The Sports Desk / Re: Phil Hughes
The reports are the lad has passed away, the posts from both of you are not suitable for the thread!

Rest in Peace Phil Hughes, too young!

Just read on the HS what Alan Jones said on radio this morning (where he was reduced to tears) about the young fellas condition. The situation appears grave, he is breathing by the aid of machines and the injury is much worse that first thought. I pray to god he recovers but judging by the faces of the all the cricketers going to visit him, my gut feeling is that it almost looks as if they are all going in to say their goodbyes. Again its my gut feeling and I hope to god I am grossly wrong.

I hope you are wrong as well, but I understand your perception of the situation.

Through my cricket connections (albeit second-hand), I've just been told that the situation with Hughes and his overall health may not be positive with strong fears he may not come out of the coma.

Gotta hope that this information is wrong though.

Alan Jones broadcasting the graveness of the situation. Forgive me for this but I hope Jones did so with the wishes of the Hughes family and isn't just trying to grab some ratings. But when Jones and his like are involved I remain ever so cynical of motives for such announcements!

We all wish the young man the very best!

Sometimes not even cheaper is guaranteed in the long run

Don't we know it, NSW should be well versed in this.

I have a friend who tells me about a trick of accounting used by governments. They claim to be better fiscal managers, the A Grade standard at getting the budget in control. But reality they are just tricky accountants manipulating figures to make things look better.

One way they do this is move money around, I won't go into details because I think we have posted about it here before. For example to be seen as slashing costs, increasing health spending and getting tough on crime they move funds and mental health cases from the courts to the health department. It's not even a reallocation, just a change to the heading on a page somewhere that says cases dealt with by the courts can be moved into mental health. Then the politicians claim that crime is down despite slashing the budget, and health spending is up!

It looks like the Ambulance Service initially claimed that the ambulance arrived just 7 minutes after the call was received and by implication it took 14 minutes or so for the call to be made.  It has now conceded that there had been an earlier call made 6 minutes after Hughes was hit and the ambulance dispatched from 800m away from the SCG took 23 minutes to arrive and it actually arrived after the 2nd ambulance arrived.  Make no mistake - this is newsworthy and there will be much discussion in NSW regarding the efficiency of the ambulance service.

You have to wonder, though, why it took 6 minutes for the 1st call to be made given that blood was coming from Hughes' ear.  Maybe the bystander effect I noted above is the explanation.  Surprising that an ambulance isn't onsite at the SCG during matches in which fast bowlers are exceeding 150 kph with a hard ball.

Yes, it seems the stories are changing by the minute!

As for the ambulances arriving out of sequence, I believe this is normal as units already on the road respond to urgent codes if they are available to do so.

I suspect we are going to find the first unit was delayed primarily at the SCG end not at the depo, or that the 1st despatched ambulance was delayed because a closer unit had been diverted.

This goes to the funding of ambulance services everywhere, a high profile victim of politicising health! The politicians will deflect if the media take this issue to them, they will say now is not the time to discuss it, but in fact now is the perfect time!

Gaining cheaper health services through outsourcing does not necessarily make for better services or even more services, the only thing it guarantees is cheaper!

But you want to blame the rich for this, those who can pay but refuse to subscribe. Tight-ar5e millionaire and billionaire bastards and the wealthy middle class who expect priority service but have no private health cover or ambulance subscription. Politics and big business is full of them, they claim they are happy to self-insure because they can afford the risk, but by not subscribing to the services they actually diminish the availability! Our country is full of them and they bitch like crazy when one of their own suffers a delay!

Disgraceful to read The Hun and other News Ltd rags raising questions over the delay in SCG staff calling 000.

Reports are that two doctors were there at the ground, one experienced in trauma type injuries and severe sports injuries having traveled with the Australian Rugby teams.

The best News Ltd can do is write a headline about the delay of a phone call causing grief and pain for Hughes friends and relatives!

Judd is an easy target for people to pick on if they want to talk about hitting targets.

