Title: In Game Action: AFL Rd 17; Carlton vs Geelong at the MCG
Post by: crashlander on July 09, 2021, 09:46:38 am
We owe Geelong a few good thrashings. Can't see it happening with half a team, but I can hope. Certainly David Teague will want to make a mark with the spectre of Clarkson hanging over his shoulders.

Bl00dy good effort from the BlueBaggers that qtr. Poor disposal by foot the only thing that let us down and preventing a qtr lead.

Can we maintain, even improve on that effort/disposal efficiency? Consecutive good qtrs is not our forte. The Pussycats will up the ante in the 2nd, as they often do. Big challenge ahead.

Post by: Lods on July 10, 2021, 05:09:17 pm
I thought that was a pretty gutsy effort...

But there just feels like there's an inevitability that they'll overwhelm us in the end.
It will only be because we're undermanned on the day.

Our best forwards are spending a lot of time well away from goal.

Poor disposal against top teams is double costly.

At the game and as a spectacle this game is sh1thouse.

Playing an extra behind the ball makes for one ugly contest.  Wouldn’t get me watching games live if this was the norm.

Geelong aren't showing anything special.
I think they may have thought, given our late outs, they just had to go around.
Our effort (apart from a couple of exceptions already mentioned) has been really good.
Still think it's a huge task...but while we keep the effort up we're still 'alive.'

Two bigger spuds than Stanley and Esava you wont find....Geelong cant win the flag with those two numpties.
We have contested well and been as good as the Cats in general, Stewart has had his own ball but apart from that the game is even and we are well in it. Defense has held up well..apart from Rohans speccy they havent taken any marks down forward and Hawkins hasnt touched it. Got lucky Rohan missed two easy ones by his standards but the rest of their forwards have been crap. Few errors creeping in and we need to quicken the game up so Geelong dont have time to settle and deliver because the dam will break eventually as our defenders tire
Someone has to play on Stewart...maybe Setterfield as he has done SFA so far. Be nice if Martin, Betts and Fogarty could impose themselves on the game too. Cripps looks banged up but has battled on well and Walsh has been his usual busy self.
I really want to win this game, Geelong have so many annoying individuals on and off the field.

Fantastic endeavour and attitude, BlueBoys. Well done... but, gotta get smarter with aggott in hand. Terrific defensive intent.

Can we keep up, and even up this endeavour?

Funny how when we (only a few blokes) try the corralling they waltz away with the aggott... can't do that v top sides. Hit the body.

If we'd played with this intent for most of the season, goodness knows where'd we be.

What a challenge the 2nd half presents... who'll be the first to wilt under this pressure? Mmm... I fear the same thing.

How can you regard yourself as a full forward and be too sh!+ scared to kick at goal in conventional manner and have no set routine. Harry lost this game because of his inability to put scoreboard pressure on Geelong when he had the chance in give the rest of team belief.

Junk time Harry is now drilling them when it's too little too late. There is no player at the club outside of Walsh who embraces the moment.

I feel as sorry for Walsh like I used to for Judd.

We had one major issue, poor conversion. You get reward for effort, and things change.

I think it was more than that. No Selwood. Dangerfield did little, Hawkins nothing.

After a couple of weeks of 18 men team efforts, it was back to Walsh + Weitering + little else.

Given what we saw tonight I'd be offering Jones a decent contract.

Why? He's a turn over merchant, something we have ample of... We should be phasing the likes of Jones out of the team.

Offer him the base contract with incentives focused on turn overs. You'll see how much of an increase in focus and care of disposal you'll get.

Not a great result and definitely need to work on the skills. Accuracy is not something that comes over night.

I suppose, from a Geelong perspective.

From Carlton's perspective I thought we did pretty good and Weitering was outstanding given how many one on ones he cleaned up against Hawkins who is a monster.
