The Sports Desk / Re: Gout Gout
I was involved in LA for a few years, and have had a life long interest in T & F. Kids bodies change as they grow get get slower some get faster. Good coaches and clubs emphasize trying your best at all events and try not to focus too heavily on one or two. High jumpers can become triple jumpers. Sprinters being explosive can become throwers. This is not understood and kids get burnt out when the from in their preferred events drops off.

Agree 100% on the comment on C & H playing too deep, and leave Kemp down forward to mix things up.

IMHO Ithink Moir is something special. Play him. He is still under the radar / underestimated and therefore not respected yet. No better time to announce himself and do some damage.

While finals are still mathematically possible, a team like the Hawks deserves that spot way more than we do...simple as that. With 6 players likely to be missing from last weekend, there's not much left to choose from so lets have a look at Moir, Lemmey, Binns, Wilson, Carroll.....even Mirkov. He couldn't be any worse than Pittonet's been in the last month.

Big agree on Mirkov. We need to know how he goes. He'll get lots of hit outs purely on his size, and he'll be hitting out to ball users who are significantly better players. They'll make him look better. Sure it will be hard for him, but we have to find out how he goes. Pittonet's (I am a fan btw - big heart) feet barely leave the ground. Mirkov is so tall that the opposition ruckman will be more worried about stopping him than doing anything good themselves. That could mean the oppositions clearance ball strategy is compromised at least. If we were already done and dusted Mirkov in would be a better idea probably, but big guys need time and need to start somewhere. Harry Madden took a while to get going.

Robert Heatley Stand / Re: AFL Rd 17 2024 Pre Game Prognostications Carlton vs GWS
I don't think he will and Hewett will come in.

But then again, using logic I learnt from Vizzini the Sicilian in the "Princess Bride."

That's exactly what GWS will be thinking....that Kennedy will miss and Hewett will come in.

So, they'll prepare for Hewett.

On the other hand GWS will know that is what we think they will believe and we'll actually play Kennedy.

So they'll prepare for Kennedy.

But many of us suspect that the Kennedy recovery is too quick.
So GWS better be ready for Hewett.

As you wish

Robert Heatley Stand / Re: AFL Rd 11 2024 Post Game Postulations Carlton vs Gold Coast
I'm not averse to giving the removing the prior opportunity a go.
But I think we need to see it trialled before we make the change to determine how much of a difference it would make.
Just for a bit of fun I watched a quarter  a few weeks ago and tried to 'umpire' it on the basis of get the ball and if tackled release it virtually immediately in a proper manner...no prior.
Of course it may very well  have been my interpretation, but I only counted 4 occasions when it would have made a difference...when a free might have been paid.
I'm guessing it was probably a lot greater on the weekend
I wonder how much difference it would make to the game, but we won't know unless we trial it...with umpires a bit more accomplished than my good self :))

I'm open to trying it as well. I think when the ball is live we may see some kicking off the ground and fisting/paddling the ball forward. Shepherding may come back into the game (its not what it was these days) to give the guy trying to take possession a chop out.

Robert Heatley Stand / Re: What to do with Jack
Well I kicked this thread off and went to the game on Sunday night. I was looking hard but didn't see much that thrilled me. Most of the comments above were reinforced by Jacks performance. Maybe a better structure would help - look what it did for Brad Pearce in '95 (he was a very quick mover though and Jack ain't). Also I don't want to see him flying for marks like he does because he rarely brings them down. I think his papers are just about stamped.

I actually watched Jack play a game when he was in year 12. He was serviceable but he never owned the game like you'd expect any potential draftee to do. He was playing his heart out though, I guess that's kept me in his corner all these years. Sadly I think he needs to find a role somewhere else. Its needs to be in a really good team though, with players as smart as him around him.

Robert Heatley Stand / What to do with Jack
He's out ,in and out again. Time on ground 37% last week.

I think he's one of our smarter players in terms of finding space. I also think he loves playing for us as much or more than anyone. He stands up and flies the flag without question.

I think his best position is forward. Charlie and especially Harry are being mauled by multiple players and yet we still kick it to them. If Jack was given some time ply his trade as a smart forward presenting another option (he is very evasive I think) rather than be used as a swingman (that's how it appears to me) we and he would be better off.  I'm not sure that he has enough pace off the mark to be effective down the back and or in the middle. I swear I've seen players , knowing Silvagni is on their hammer, take that extra moment to gather themselves because they know they can burn him off. Floating around as a smart forward presenting options is his best role in my opinion.

I write this because it rips me up to see a capable, smart guy who wants to be out there, who leaves nothing out there not getting a run.

Robert Heatley Stand / Re: AFL Rd 6 2022 Pre Game Prognostications Carlton vs Fremantle
- Silvagni is an excellent contributor against non-ruckman opponents - however, I think we need a better back up ruckman unless the Duckers are similarly limited.
- Newnes performed admirably (especially early) and seemed more dangerous in attack (although he missed some opportunities) than LOB has been - deserves to hold his spot.
- Cottrell was good enough and deserves to hold his spot.
- Parks was passable as our 3rd tall defender but might struggle to hold his spot if a better option is available.

- Martin and Fisher showed up at stages - Durdin and Owies had limited opportunities but consistently delivered pressure when the ball went forward (not so often in the 2nd half) - one of them might get a rest (for team balance) if we need to play a back up ruckman.
- Kennedy has gone off the ball the past 2 weeks but probably has enough credits in the bank to hold his place.

I think Kennedy is a carrying a quad injury. He may well be sitting out if Cripps wasn't already out.

Speaking of flogs. I'd hope that the review finds Lloyd in need of replacement recommends Neil Balme. His pedigree - 9 GFs for 6 wins I think.

Robert Heatley Stand / Re: Pre game Banter: AFL 2020 Rd 14: Carlton vs Collingwood
Kennedy is clearly the better player at present.....but in saying that, Cottrell is a better runner and more physical. Long term i think he will inherit the tagging role from Ed. Pies have a few talented midfielders i wouldn't mind trying to stop....

For team balance, i think we'd be better off playing both and dropping a ruck.....but nobody deserves to be dropped.

I think Kennedy is quite physical in the way he plays. Watch him. Cottrell has that Mitch Robinson kamikaze look about him IMHO , which makes him look more physical than others. Whether its energy well spent lets see over time. Robbo has learnt to play smarter over the journey since he left us I think. He is still no good with a mike in his hand though!
