Robert Heatley Stand / Re: AFL Rd 7 2024 Post Game Prognostications Carlton vs Geelong
We need to start striking blokes softly off the ball. The fines are worth it if you can get a few goals out of it.
Knowing our luck there would be a crackdown and one of our blokes would be made an example of and get a long holiday...interesting the Henry hit has been deemed low impact , intentional and body contact yet Zac was holding his head?

If he staged then he should be suspended. I would like the AFL to come out and say it was a free kick or he staged.
Watched it a few times on video and there appears to be high contact of sorts but ZW also appears to have exaggerated the force of the contact and the umpires ignored it due to the extra mayo he applied.
It probably should have been a free but you cant expect to get those all the time either and he should have played through the contact and not let Geelong(Henry) have a zero contest situation.
The umpires were terrible overall imo and let play go especially holding the ball/man situations and you just have to be able to read the game and how its being umpired and know that it was unlikely they would make that call as high contact imho and not gamble they might.
Saying all that I have just read Henry has been charged with striking Zac Williams which I presume was the same incident so the MRO has deemed the contact severe enough and should have been a free kick to our man ....more to play out in this saga and you were justified in calling for the AFL to adjudicate on the decision.

Williams is not a defender per se', we all know that and Chris Scott exploited it to perfection. Unfortunately, his team mates (in defence) let him down by lack of support. Zac is a creative run and carry HB with good disposal skills, yesterday he was taken to places he just didn't want to go to. He and his team mates will review it and learn. The key to a premiership is a solid, consistant back 6 or 7, whilst we are treading water at the minute, we aren't are premiership threat right now due to the disruption of the defensive unit. Once we get them back and they can regain their cohesion and consistency, then will we see if we are contenders or not.
You cant be on 800k a year and turn the ball over like he did vs good teams like Geelong. As was pointed out by "Pinot"his efforts or lack of led to 3-4 goals being scored by Geelong and the attacking value he gives isnt worth his lack of defensive prowess. His disposal is way overrated imho and I wouldnt have him in my best 22 and he is very fortunate we are down on troops with injury and he doesnt have much competition for his spot.
Stengle at 175cm/73kg outbodied Zac 183cm/84kg in the goal square for an easy mark and goal which was just garbage defense from our man imo...its very hard to hold your place in the backline as an attacking only player and your skillset and decision making has to be at the Nick Daicos level to get away with it and Zac is nowhere near that high bar.

Williams isn't in my best best 22 - doesn't defend anywhere near hard enough.  Great when he has the ball running down field, it's the other stuff.
Agree he was disappointing yesterday the media have accused him of staging for a  free where he appeared to be caught high and then that passage of play produced a important goal for Geelong.

Yeah EB I just noticed that too.

Maybe Binns comes in for Fantasia and starts as the sub.....Carroll into the 22? Or maybe Cincotta in for Fantasia and starts as the sub....in case we need some more in the backline.

Voss seemed adamant that Weitering and Williams were right to go.

Maybe S Durdin as sub just in case JW starts feeling that corkie?.....Cincotta seems a perfect replacement for Williams....

Horror game but given our injuries and with such a depleted team not unexpected. The Cats had AFL premiership players in the team along with plenty who have played a few senior games and it went to script.
Mirkov and Okeefe didnt do a lot and most of what Dom Akui did resulted in turnovers and there wasnt much to enthuse about...Maher battled on, Wilson started well but I thought our two best players were McMahon and Nelson.
Id be persisting with the ex Pie McMahon down back, he has some ability all be it he can look laconic but his skills are good.

We need to keep a close eye on Myers.  I'd run Cottrell on him and make him accountable.  Maybe put Acres on Cameron and make Cameron gut run up and down all day.
No Saad is going to make it difficult with Stengle too, maybe Boyd gets the job although I'd like Boyd for Myers.
Where ever you look they have dangerous forwards , a couple that go under the radar are Close and Henry.

We did OK with Weitering missing at the start of the season.

As good as Hawkins is, he does rely on players up the ground and, if we can get on top, he can be starved of opportunities.

Cameron is a different kettle of fish with his ability to win the ball and create opportunities up the ground.  While it's not an ideal match up, Young is probably best able to go with him.  Alternatively, Kemp runs with Cameron when he plays up the ground and Weitering or Young pick him up inside 50.

Vossy seems very confident that both Williams and Weitering will play.
Agree...think the only way to negate the Cats forwards is not to let the ball get down there end too often, its a very talented forward line with good variety and no obvious matchup for Cameron imho.
Young on Hawkins would worry me more than Kemp on Cameron.....this is a game where McGovern providing that second man up or having the ability to run with Cameron will be missed....never thought I would say we would miss McGovern but its credit too him he has become a key cog in how our defense works.

I probably want to see a bit more of TDK forward before I'm sold on him as a forward and how many times it works and we win games. I like it as an option though  that the coach can go to depending on the opposition and state of the game to stretch other teams and get an edge .

When we play 2 rucks, Pitto needs to spend most of his time on the ball (especially early in the game) to allow TDK to provide relief when the opposition ruckman tires (especially late in games), which allows for Pitto to be subbed out if there are no injuries.

This means that one of the 3 tall forwards needs to consistently present on the wing (or in the midfield) to provide marking power; create space in the front half; and to run forward without being closely marked.  They all have sufficient mobility to perform this role.
Full agree...the two specialist rucks playing works best with Pitto doing the grunt work early especially vs the opposition meathead type rucks like Briggs and then when they tire TDK can jump all over them later in the game. Harry and Charlie often appear on the wings or even half back to take a mark and drag their opponent up the ground which then leaves the other one alone with his opponent and our two dont lose too many of those contests if we can get the ball down to them quickly.

Robert Heatley Stand / Re: VFL 2024 Rd 4 Carlton vs Port Melbourne at Carlton
Was a Dandenong support even though I lived in the Northern Suburbs near the Preston ground. They were the good old days, VFL on a Saturday and the VFA on Sundays.
Yep, great old days tuned to Channel 10, just remember Port Melbourne winning everything and the late Fred Cook kicking bags of goals. Was a great era for Full forwards who regularly kicked 100 plus goals....
