Robert Heatley Stand / Re: AFL Rd 1 2024 Post Game Prognostications Carlton vs Richmond
Just an explanation. Stephen Kernahan was a player you could rely on as a key forward and leader. Levi Casboult would take strong marks and you would hold your breath while he shot for goal. He was a good player.  Sticks was a great player. When McKay started I thought he could be like Kernahan but over the past few seasons he has kicked like Casboult. This season he has played like the leader and quality player I thought he would be. It is really not that difficult to understand.

I thought Richmond responded pretty strongly after last week's debacle. They didn't give up. Hat tip to them. Do our players know that they are allowed to win by more than a goal?
I thought our tackling was pretty good, our goal kicking was average, our defence was very strong but there is still some disconnect in our forward line.
When McKay was recruited I thought he would be our next Kernahan. Over the past few seasons he had become our next Casboult. He looks like he is going to have a pretty big year. I have been pretty happy with Cuningham and Fogarty so far.
Nothing much more I can say.  Keep winning.

Robert Heatley Stand / Re: AFL Rd 0 2024 Post Game Prognostications Carlton vs Brisbane
Didn't think we were going to win going into the game and was certain we were going to lose 15 minutes into the second quarter. I had started watching Midsummer Murders rather than Gabbasummer Murders. I am almost convinced the team and the Club may have turned the corner.
Winners win because they win. It is a cultural thing. To some extent it doesn't matter who is out there but whether they are going to have a go and not give up. After the Elliot debacle I spoke to David McKay and said what I wanted was a team that had a go. It didn't mean that much in the short term whether they won or lost as long as they had a go. Since the 20 odd year since the changeover I am not sure this has been the case. I didn't think the players were having a go before the demise of Elliot as well.
Well done Young and Kemp on holding those two key position posts allowing McGovern to be creative off half back. Well done Saad for playing a close checking game on Cameron which isn't his natural game. Well done to Jack Carroll his game was a revelation.
What I had wanted was for us to really turn up and make a contest of the game. Playing Brisbane at the Gabba and without seven players who could be in our best 23 I thought we would be up against it and after watching the practice match against Melbourne and our past record of being satisfied with mediocrity, I really had my doubts. Obviously after watching Melbourne Thursday night it is clear practice match form is not a good guide. That first quarter and a bit where we couldn't lay a tackle was a worry but once the initial pace went off and the humidity started making the conditions more slippery which suits our style of game, the players really turned it around.
I said before the game that Brisbane defence can be scored against which turned out to be so in the third quarter, but I also think they are more of a team of individuals than the other top sides and I also think that the enjoy handing out the little whacks and back handers in match but tend to take umbrage when other sides respond and they seem to lose concentration and go off script. They have been in the finals the past five years without making an impact so clearly something is wrong.
Watching Carlton in the 60's under Barassi and in the 70's under Jezza was great because they would always fight. The 1970 Grand Final and those third quarter blitzes don't just come about. They are built on the foundations of earlier seasons. We may have the opportunity to do something special.
Finally a big shout out to the hoards of Blues Brothers in the stands. They give our Club a point of difference.

Robert Heatley Stand / Re: AFL Rd 0R 2024 Pre Game Prognostications Brisbane v Carlton
Haven't beaten Brisbane for an awful long time.  I think the last time we won was Teague's first game as coach. Our midfield needs to fire and if you shut down Neale they tend to struggle. Their forwards are dangerous and we are missing our best defender and defensive leader. I believe their defence is good except when it isn't. When things go wrong they can be scored against both heavily and quickly. It will be interesting what our side looks like considering the injuries we have to key personnel but I think it will be our attitude which determines how we go.
The question we must answer is are we satisfied with last season or do we want to go all the way?

Robert Heatley Stand / Re: 2024 Practice Match Carlton vs Melbourne
It was only a practice match but it was concerning. If we don't play with intensity we will be back where we were before the second half of the season. I think we have the potential to go all the way but we have to turn up to play. We will know more next week.

Robert Heatley Stand / Re: The backline 2024
Without Weitering I think it will be Williams,  Marchbank,  Kemp, Saad,  McGovern, Newman and Boyd. Cincotta will be unlucky while Young, Durdin and Cowan are back up. While Wilson, Akui and Monaghan will still be developing. Looking at the names we are probably one short on the list so there is an opportunity for someone to step up.

Robert Heatley Stand / Re: The forward line 2024 - who plays and how is it structured?
With Harry and Charlie our key forwards, Cottrell and Martin our medium forwards and Motlop and Owies our small forwards, l think the seventh position will be between,  Fogarty, E. Hollands, Cuningham, Fantasia, Durdin and Binns. Jack Carroll is going to find a position. Moir and Lemmey will be development projects. Players like TDK, Kennedy and O. Hollands will spend time going through the forward line as well.

Robert Heatley Stand / Re: Carlton 2024 Predictions / Expectations
I would think Boyd will play as well as Pittonett and while Weitering, Silvagni and Hollands the older won't be available to play, this means someone additionally will miss selection but I am unsure as to who that will be. I also think Cuningham and Cincotta will also be unlucky to miss out.

Robert Heatley Stand / Re: Fixture 2024
The AFL is all about marketing and not about the fans, it is not about the football and certainly not about the players. The Club's attitude of just turning up and playing whoever and  wherever is the right one because there is no point complaining. The AFL doesn't care.
