Robert Heatley Stand / Re: AFL Rd 9 2024 Pre Game Prognostications Carlton vs Melbourne
WIth no Doc/JSOS available, this is almost our best 23 with probably Motlop and Fogarty as the only ones to come in....and maybe Williams if in form. If Marchbank could stay on the park I could see him being the second key defender.

On paper, both teams look very evenly matched. We've probably got the two better key forwards, but they've got arguably the best key defender combo in the game. Midfields are probably pretty even although Gawn probably gives them a slight edge...but we have two ruckmen compared to Gawn and Van Rooyen as backup.

For me, Kemp comes in and gets first shot at Fritsch. He's got pace to go with him and match him in the air.

If McGovern and Martin pass fitness tests, play them. We might need one of the ruckmen pushing back when Gawn goes forward so Martin offers some marking ability forward. Martin isn't and has never been a high possession player......but surely offers more than Fantasia at the moment. But one more soft tissue injury this season for him and that's just about it.

IN:  McGovern, Martin, Kemp
OUT:  Young, Williams, Fantasia

I think Cincotta stays in.

Young just looks completely lost out there at the moment and is a panic merchant when he gets the ball. Williams was good early in the season with his kicking and run, but last week I lost count of how many panic dump kicks he did out of defence.

And one of Carroll or Binns as the sub.

Wonder if it'll be Cottrell that goes to Daicos? Sidebottom has been terribly outta form this year so hopefully this isn't the week he discovers it again.

On paper we look to have the edge even without Saad, McGovern, Martin, Motlop.....but history shows ladder positions don't usually mean much. If we can bring the pressure that we showed for the majority of that GWS game (apart from 20 minutes of the second quarter), we can win.

They have some firepower up forward with small/medium forwards when they move the ball quickly.....Hill, Schultz, Elliot, McCreary and Hoskin-Elliot etc. We should win it in the middle but need to rely more than just bombing it into Harry and Charlie and hoping they can mark it.

De Goey and Mitchell both ruled out by McRae.

Gives us a bit of an edge in the midfield for sure. Great if we get Cerra back but I'd like to have McGovern down back this week too just to settle things down a bit.

If Cerra comes in, probably won't be too many other changes.

Agree with you DJC.....Kemp runs with Cameron if he's up around the wings etc and then hopefully Young can just spoil like he does when it goes deeper.

Fingers crossed on Weitering though.....I think Durdin will be exposed for lack of games at this level.

Geelong backline looks a bit bare too though without Stewart and our height could be a worry. If we get it on our terms like we did last week just before half time I think we can win it.

Binns is the surprise one for me having not got a game yet but coaches must know who's ready and who's not. Last year, Round 1, we threw both Holland and Cowan straight into it. Holland from memory has played nearly every game since. Cowan fell outta favour after half a dozen games or so but comes back in last week and looked like he's hardly missed a beat and was right up for the contest. I can see him as the long term replacement for someone like Newman....can play a shut-down role but still get a bit of the ball himself and with a bit of mongrel too.

Owies for mine is a bit maligned....went at 1.5 goals/game last year in his 18 games and not far off that average again this season. There's not many small forwards who get 20 odd possessions per week but it's hitting the scoreboard and the pressure applied when the ball hits the ground in the forward line....I think both Owies and Durdin are pretty good on that front.

Pinot....not sure they'll risk Cerra....only been a week and a bit since the hamstring strain even though it was a mild one. Love him back but the midfield can do this one without him IMO. Cincotta is the likely one in for Williams if he doesn't come up.

Didn't watch the VFL game but Moir amongst the goals. Having TDK forward probably makes it a bit harder for Moir given he's more of a mid-size/3rd tall.
