I think that the swap of ends for Darcy and Gab has really paid off.  Gab has had her share of the footy as a defender but Darcy just hasn't got near it in the forward line.  Tonight Darcy did get the footy and that really provided a lot of support for Mua and our other defenders.  Gab just kept on putting in and got her reward on the scoreboard.  She is a smart footballer and knows how to make the most of her opportunities at either end of the ground.

I like the look of the team with the four big girls.  Serena and Taylor didn't have a huge impact but the Saints had to put a lot of defensive effort into them.  Bre and Jess pretty much did as they pleased.

Brooke's first game back was OK.  She tackled with intent and got a some decent disposals away while not really playing at her best.

I think that Harf would be pretty pleased with the team's effort tonight.  That's the brand of footy that will trouble teams in the eight and give us a sniff of finals' action.

Spot on. So good, also, to see many fewer panic handballs into traffic. Well done Harf & crew. Loved the positional changes, really gave the side more balance and brought Darcy's talent into play more.
Only our ruthless best, from Board to bootstudders will get us no. 17

I enjoy the AFLW ... when we're doing OK.  It's a bit like watching women's cricket, basketball or soccer; not quite the same as the men's games but entertaining just the same.  Women's hockey is probably closer to the men's game in terms of skill level and tempo.

I'm not sure that St Kilda was that weak.  They had players out and copped some injuries but I think that our pressure and physicality that tooks its toll and made them look ordinary.  The test will be whether we can play the same brand of footy against the teams in the 8.

you can't say that.  Its offensive and incompatible with modern societal views.

The AFLW can certainly be boring, but so can the men's game. I turned the TV off at half time in about 50% of the AFL games I watched on TV this season. One must be realistic about a nascent competition. I'm not sure they can develop for 20 years under cover of darkness, away from the public gaze. Hopefully the AFL will listen closely to the girls and take on any suggestions for improving the game.

I got that G2C  :)

I find a a lot of AFL, and a fair chunk of men's sport in general, hard to watch.

You have to learn the nuances of whatever sport it is.  Men's basketball is all about size and who can make the most emphatic dunk.  Women's basketball is more about guile and skill.

When watching AFLW, I know that the rules are different, the umpiring is often hard to follow, kicks don't travel as far, handpassing isn't the offensive weapon that it is in AFL and the physicality is a step down.  I like it though!

The AFLW in its current configuration looks like a token comp. The AFL need to get serious and invest heavily by throwing serious money at it and funding fully until the clubs can stand alone properly through sponsorship. Proper seasons along side the AFL mens, proper wages so players can be full time professionals, proper coaching and facility set ups for all teams, proper academies for the young girls coming through. The standard of football is representative of the administration and funding, improve that and watch how fast the game grows (standard and audience). At the moment, it seems half assed to me, get serious AFL.

What GIC said is basically the way forward, but it's a growing competition that needs to develop it's own history and traditions before folks fully embrace it.
You can't force 'equivalence' of 150 years of tradition in the men's game into a few short years of the women's game and expect folks to have the same depth of emotional connection.
The skeleton is now in place....it needs filling out.

I suspect you will find the AFLW is already pretty heavily sponsored, perhaps much more than fans realise.

To me the AFL walks on eggshells regarding this issue, because they might well fear that if they get it wrong they will be alienating some major sponsors of the AFL as well as the AFLW.

The problem of equal time and scheduling is more an issue of resources than will power. I suspect the AFL would have liked to run the AFLW as a curtain raisers, but the reality is the facilities required to do that in an equal opportunity manner just aren't available, so it becomes another eggshell issue. The AFL would be lambasted if the girls changeroom was a shed out the back, in fact it was lambasted in the previous season for this very issue although the reason behind it was COVID related not due to limited resources.

I mentioned before the AFLW players could have avoided some of this by willingly redirecting funds to facilities development over player wages, but it didn't happen. I'm sure the player managers have a say in this as well.

Club's aren't jumping on board for NADA, they know the dollars are there.

I think the AFL are doing a good job with AFLW.
I think there is plenty more to do, but considering it was about 10 years ago when the first ever AFL Womens match was broadcast, to now there is an 18 team competition in its 7th year is nothing short of a miracle.

The AFL had to push the AFLW in the off-season to give people who need a football fix something to watch. Build a following of sorts. Now its gradually moving to its more traditional winter/spring timeslot, and eventually seasons will get longer and it may mirror the mens game which is what most would see as the end game.

However, the AFL are playing 9 games a weekend for the mens, and would need to find a space for another 9 games of AFLW.
Keeping in mind, there is already VFL, and VFLW played during this time. So finding grounds to accommodate all is a task in itself.
Then you need to find umpires, cameramen, commentators etc to do it all justice as well.
Logistically, there is a lot to get through.

Sure, throwing money at it will help, but is not that simple.

This is growing faster than most would've predicted. The standard is increasing and will continue to do so.
You can already see some of the standouts from the early seasons are turning into bit players and getting overtaken by the younger girls who are now able to play all through their underage years, rather than stopping at 13-14.

IMO the biggest current issue is the zoning system which breeds inequality among the competition. This will take the better part of a decade to fix as if it was fixed today, you'd need to wait that long for the lists to be refreshed under the new rules (ie no-zones).

This won't even start until players wages increase to the point where they are fully professional.
Which won't start until the list sizes increase and the season is longer.
Which won't start until you can accommodate that extra amount of footy successfully (umpires etc).
Which is a problem the afl has been having for years before AFLW started.

I thought Vescio was pretty good, didn't look out of place being played out of place, probably an indication she is wasted / starved of footy when we aren't getting deep F50 entries.

I thought the team showed good flexibility, not sure why it took so long to try some of this stuff, maybe that's a learning curve for the coach.

After a shaky team 1st-Qtr I thought Moody settled and showed she is a class above for the remainder of the game.

I thought Hill and McKay got plenty of footy without being overtly dominant as they have been in past weeks, perhaps I'm just getting accustomed to them mopping up the footy. I think that can be a very good sign, McKay must be right up there now in the B&F. I'm still not convinced too much handball is a good thing for the girls, but if that helped them hit targets then I won't complain because we've not been good by foot in recent weeks.

Personally, I think the first AFLW coach that gets the girls playing more of a Gaelic style overlap run and gun game will be on a winner.

Hill and McKay featured prominently in the coaches' votes, behind Breann Moody.  You're probably right about us becoming accustomed to them getting lots of the footy.

Elise O'Dea copped a week for striking Hannah Priest.  I didn't notice it but suspect it was when there was a free kick reversal in the first quarter.  We'll miss O'Dea's grunt work around the ground.
