Blah-Blah Bar / Re: Juvenile Criminals - Should They Do Jail Time ??
It's a good thing I never smacked my son; he's now 20cm taller and 20kg heavier.  My daughter could beat me up too - I think I smacked her once  ;)

In fact, I couldn't ask for better children; both high achievers with well developed social consciences (not sure what I did right) but they both did the odd irresponsible thing when they were growing up.

Juvenile offenders can be sentenced to detention, but only as a last resort.

The young person's behaviour, as an indicator of lack of remorse, may well have an impact on the severity of his penalty.

There have been calls for parents to be punished for the offences of their children but it would have to be on a case by case basis.  From what you've described Sheik, the father deserves a whack.

Strongly disagree Gozza.  The second time we kicked ourselves out of it but the first they had players getting out the back and kicking goals as a result of having more run.  That after we had them on toast when we were able to compete.  We fell away they didnt.

PEDS.  After seeing the way they came out in the second half vs Freo over at Pattersons, it became clear to me that they had a physical edge.

So after the whole thing blew up in February, they were still using alleged substances throughout the course of the season were they? That's a crock of sh1t.

The long term and lasting effects of PEDs are well known Gozza.  We've been through this on the old board while you were AWOL.

Fair enough.

But - we led Essendon by 31 points midway through the third quarter in round 11. Surely even the long term effects of such things wouldn't just flick a switch like that.

In round 22, the Blues kicked 9.22.....that costs a game of footy every day of the week - absolutely nothing to do with PEDs at all.

Much easier to look for excuses though.

I suspect we were completely stuffed midway through the 3rd quarter in rd 11 - and we weren't the only team to get run down by the Cheats.  If I remember correctly, we had a chance for another goal and fluffed it.

By round 22, the Cheats had pretty well come back to the field in terms of endurance and it was poor kicking for goal that cost us a game we should have won.  They were let off the leash by Hird and played as if they had nothing to lose in the last quarter; something Malthouse should have anticipated and countered.

I met one of the members of the Overcoat Gang once, complete with cropped Port Melbourne piers.  He had the softest handshake I have ever experienced.  Not that that's a bad thing  8)

Comes back to very poor recruiting. KPPs do not grow on trees, in fact, I'd say they're as hard to get now as they've ever been. Club has had ample opportunity to sort this out over the last few years.

If KPPs don't grow on trees Gozza, how has the club had ample opportunity to sort this out?

I reckon the club has been pretty innovative in trying to solve the KPP issue but their plans haven't quite worked out yet.  If one of Watson, Rowe and Casboult comes good in 2014, and the others are there about, we'll be flying.

Of course, that will lead to calls to trade them out to bring in some hack who wants to come back to Victoria  ::)

Having grown up in an era when you knew that we would always have a few extra games in the dark at Albert Park and wearing my Carlton jumper to school guaranteed at least one fight a day, I may be little more patient with our current premiership drought.

Of course, it is a different era and it takes planning, resources, hard work, good decision making and more than your share of luck to make the top 4, let alone a GF.

We are on an upward trend, even if that trend was slowed by injuries in 2012 and the appointment of a new coach in 2013.  Hopefully, the coach and the playing group have made their adjustments and we'll perform up to expectations in 2014.

The only real concern I have with the club is the lack of focus on development.  Without dedicated development coaches and a plan for ensuring our VFL players are AFL ready, we can't cover injuries or expect a sustained period at the top of the ladder.

Robert Heatley Stand / Re: Yarran over a fit of the blues: The Age
I thought it was a good article that revealed positive signs for the future, and a pragmatic approach to Eddie's departure.

Some interesting stats, particularly when you consider that his form was down:

Quote
Despite recording the second fewest disposals of his career, he would finish with a career-high 26 goals from 51 scoring shots - 21 more than in any other season. However, set shots were an issue, converting 5.10.

When focused, his ability to pressure opponents was unquestioned, finishing equal first with Jeff Garlett for tackles inside 50 and third for disposals in that zone.

Yes Baggers that is an impressive statement!

I only saw the one live NB game - the one you piked out on ;) - and they were pretty impressive in accounting for the eventual premiers.

There's a core of talent there, but there's something missing, not to mention a disconnect with the Carlton team.

I often have a look at the Box Hill Hawks training sessions and I can see the Hawthorn style permeating everything they do.

Nice work Simmo!

You have to admire Simmo and a lot of the other young men who give their all in our great game, then go that extra yard for people that need a bit of a leg up!

Robert Heatley Stand / Re: Yarran to jog in GF Sprint
Yarran clearly tried to set himself up for the final by coasting in to fourth place in the heat.

As soon as he realised that he couldn't match Dangerfield, he backed off and probably as instructed by the fitness staff.