Often splitting through a clearance, with hands on him putting him off balance, or even harder, going flat stick on the afterburners.

I think that using the footy well has more to do with not being wasteful with the footy resulting into turn of posession or bad targets to hit.

People are too forgiving of Judd's kicking, it's not unreasonable but it's still not exemplary either. In this regard Ablett, Mitchell and many others have him well and truly shaded.

As for kicking in traffic under pressure, I'm sure Mitchell wouldn't use being poked and prodded as an excuse, he'd just hit the target, the right target! ;)

Helmet manufacturer has their say:

https://au.sports.yahoo.com/cricket/news/article/-/25613525/hughes-not-wearing-latest-model-helmet-manufacturer/

Think I would be going the extra protection and sacrificing some movement.........maybe there needs to more of a range and choice of helmets reflecting protection vs movement..

At junior cricket we taught kids to use the helmet as defense, they were coached never to turn their head away as it exposes areas most vulnerable. It's the part of the keep your eyes on the ball message that is often forgotten.

A good drill is to get kids with their helmets on, correctly adjusted for fit and spacing on the grill / visor. The grills are often too close to the face, and helmets are often too loose. Then from a meter of so away underarm cricket balls at their face and have them use the grill and top of the helmet to head the balls away or back to the thrower. They start off flinching and closing their eyes, but after a few repetitions of several minutes each the flinching reaction disappears and they start ducking into the ball using the helmet as defense. Further more, once the panic reflex reaction is diminished in games you start to see them swaying out of the way watching the ball go right past the visor.

My brother use to take this a step further with the older kids and prove to them that a ball hitting the side of the helmet hurts way more than a ball hitting the top or grill. But younger kids might not react well to that.

Very bad news, ambulance turned up but they called in the helicopter instead, not good at all!

FFS, I hope that the lad is OK!

I never ever wish anyone to be genuinely hurt, playing sport or just going about your business, it's no good.

Blah-Blah Bar / Re: Carbon Emissions
There's no logic in dismissing taxes because they are merely passed on to the consumer.  That's what makes them effective.  Using subsidies and taxes to ensure that good and bad externalities are internalised in the price is essential to ensuring that the market price produces the best outcome.

Now, we have the ludicrous situation in which coal miners and coal-fired electricity producers whinge about renewable energy suppliers receiving subsidies while having to pay no tax to reflect the negative externalities they produce.  And they are winning the political battle in Australia, persuading Abbott to reduce subsidies and targets.

Next thing will be an attempt to entrench the coal industry's position by locking us into long-term contracts and subsidies to ensure that coal-fired power remains cheaper than renewable power whose generation continues to fall as The Age reported today.

While I agree with your general sentiment, the short term outlook of our mining and energy sector leaves me cold. They have no interest in building efficiencies because they have no interest in upgrading or re-investing. They have a slash and burn mentality which I would claim is typical of psychopaths, gouging the end users for a short term win(fiscal and political), with zero consideration of long term consequence. It's like Exxon blaming the users of cars for the Exxon Valdez disaster!

Robert Heatley Stand / Re: Kreuzer VS Warnock VS Wood - How Will This One Play Out ??
Does my head in how many times we kick the ball to land on the head of our forward instead of kicking it to advantage.
No forward can mark a ball when he just has to stand there and fight with the backs...usually 2 or 3 of them.

We need to kick so our forwards can run onto it to create a better chance. Just my opinion. :)

Exactly BP, I agree 100%!

The best ball users in the game put the ball in areas that draw the forward to it, they don't kick to, behind, on top of, besides or short of the forward.

Thry and Blue_MM, I think you are both confusing finishing with hitting targets.

It's easy for fans to forgive and forget the foibles of the superstars, but by AFL standards Yarran, Murphy, Gibbs are the best on our list yet just average overall.

Unfortunately for us, Judd who is an absolute star in most other areas except perhaps marking is/was also very ordinary by foot hitting targets.

