Sophie Li Stats: 27 disposals, 14 handballs From the coach: Sophie had 27 disposals and three marks, proving her ability to find plenty of the football. She was able to set up at clearances and worked hard both ways in the game. Saturday marked Sophie’s last game for the Blues in the VFLW this season, and we can’t wait to see her back in the navy blue come the 2019 AFLW competition.
Is there some kind of (in)eligibility rules in place? You can't play too many games if you are AFLW listed???
Why would you play Kreuzer as a midfielder when you can play a midfielder there. He's a ruckman who's good around the ground, not a running mid. It's the the stupid idea of playing two ruckman. Other than failing us most times, it effects both player's game. A ruck is going to be forward near the entire game when neither are any good at it. Why play a ruck up forward when you are play a forward who hit's the scoreboard. Levi needed to be dropped (for McKay) but he kicked 34 goals last year. Kreuzer and Phillips wouldn't get half of that combined. To win game you need a properly balanced side playing their roles and to their strengths. We play our's to our weaknesses. Two rucks and 4 tall defenders, just Charlie as our key forward. What actually goes on at Match Committee level.
I'm hearing you re match committee, been saying it all year.
Agree about Kreuzer being played as a mid too.
However to suggest that 2 rucks is plain stupid needs to be taken with a grain of salt when the alternative is playing a bloke at FF who can't kick straight. What is more stupid?? Or.. Playing a kid at FF who doesn't know how to get the ball and/or use his size to his advantage. Yes, almost, 2 goals a game is good, but lets not forget how many cheap goals are included in that.
Of course there is always the possibility that he (along with Kerr) are not fully fit. Not to mention that perhaps we are trying to compare apples with apples in the ruck to see what are long term future with Phillips could be.
Phillips is not "physically" aggressive like Martin, not even close! Phillips will wrestle, but in the past he'd take a back step if someone starts jumping into him like Mumford or Martin do! It's fair enough, Phillips has been on the end of a lot of injuries, but he's got time he's still 2 or 3 years away from being at his peak.
This time next season will be a good tell for a fit Phillips.
Taking a backwards step in the ruck is not a sign of weakness its a tactic. Every ruckman who can do it, does so, when the opportunity arises.
Ruckman jump early to essentially 'ground' opposition ruckmen. If they go too early, step back, let them go up...and down, and while they are on the way down reach up and get the tap. Kreuzer does it too.
Phillips isn't as physical as Mumford was, but nobody was. Phillips has actually got a bit of agro about him. Must be the hair. I'm more than happy with what he offers. If he could get some continuity at AFL level, he'd surprise many on here, and in the AFL.
Much rather see Phillips + Kreuzer vs Casboult + Kreuzer or Casboult + Phillips.
Dow having a rest, nothing to prove. Garlett (injured) fair enough. Mullett dropped, he is not the future so good.
As for McKay... Reckon he is showing why he was a 'reach' with our pick. Was always a speculative one. He is very raw and basically needs to learn how to play football. I don't have a problem with his development in the 2's as he'll be more of a target there than he will be in the 1's with Curnowfides. Kerr...he'll get more time. Still only young too.
“He (Harry) obviously had a good stint in the seniors,” Andrew told SEN’s Time On.
“He wasn’t going as well as he would have liked, so we put him back in the VFL and he is still learning the game.
“Remember in his first year he had the stress reaction, ended up with a bit of glandular fever at the same time or shortly after, which meant he was out for most of that year.
“He is over 200cm, he is a young guy and they just take a bit longer to develop these young boys.
“I don’t think so (when asked if work rate is an issue).
“It’s game knowledge and a bit of experience playing with men.
“You can see little glimpses of what Harry can do, we just need to see that for longer.
“He is working on a couple of things. Make no mistake, Harry is going to be a very good player, so looking forward to seeing him develop.”
If Kreuzer isn't fit I'd like to give De Konning a try in this game. He looks like he can play. He looks like he could play both forward and ruck. This is an ideal game to try him and give him a feel of AFL footy.
Roles are probably harder to define when there are so many injuries and players out of necessity are moved around. Much easier where there a a core of experienced and good players and the youngsters/fringe players just have to fit in and not be the major playmakers.
As far as i can tell, there are quite a few clearly defined roles at the club.
