot and not strong enough. Lochie Obrien weak as water. Ploughman is a professional panicker when under pressure and can't read a game. Newnes, got the build to be anything and is really a nothing. Newman no right foot and weak physically, and the list goes on. Whether we see Sam Docherty pull on a Carlton guernsey again, remains to be seen. I know we all wish him the very best with this latest terrible battle.

We have got so many passengers, it's beyond a joke. IF my mail is correct, and Lyon has got the job,  I reckon he knows the weaknesses of the joint, as well as the strengths, and with a change of at least 6 personnel, maybe more, he knows that we have the players in Walsh, Weitering, Mackay,  a fully fit Cripps and a couple of others that he can build a team around to take us at least to the 8.

The only thing that might save us from 12 goal defeat is Giants don't really have much to play for.   Our motivation may be higher  but we don't have the talent on the park.

Good luck & thanks to Eddie & Levi.

There is groundswell that Teague is done - based on fact or fiction, I don't know. .  Thankfully we will know soon.   How they announce the decision will affect my membership and whether I just follow Waverley Blues next season.