Blah-Blah Bar / Re: Carbon Emissions
All this for or against anthropic climate change debate is bogus because nobody can tell the future, the only people arguing against action are those with a financial stake in the debate.

You can also add those that would have benefited from selling and trading carbon credits. They also have a financial stake.

My 0.02c worth is whether you believe or don't believe in climate change in a country such as ours it's makes sense to use renewable energies like solar and in a country that is drought ridden we must preserve the precious water that we have. Looking after the environment is something we should all do for no other reason than it's the right thing to do and not doing it simply leaves a mess for future generations to clean up and that's not right. We should look after our natural environment and celebrate it as a gift that provides us with foods from land and sea, we should allow mining but it must be responsible and the excesses of the past must stop and anything that reduces pollution and ensures we have clean air to breathe should be pursued if for no other reason than it's nicer to live in a place like that  - have a look at China if you want a comparison of what a polluted world can look like.

I don't believe applying taxes that simply get on-handed to consumers is the answer nor do I believe trading credits in virtual hot air will have any real benefit. I am not sure of the answer in it's entirety but I do take heart from the fact that car manufacturers are now concerned about a drop off in sales for future generations who are now questioning whether they need one. If that's the case then perhaps the answer is in education where the kids of tomorrow shame the adults of today and we collectively feel we have to do something and thus change occurs. Could a Government and business less social revolution actually be the answer and essentially they decide what gets delivered?

Fascinating next decade in front of us.

I agree whole-heartedly with your general comments.

In regards to the kids of tomorrow many have already got it covered, they have no doubt about who to blame for the lack of affordable housing, damage to the environment and failing economies. The problem is the people to blame are the people currently in power, and leaving it to the educated kids of tomorrow to sort out is in my opinion a recipe for anarchy.

The bastards that have put us in this mess do not give a stuff! Have a look at the current Victorian Election, the primary debate is about building more roads, new hospitals, schools, major projects, these people are dinosaurs and Luddites offering 19th century solutions! They sell off the countries future for the short term hit from the political sugar. There's a raft of reports circulating that suggest it's the small improvements that deliver the greatest returns, yet both parties want the big stuff, the blue sky billion dollar front page of the newspaper hits. They don't really want to make things better, what they really want are the billion dollars cheques to deliver them some sort of weird political legacy!

Wealthy Chinese view countries like Australia as a long term destination, a place to go once they a have rooted their own country! Lets hope they don't repeat the exercise when they take political control here, they are already quickly owning the joint, and Abbott's just made it easier to buy and pollute!

That's right LP, it was when Ratten was trying to squeeze several ruckmen into the side.  It worked OK a couple of times but really depended on the opposition.

Our coaches / line coaches have generally been dumbar5es.

The setup with the resting ruck option up forward is OK but only if you can deliver the ball half decently. Since the departure of Houlihan our list sprays the ball like a tomcat pissing on the front door, and back then under those two talls conditions when the ruckmen contested inside F50 Eddie Betts would be flying against them rather than crumbing! We had a forward line that wasn't being out-marked yet we had nobody crumbing! The alternative setup was to have blokes like 1AW, Robbo and Simmo bombing the ball forward off the HBF to a small forward line and watching Betts and Garlett get out-marked body on body time after time!

Back in Fev's day he had Houlihan and Scotland hitting him up on leads, that is if we could manage to feed the ball forward through them, the rest of the time it was a chook raffle.

Now with the departure of Scotland I don't think we have a single A Grade ball user on the list, some very talented goal kickers, but not one bloke who can reliably put the ball to the forwards advantage. I maintain Carlton are the worst ball using side in the AFL, and by some margin! It looks like our recruiters put no emphasis on accurate disposal under pressure as a recruit requirement. It's the arrogance of the coaches that cause this situation, they genuinely believe if they are given a super-athlete they can teach them to do the rest, but it's a bullsh1te belief and the Dawks, Cats and Swans have proven it time and time again by recruiting footballers first and slaughtering the opposition regularly!
