I rarely missed those games when I was in my teens.  Of course, the VFA was an independent competition and I was a vocal supporter of our local suburban team; the mighty Burgers!

I lived next to the home of the Box Hill Mustangs/Hawks for 30 odd years but any thoughts of changing allegiance withered when the Mustangs became the Hawks.  I now happily support the NBs, except when they play Coburg and, in my mind, the contest is between Coburg and Preston.

Go Blues ... or Coburg  :-\

Lived in the Vermont area for many years before leaving that area about 30 years ago now, living close to the Vermont footy ground and Jacko's car yard. The "Stangas" were a favourite of mine but I could never come to terms with the colours of their jumper.  :o

Have been a Blues fan almost from the day I arrived in Melbourne.

I lived in Box Hill Sth but was a Preston fan, never really enjoyed the NB's conversion from Preston and dont like the alliance either.....loved the old VFA and Preston vs Coburg was a battle royal with Harold Martin vs Phil Cleary coaching.....

Agreed, I think that the AFL should bring back the reserves and let the VFL stand alone as an alternative path to the TAC Cup, another pathway kids or mature age types who do not make the cut!

I played in the same team as Phil from under 15s until he skipped under 19s and played seniors with Coburg Ammos before signing with Coburg in the VFA.  I was having a jar or two with my best mate at the footy on Sunday and he mentioned feeling just a little sad that his local team - Strathmore - had pumped West Coburg with Phil's two boys playing.

Agreed, I think that the AFL should bring back the reserves and let the VFL stand alone as an alternative path to the TAC Cup, another pathway kids or mature age types who do not make the cut!

Do you remember Rod Galt's cartoon about the huge VFL pig taking over the VFA piglet's Sunday timeslot?  A lot of water has flowed under the bridge since then but I think Rod's premise was correct.  The AFL should have a genuine reserves competition that is separate from the VFL.  Apart from providing an alternative path to the AFL, the separation of the VFL and AFL would eliminate the crazy second tier fixture with its plethora of byes.  Blokes pressing for AFL selection need to be given every chance to make it.

I'd actually like to see an AFL Under 19s competition as well.
The draft could be for VFL/State League and any U/19s not happy with their club pathway.
The cost could be subsidised by the AFL, who aren't short a quid.

North built their strong teams of the 1990s off the back of a group of kids who'd been together since their U/19 days.

So did we.   Sexton,  Ratten,  Kouta, Allan,  Brown all came from the last of the U19s.

In some respects VAFA Premier is now superior to VFL, the VAFA is very powerful and has a lot of AFL support.

Too many old boys in the system, the VFL got eroded from both sides! VAFA, playing for free, yeah right!!!

Amen, surely the $$ are irelevant?

The AFL does more to shoot itself in the foot than any competing code could ever dream of....

Their hone ground is still at Coburg, but they call it Piranha Park these days. Somehow I doubt they know the word 'piranha' does not just refer to carnivorous fish these days. I have heard from a number of sources that 'piranha' is used to represent sex for money in Brasil. Not having been there, I can only go on what I've heard or read. When I first saw it, the implication to me was clear: Coburg was a brothel. And while it tickled my admittedly strange sense of humour, I can't imagine it would have the same effect on the people of Coburg.

No mention of Nick Graham. He must have gone to Perth as the travelling Emergency.

Thank god it isn't at Piranha Park today (the old City Park).
Seriously the worst oval on the planet when it's wet, a gluey stinking boggy morass akin to the Somme in 1916. They must top dress it with raw sewage it used to stink so bad,  dogs used to drink from puddles and die.   The black mud used to have gravel and grit in it which yielded cuts which used to fester almost instantly.  Coupled with the ice cold water afterwards,  what a deadset dump.

Makes Cramer Street look like the 'G.

Willy beat Richmond, Sandy lead Casey, Werribee beat Box Hill(!) and we're kicking straight.
Another goal to Tom Wilson.

He's a small forward come midfielder a little like Ben mcglyn.

OK, let's see;
Sam Fisher
181 cm tall
79 kg
Formerly part of the GWS Academy and team mate of Kennedy and Macreadie.
Fisher probably played as more of a small forward at Sydney, where he did kick goals. The highlights package the NBs had was of him kicking goals, not taking marks or making big tackles or clearances. Sydney apparently didn't want him to leave, but their salary cap issues meant someone had to go and he drew the short straw.
Fisher, as a midfielder, plays a game not dissimilar to Zac Fisher: he runs hard and shows guts. However, I don't think he is as quick as Zac. What did surprise me pleasantly was his agility: he makes his way through traffic much better than I expected. Like Zac, he is more likely to kick than to handball, but Zac has a longer kick, I think.
When I first saw him I thought he would be more of an outside player, a finisher. But as the year has gone on he has really shown me that his inside work is good. His stats at the moment suggest that about half his possessions are contested and that he is getting more clearances.
He is not large physically, although 181 cm and 79 kg is considerably more than Zac Fisher has.
He also appears to be maturing as a player. At 20 years old I think he is worth a rookie spot.
