Title: Rd 19: Carlton vs Freo: Pre Game Panic
Post by: crashlander on July 24, 2014, 07:44:56 pm
I know we have the bye this weekend, but nobody has brought up Freo as yet. So I thought I had best start things off.
Pity Freo stuffed up so badly last week: they probably won't do the same again in a hurry. Ross Lyon will be after them with a pitch fork!

I don't see us beating Freo, especially in Perth. Bit stranger things have happened. Look at last weekend!

Anybody have any idea why the game is being played on a Thursday? Some public holiday? To be honest I would not expect this to lead to a huge crowd, but what do I know?

With Everitt a definite non starter and Menzel unlikely, do we bring in Garlett? His form has been pretty excremental, but then Waite's wasn't exactly brilliant before his promotion.
I wonder of the Match Committee will consider blooding one of the Ciarans? Sheehan missed last week, but he has been solid and is neither small nor slow.
Maybe Blaine Johnson: it would be nice for him to play in front of his family and friends.

GOLD. :D

It will be interesting to see how Freo respond. They are not montes to hit back hard as their form was already a little shaky. I reckon we are a chance.

Yes, Freo appear to be more fragile than last year. Their small forwards butchered us last year: most of them are not there or are lacking serious form.
We have to be some sort of chance.
But our issue will be getting the ball out of the middle.

Cripps?
About time we had another look at him I reckon.

Think we will lose by about 4-5 goals...Freo will be dirty after the Stkilda loss and will come out firing...on their own dung heap I expect us to struggle and
I think their big mids in Mundy, Barlow and Fyfe will be all over us.....
Any player be it Murphy or Gibbs who gets Crowley I would switch forward to the goal line and drag Crowley out of his comfort zone.
Big Test for Wood if the Giant plays and I wouldnt bother playing Garlett...we dont need blokes ducking their head and shirking contests vs hard units like Freo and I think we will miss Robbo in this regard....

Cripps or Johnson for Robbo is fine with me...although I have a feeling that Lucas might get one last chance....

I'd like to see speed brought in. If that means Jeffy and Armfield then i'm ok with that. We do play well at Subi but what's made us competitive in the past has been SPEED !

Close till half time the the Ross Lyon Grind will wear us out.

30 points I reckon

Which is why I would like to recruit a bit more of it: just with better disposal.

Maybe Armfield: has he done his penance for the crap game against Collingwood? His form doesn't appear to be that good as yet at the Baby Blues.

Cripps: now their is a conundrum! I don't think they are ready to lay him again just because it takes time to get fitness back after a broken leg. But he does have the form that others lack and he has the motivation, being a WA boy.

We beat StKilda by 85 points, StKilda beat Freo by 58 points, therefore we will win by about 143 points. Put the champagne on ice.

In this case I could accept Cripps as the sub. Need to get games into the kids pronto.

Cripps has had an injury riddled year..would prefer they 'rest' him in the twos rather than have him aggravate anything prior to the all important Utah ski trip (aka the preseason). Blood him next year after he has bulked up a bit.

This will be a good test for is. They made us look beyond impotent the last time, we just couldn't do anything. If we can avoid looking lost, then that will be a step forward, not sure about coming away with the points...

Feeling a little bit confident about this one, we generally play subi pretty well. We have nothing to lose and sides that have nothing to lose are very dangerous and take a lot more risks. If the risks pay off and Waite/Henderson and Levi can cause head aches I smell an upset brewing! >:D

Yep strange game that. They got a break on us a few times and we came back but no one can doubt the ease of which they brushed us aside when push came to shove in the last quarter. The Murphy Gibbs mix up in the last term said it all.

It looks like we were down by 10 but I remember thinking we were nowhere near them. It was a 6 goal loss but it felt like more than that to me.

Yeah they definitely had us covered especially in a physical sense. That was the thing about the game, our blokes actually put in and like I said, they brushed us aside when it counted most. It was quite scary to see how easily they did it.

No, we trailed at the end of every quarter!

Our mids, except Judd who was mauled by Crowley and still won, were smashed by Barlow and Fyfe! Was Murphy, Gibbs and Yarran's worst games of 2013 if I recall, also I think Carrazzo got injured in that game!

Don't know if we will win or not, but they did appear in good spirits.

Three years ago when I watched them at the WACA they were a pretty fracture group.

Close to the slowest side we could pick, but three hard bodies that we will need against that mob.  We are barrel scraping given that about 15 players on our list are essentially un-pickable.

Fair dinkum...we're no hope. Been saying to the boys at work, if we bring speed , ala Garlett and Armfield, we'll be a sneaky.
Who do they put in instead, McLean and Carrots ffs.

I know none of the above have been setting the world on fire but we play that ground so well when we have the speed to take advantage of the open spaces.

I'm calling it now, no f####n hope! >:(

No opponent for Sam Rowe presuming Jamo gets Pavlich?.....White would probably get Mayne....

Gibbs on Fyfe?.....Bell on Barlow?.....Mundy will be a problem with no Everitt....
You look down back and they have the players to handle Henderson, Waite, Casboult....
Lucas(if he plays), Ellard and young Graham are going to be weak links vs the big bodied Freo players...be a good test for Graham to see if he can lay some tackes, make em stick and win some footy.

To me it just looks like trouble all over the ground and we are a few players short in terms of matchups...

We need to have them chasing us, we do not want to have blokes like Murphy and Gibbs guarding a bunch of slugs!

Freo's problem is they dont kick enough goals as they are negative and only have one KP forward of any note....with regards pace I agree they are not quick but have players who are hard to tackle and bring down and that is an achillies heel for us vs the Swans, Hawks etc...we may catch them but they break our tackles and tire our smaller bodies out..
I can see a player like Mundy just bursting through our players and driving it long especially in the last part of the game when we are tired....and a pest like Ballantyne kicking a lot of cheap goals on someone like Touhy..

True and last time we played Tuohy played on Balantyne who in fact kicked 3, but Tuohy kicked three as well!

Last time we played Freo our mids were smashed, Sandilands marked uncontested in our back line as well as pushing forward. He won't get that sort of space this time and with Clark he will need to be motoring to cover Wood, Rowe, Casboult and Henderson! I expect heavy forward rotations from our talls keeping the opposition in motion.

I scratch my head and wonder just what Malthouse is trying to do.

I think he is trying to reinforce cultural selection.  You do the right things, you get a game.  You don't, you wont.  Its why I don't support playing the kids just to give them a game.  If you don't put your hand up you wont get selected, unless its by default, and you can bet that if you don't do the right things, then even after a default selection odds are your straight back out again.  Whats the point in playing a kid to see what he can do, when he wont do what you ask of him to earn a game in the first place?

That's the cultural issue at our club.  I think its being sorted, but it takes time.

When you've got robbo suspended, kreuz injured, everitt injured, menzel injured, buckley injured, cripps lacking match fitness, walker injured etc etc - it's no surprise those are our Ins and emergencies.

Jeffy isn't playing for off field reasons. If we took him to Perth we might as well leave him there.

So reading between the lines in our team selection, Johnson should start the sub.

I would be fairly comfortable putting a bet on a late change, and one of Armfield or Lucas being the starting sub for this match.