Casboult. Kick as many points as possible, sometimes he misses and gets 6. Oshea and Mullet, run around pretending to be footballers going at 80%. Cause multiple turnovers ensuring gets goals from them.
Kennedy should have been called out of it by another player. The pass was intended for Casboult and he would have swallowed it if Kennedy hadn’t got in the way. I doubt whether Casboult saw Kennedy but he would have been free-kicked if he had been able to balk and block for him. Poor communication by our guys and a little over-ambitious on Kennedy’s part ... and very lucky for him that Casboult isn’t Fev.
Casboult had the play in front of him. He could see it all. Either he calls Kennedy out of it, or ensure Kennedy doesn't get cleaned up.
He doesn't have to 'block' so much as basically just stop running, which is effectively all the block that is required for Kennedy to mark safely.
What kind of message does it send when you put your body on the line and get cleaned up by your own teammate? Do you think Kennedy will be as willing to go next time? Is that the kind of message we want?
Funny how you brought Fev up as he was critical of the very same thing on multiple occasions....and i would've called him out for doing the same thing.
I'll always cut someone slack off an injury. Hands up those who bagged Kennedy this year. Bet no-one owns up. Doesn't mean i'd play Levi if he can't get a kick. He should've come back though the NBs.
Speaking of Casboult and Kennedy, pretty sure Casboult broke a team rule today when he didn't block for Kennedy when he was coming back with the flight of the ball on the boundary. Guy with eyes on the ball should be called in by his teammate, not plowed into by a teammate and then abused by him. I know Casboult was desperate for a touch, but you don't have to clean up your teammates to get one. Thank f**k there was no injury to come out of it.
Weitering isnt the player he was, he doesnt defend anymore and is purely a intercept marking player...Westhoff beat him up bad early and it was largely due to JW trying to corral his man rather than play close and defend him. Not sure what his coaching instructions are but its baffling to me why he isnt playing close to his man and has this non physical approach. His decision making is also astray, he is a smart footballer making poor choices especially when kicking, kicked back into the corridor several times and failed to hit the target causing turnovers and indirectly goals.
Part of my questioning of Weitering spot in the side in the pre-season was based on some of what you just said there. He isn't great 1-on-1 and other are playing the intercept marking position better than him as specifically Jones, is taller, quicker, more agile and has more desperation when going for the interception/spoil.
Also he has a bad habit of going sideways first. It was very evident early on, all our blokes were pushing to use the corridor and Weitering would go sideways before even looking into the corridor.
A lack of confidence can do terrible things to a smart footballer. I'm guessing he is over analysing each situation when he should be playing more on instinct and not second guessing himself.
Not that it made a difference but.... The Garlett "no goal" where Pickett looked to have touched it was a bit dubious from the replay at first viewing. It was hard to see a touch as Pickett appeared to move his hand away and it wasn't clear to me he'd touched it. I'd like to see it again.
Not sure the size of the TV you were watching on, nor the quality of your eyesight, but it was clear as day to me. Pickett touched it.
That being said, i'm sure SOS will have nightmares about Michael Long tonight.
Not sure about the rules these days but it used to be that if you made a goal post move it used to be a goal. Garletts second shot was overturned on video review after the PA player smashed into the post trying to touch it. The post was wobbling like crazy before the ball went through. I thought that negated the hit-the-post rule?
Hit the back of the post too. Dodgy call I reckon.
Commentators clarified at the time.
If it is a deliberate push of the post then it won't be tolerated. I think you can even get suspended for it. Not sure about a goal, but probably a free kick in front.
If its not deliberate, as in a player is trying to touch the ball, then its a non-issue.
So assuming the commentators were correct, the umps got it right,
Polson is a dud IMO and lucky to have another contract...poor decision making and atrocious kicking, no point tackling well if you turn the ball over with brain dead decisions..
I used to think he was a dud, but am coming around. Still think he is lucky to have a contract. Decision making is not too bad, but he had some shockers today, which i gave him grace for because he's basically in his first year.
Sorry Iaj, No more slack for Casboult. He might be playing hurt but he ain't contributing. Three set shots burnt, four lousy possessions. Time to move on from this bloke. VFL Beckons.
I liked how the commentators tried to cut Casboult some slack for his goal kicking because of his injured finger......which happens to be on his left hand and as very little (if any) effect on the right footed casboult.
