Yarran, although he was not a massive contibutor, showed a couple of times his ability to run through the corridor from HB - that's definitely his forte and that's what we should have him doing to get the best out of him.

The encouraging thing was that he looked pumped at the end and the win obviously meant a lot to him.

Good to see all the boys respond to MM's challenge he made earlier in the week - great sign IMO.

Said it before and I'll say it again - what an enigmatic side we are! More than a few players playing for their future and it showed.

Poor old Mick has been under siege somewhat, but I thought he scored a '9' today. Waite to the backline, Murphy swapping to and from the wing to break the tag, Tuohy under instructions to bomb a goal to break the line, Cotchin well held, Mitch showing much more composure.

Hopefully what we saw today was a sign that the players are starting to "get it". Still not perfect, but much, much better.

I thought Curnow's tackling was superb - really stepped up a notch in intensity

Haven't seen the second half yet but we get back into this game because of an aggressive and positive on ball brigade.

Not Judd, Murph and three taggers.

Makes it hard because the oppostition actually have to worry about more than shutting down one player.

Easily Eddies best half for the year.

With Cachia & Carrazzo not playing today, Curnow was our only tagging midfielder in the team and we won.

Mere coincidence ?? I think not !!

Unbelievable...... just imaging the outcome if we hadn't coughed up a 5 to 6 goal lead to them in Q1!!!

Well done lads, the injection of youth paid dividends......

Re Bell, he's only had 12 games prior to today. He's got time to improve.....
Finals, then 4 in a row!

Bell was doing a fair bit of grunt work in terms of  spoiling and ball winning in the clinches, which I think we benefited from. He just needs to improve his disposal which lets him down atm. I'm confident that will get some focus as he's very useful to have around the clearances and contested ball situations.

Also let's the opposition know he's there - ask Cotchin.

Quote
1. Jack's mixed day
A hush went around the MCG when Jack Riewoldt came up clasping his right knee after landing awkwardly in a final-quarter marking contest. Thankfully for the Tigers Riewoldt – after receiving some treatment – returned to action. Earlier, the Tiger spearhead started with a bang by kicking two goals in the opening term and being involved in Richmond's first four score involvements, opposed to Blues youngster Josh Bootsma. After the rot had sent in, Michael Jamison was swung on to Riewoldt and played a terrific role in blanketing the Tigers star. Riewoldt did not register a goal on Jamison, who continues to fly under the radar as a key defender who gets the job done each week.

2. Ellis learns the ropes
Richmond's Brandon Ellis was having a big impact on the contest with seven disposals, two goals, 100 per cent efficiency, three inside 50s and best afield honours in the first quarter. Everything appeared to be going his and his team's way, until Blues coach Mick Malthouse swung Dennis Armfield on to him. Ellis' influence quickly dissipated and the Blues managed to work themselves back in to the game. Armfield's tenacity and pressure seemed to get in Ellis' head, as he held him to just six possessions after quarter time. Ellis has had an impressive season, but he will learn a lot from today about what it takes to successfully shake a tag.

3. Mick's bird issues
Never shy of bringing up the bizarre in his post-game press conference, Mick Malthouse was in typical form after the match against the Tigers. As an aside to praising his team after its gutsy 10-point win, Malthouse turned his attention to the birds on the MCG playing surface. Malthouse spoke to young Troy Menzel after the game about why he shanked one of his kicks at goal. Menzel blamed the birds, prompting Malthouse to call for some, yep, 'bird control': "This is something we've really got to look at. As he (Menzel) ran, a whole heap of birds flew up in front of him and he said it just put him straight off. We can't have sport like that on this ground, we've got to be able to eliminate that."

4. The V6 engine firing on all cylinders
Carlton coach Mick Malthouse declared Mitch Robinson was "running on four cylinders for a six cylinder car." Well, clearly Robinson was listening and felt he had a point to prove against the Tigers. Coming back in to the team after being dropped a fortnight ago, Robinson's second quarter was something to behold. His physicality around the contests was central to the Blues roaring back in to the game. Robinson is often criticised for being over the top, but he found the right amount of aggression against the Tigers and it showed in an impressive display.

5. Tiger stars quieted
It's not often that Dustin Martin and Trent Cotchin are held in check. But that's exactly what happened against the Blues. Martin finished with just 10 disposals and no goals, while Cotchin managed just 13. Cotchin seemed to be a shadow of himself, struggling to have any real impact on the game. Ed Curnow did a tremendous job in a run with role, at times, while Zach Tuohy was the major nullifying influence on Martin.
Finals, then 4 in a row!

It looked like it was going to be a humiliating defeat in the first quarter. Absolutely woeful and the move to put Boostma on Riewoldt just had disaster all over it. Murphy handballing backwards when he was running through the guts just forward of centre half back made me think we had absolutely zero idea how to play this game.

Then early in the second quarter, Betts lays a tackle that spills the ball over the line and just his attack on the man I thought something would come of it. It's amazing how little acts can change the tone of the game and I reckon that was it.

Add Robinson and McLean and suddenly we were up and about and running hard for each other. That was the difference between the last three quarters and a number of weeks. Player far more willing to work hard and create options for one another instead of sitting there confuddled.

A great win, desperately needed and maybe it just gets the wheel turning in the right directions, setting us up for next year.

I like how much strength Menzel has through his hips. Usually a very good sign for a footballer.

As president of the Tom Bell fan club I refute the accusers attacks on his awareness and disposal......we need Bell in this team and the kid has not been given a fair go.
It was his body in the packs along with Robbo's aggression that provided the pathway for other players and stopped the Tigers mids from getting the footy and dominating the clearances. Sure he gave the ball back by foot a couple of times and Jackson dragged him down in the last 5 minutes but hey it would have been nice for one of his teammates to let him know he had to get rid off the ball.
He missed a tackle early as well when he tried to bump but he also shook Cotchin up with a nice hip and shoulder and stood up in a tackle to give the ball off for a Mclean goals I think it was...

Bell needs educating in the ones not this stupid play him one week, then drop him the next week and leave him in the NB's for a month or more....his awareness will only improve with game time.

Casboult looks to have won the battle for the tall forward/ruck spot...some difficult marks and his large frame was what was needed vs Maric.
Warnock did nothing around the groun but his ruckwork was ok and negated Maric.

Touhy blanketed Martin and continues his role as specialist goalkicker from 50m.........the big improver is Curnow ans he looks to have the mantle as No1 tagger.

Menzel.....classy player, only needs a few touches to have an impact.

Waite.....not really suited to CHB IMO but he battled on and I thought the commentators on Fox were harsh on him at times

Graham...came on and can sniff out the ball really well....lacks a bit of depth in his kicking but a promising player.

Yarran....topical player...not enough for me and ditto for Eddie.

Scotland and Simpson, both played well...leaders and you could see the win meant something to Scotland...

Jamison...good game on Reiwoldt..

McInnes..old fashioned defender and was ok

Hendo...gave us a target and competed well...

Armfield....ordinary early but given another tagging role and he responded...kicking is still very wonky though.

Mclean....nice game, looked composed, kicked goals that got us back in the game and one of our best.

Bootsma..had a shocker...everything he did turned to crape but there is something about the kid to like and we need to stick with him....

Robbo....played like a man on a mission and when the chips were down he was one of the few fighting on....good sign was he looked to handball a bit more and
he might be saving his career if he can keep that standard up.

Cookie...Glad to see you could see what I saw with Tom Bell....his big body is a must for the senior team.
