Title: You're The Coach - Where Is Their Best Position ??
Post by: LordLucifer on April 28, 2016, 11:00:58 am
There are a number of players who :

- have been trialled in certain positions
- have been pigeoned-holed into a specific role
- seem to always be played out of position
- don't have a specific role according to their playing strengths.

If you were Brendan Bolton, how would you best use these guys :

Murphy
Jones
Gibbs
Smith
Simpson
Armfield
Walker
Casboult
Buckley
Everitt
Jaksch

Murphy - outside runner, HFF
Jones - 3rd tall if form warrants it, otherwise back up
Gibbs - tough inside mid
Smith - don't know
Simpson - exactly where he is, maybe less game time to better manage the last stage of his career
Armfield - wing, or around the stoppages if required.
Walker - HFF
Casboult - strictly out of the goal square, or link man up the ground, or kick out receiver as I stated previously
Buckley -don't know
Everitt  - 3rd tall, but needs to add 1%ers and effort into his game
Jaksch - swing man

I think most of those guys could fit into positions we are all pretty familiar with, it's just a matter of team balance and their work rate.

I just don't know what to do with

Clem: I would have though for him to have a future he'd have to run through the middle in the magoos just to get his hands on the ball more than he does. Reports from the magoos I've read suggest he doesn't really impact on the game. His long term future is probably small forward or back, but he's not really powerful enough to be the backman and not really a goal sneak.

His other option may be to fill the Brad Hill type role but for that your tank has to be way up there and I don't think his is. I do think there is something there, but I'm not sure we will find it at Carlton.

Buckley:  Same as Clem. Not really one thing or the other and doesn't always do the smart thing.

Murphy - Midfield (Sweeper)
Jones - FF (Strictly Inside F50)
Gibbs - Midfield (Inside)
Smith - FP (Pressure Forward)
Simpson - HBF
Armfield - Wing
Walker - HFF
Casboult - CHF (Strictly Outside F50)
Buckley - HBF
Everitt - Wing
Jaksch - CHB (Attacking Defender Like Weitering)

I don't want to see blokes like Weitering, Plowman and Jaksch anchored at FB. Let Rowe or Jammo cover that D50 role, and have these other guys get up the ground around the F50 arc as they can all kick.

I'd have Casboult pressing up the ground when the balls deep in our D50, pushing forward when we have the ball, and clearing out to a kick behind play when it's in our F50. Effectively keep him working between the arcs.

I reckon sheik is making a sneaky point about a bunch of players who have ability but not necessarily a role they are best suited to and indirectly indicating where we need to make some acquisitions.

If you were Brendan Bolton, how would you best use these guys :

Murphy - Mid
Jones - Deep Fwd
Gibbs - HFF
Smith - BP, HBF
Simpson - HBF,Wing
Armfield - FP
Walker -  Wing/HFF
Casboult - CHF (even try CHB)

Murphy - midfield
Jones - full forward (on the basis that his last quarter form wasn't an aberration)
Gibbs - half forward and midfield
Smith - depth (unless he can deliver more than just flashes of good football)
Simpson - half back and wing
Armfield - defensive forward
Walker - half forward and wing
Casboult - centre half forward
Buckley - defensive forward
Everitt - half forward and wing
Jaksch - depth (unless he becomes more consistent and committed)

I would find it difficult to fit both Armfield and Buckley and both Walker and Everitt into the 22.  Buckley has the advantage of youth but Armfield is more reliable.  Everitt has a better recent goalkicking record than Walker but Walker can rotate through the midfield and is more physical.

I agree, but could Everitt be a body down back to occasionally release Plowman or even Weitering forward?

I think if fit Walker and Armfield are no brainers, so much more physical and much harder to match up on than Buckley.

I really want to see what Armfield can do if he gets released to just play football like some others have this year.

Perhaps for me players like Jones and Everitt are competing for the same spot, or at least should be!

Jones - full forward
Gibbs - Midfield and forward

Simpson - half back/wing
Armfield - wing/forward
Walker - forward
Casboult - 2nd ruck, somewhere well away from goal where he can use his excellent marking
Buckley - running defender/midfield/forward
Everitt - half forward
Jaksch - CHF, contested marking a real strength and is kicking goals

Added a few more based on my own frustrations...

Murphy - Mid
Jones - FF
Jaksch - FF - whoever is best of these 2 plays that role, the other NBs
Gibbs - Mid
Smith - NBs
Simpson - Half Back Flank
Armfield - Fwd Pocket - pressure
Daisy - Fwd Pocket - pressure
Galluci - Fwd Pocket - pressure - whoever the 2 best options of these 3
Walker - 3rd fwd
Casboult - Roaming CHF
Buckley/DVR - I would like to see one of these develop in time to a wing for pace, DVR preferred based on quality kick
Tuohy - Not a good defender, would like to see him on the other wing given his elite kicking
Everitt  - Needs to watch tapes of Gunston, he should be able to play that same sweeping role but clearly doesnt

Murphy - where he is right now - more rest in forward line to give us more star power down there
Jones - goalsquare lead up, give him 6 games in a row
Gibbs - a la Murphy
Smith - NB's but develop as a small forward
Simpson - in his best position now
Armfield - defensive forward
Walker - second option next to Jones
Casboult - half forward leading to centreline - and make sure there are 3 guys running past for the handball when he takes a mark
Buckley - being played out of position atm - his best work is when he can run in a straight line - back pocket/half back
Everitt - half forward - he is our best kick at goal atm
Jaksch - doesn't have the smarts to be a forward yet - get him ready to take over from Jamo - plenty of gun forwards learned their craft by starting as a defender.

The other guy I think we should consider developing as a big defender is Kreuzer - can't mark in packs, but spoils well and is a great competitor on the ground.  He's not giving us too much as a ruckman atm.
