Title: Green Shoot of the Week
Post by: townsendcalling on April 29, 2017, 09:56:54 pm
Considered starting this last week, trying to extract a positive from a negative and using our coach's vernacular...Green Shoots.

Choose ONE ONLY Green Shoot you observed from the game.  Can be a player, passage of play and individual effort, any ONE Shoot that put a smile ???? on your face.

I'll start off with 'The fearless willingness of Zac Fisher.' No a great game, but you can put on weight, bulk up, gain strength etc, but you can't teach courage. He's got determination and courage.

Worthy of a Green Shoot acknowledgement.

Great thread.

I thought samo was very good again today, tried some Hollywood footy but so clean and great skills. Those little shimmies out of the packs are sublime

Levi's second quarter.

His marking and goal kicking turned the game but not quite as much as his willingness to cause carnage.  The Swans defenders were looking over their shoulders and that really had a big influence on the result.  If Levi continues to attack the ball/man with the same intent, our forward line will be so much more competitive.

Tough to pick just one this week. But I'll go with Tom Williamson's composure, work rate and kicking. There's a lot to like about that lad.

Tom Williamson for me too, cool and composed, works hard both ways and rarely misses a target by foot

Good call barbs, sps was good. Willo was better! So aware of his man and when to peel off, very impressive

Williamson has improved each week. If he keeps it up he'll be judd mk2 by the end of the year.

Williamson is a bull. Magnificent kick who will become a big name. A massive upgrade on Tuohy.

Alex Silvagni.

Perhaps not as young or green, but I was expecting absolutely nothing from this pick-up and am pleased to have been proven wrong.

Have not seen the game yet but interested to hear BB stressing the importance of the Gibbs/Murphy contributions especially their leadership! Good to hear, let's hope they can keep it going.

What would Bolton know Cookie?  They are just parasites sucking the life out of the club  ::)

I guess supporters will always form opinions based on observations from afar and without the benefit of inside knowledge ... I do it all the time  :)

Yes mate, I guess we are all prisoners of our own perceptions.

Jump onto the AFL website Cookie and listen to Bolts's presser at around the 1:39 mark. When asked about the boys coming out hard in the 3rd qrt, he said he didnt need to make a point about it to the players, he said Bryce Gibbs did, Murph did, Doc did, Crippa did, Ed did. All the leaders took charge and he didnt have to say a thing.

Yes, thx GTC. IMO these may just be the most important green shoots of all atm.

I reckon he's looking more and more like a cross between Swan McKay and Kevin Hall.

Cripps pack clunk mark in the last, slots the goal then does a double fist celebration and I know we are home.

I had movement downstairs.

Wiliamson darting in and out of traffic in the backline and finding a target..... again.

Yesterday, and I havnt seen the stats, he would have had 100% efficiency AGAIN. Amszing.

Agree....been a long time since we have had a player with poise and composure like he has coupled with great kicking skills...his acceleration in traffic and evasive skills
are Pendlebury like. Probably the best of our draft from last season IMO and that includes SPS who has been ok too....one thing Williamson has in his favour is his size, good height and strong enough to hold his ground. When he has the footy you feel comfortable its going to another Carlton player....Hayward kicked two on him and let him know about the last goal but our man was straight back at him and I like that he has some attitude too...

Agree.

I've not seen the last 2 games, but agree with the people talking about Willo, what I saw of him against the Bombers said that he will be something pretty special.

Spoilt for choice this week, but I can cope ::)

Samo's lightening fast decision-making and handball to Weiters. Weiters boots it home. Our future ;D

Indeed there were some very nice signs.
[1] SPS: he managed 20 possessions for the 1st time. He really showed some dash and class with his quick decision making and accurate disposal. The way he moved through traffic was lovely to watch.
[2] Tom Wiliamson: his attack on the ball was excellent and his long kicking and dash embarrassed the Swans more than once.
[3] Zac Fisher: he wasn't as good as earlier, but he really did some nice things that lead to goals. Pity he did his hamstring.
[4] Billie Smedts: really played a decent game and took a couple of marks forward. Pity his first shot for goal was such a dud. But the 2nd was much better.

Watched Weiters closely on Saturday. His angle chipped pass to Wright that ended in a goal to Charlie that iced the game is a snapshot why he will be a very special player.

The kid was hurting, was tired and being late in the game with a handy lead most his age would have tried to snap it for a miracle goal. Well not him.

And his field kicking is as good as our best ball movers.

So lucky we have him.  Love his celebrations after we kick a goal too.  :)

x2 I noticed that too - he looked around to see if there was anyone in a better position and then kicked it straight to him.  I thought he'd go for the goal because most other players would just bang it too, but nope, he looked and found the better option

Sammo's quick hands/thinking.
ASOS.
Willo - poise and disposal by foot - deadly, precise and always best option.
ZF - speed, relentless endeavour.

Add to that the Inside 50 to Casboult 20m out directly in front and you can see his brain ticks over at another level compared to most.

Marchbank has almost flown under the radar as a 'green shoot' - he has played the grand total of 13 games but when you watch him play, you'd swear it was 113.  Between he and Weiters, we have CHB/CHF covered for a long time.  And to think how long we have waited for some quality KPPs........

14 minutes to go in the last, Williamson attacks the contest when others were standing around looking, intercepts a swans handball gives to Samo who gives a beautiful delayed handball to Fisher who kicks a lovely left footer into the forward fifty. That was my favorite green shoot moment of the game.

Gibbs couldn't take the mark up forward of course!

Not the traditional green shoot as in young player, more a green shoot in TEAM.

Really enjoying the brand of footy being played ATM, seems every player is on the same page and playing for each other.

The green shoot for me was watching the reaction of the players after Alex Silvagni's chase down. To a man they got around him.
But best of all was Billie Smedts. Billie was involved in the play immediately after the rundown that sent ball into our fwd line for a goal.
After the goal, down the ground footage showed Smedts run from the fwd line to the back to get around Alex.

That for me shows me we are well and truly on the right track. Young, old and all buying into the TEAM.
