VFL 2024 Rd 4 Carlton vs Port Melbourne at Carlton

Port haven't won a game yet. Neither have we. But do we have enough guys to put a team on the park?

Carlton V Port Melbourne
Backs: [61] Tyson Sruk, [25] Jaxon Binns, [63] Kristian Ferronato
Half Backs: [31] Harry Lemmey,  [45] Alex Mirkov,  [34] Rob Monahan
Centres:  [39] Alex Cincotta,  [40] Hudson O'Keeffe,  [67] Aiden Mills
Half Forward: [43] Ashton Moir,  [50] Zavier Maher,  [51] Heath Ramshaw
Forwards:  [52] Liam McMahon,  [54] Ned Cahill,  [55] Lachlan Young
Rucks:  [57] Luke Nelson,  [58] Michael Lewis,  [59] Tom Phillips
Int: [60] Blake Kuipers,  [64] Archie Stevens,  [77] Will White,  [79] Jack Lefroy,  [80] Bailey Lambert,  [74] Logan Prout,  [71] Callum Verrell
Emergencies: [70] Darcy Hogg,  [56] Flynn Riley,  [76] Lachlan Swaney,  [68] Jess Gedi

Very good to see Mirkov named. He is probably a way short of a gallop, but having him on the field is a bit plus. The other thing is that he gives our mids a decent look at the ball.
O'Keefe did pretty well last week, but he doesn't give our mids the sort of service that Mirkov can when he's up and about.
Nice to see Tyson Sruk named for us. He was like Ferranato, considered stiff not to be drafted. He gets a lot of the ball from half back.
Ferranato was OK last week, but clearly needed a run.

Interesting to see Darcy Hogg and Flynn Riley named as emergencies, Hogg because I want to see him play, Riley because he is a 206 cm tall ruckman. Does that mean our seniors are going to have ruck issues? I have no idea, but it bodes poorly.

Nice to see Lachie Swaney named as well. He is one of our VFL leaders, when he can get on the park. He is an assistant coach for the girls and appears to be highly regarded. But, like Maher, he has been cruelled by injury.

Like seeing Monahan named on the half back... he'll learn more there.

You can’t give much credence to that line up; Jaxon Binns FB, Alex Mirkov CHB, Hudson O’Keeffe C, etc.  I suspect it’s just the team list assigned positions at random.

I don’t mind Monahan deviating from the Irishmen are HBFers model.  He shows a bit of flair as a forward and I’d persist with him there.  An occasional run in the midfield and a defensive role at the end of quarters should round out his development.

Harry Lemmey laid a great tackle; long arms just reached the guernsey of an opponent who thought he'd run away from his slower opponent only to be reefed backwards and into the turf.

I think Harry looks more comfortable and involved in defence.

Someone needs to let Rob Monahan know that you don't really need to kick the bladder out of the ball when you're having a shot from the fifty.

All part of his steep learning curve and not a bad effort for a bloke in his third serious game of footy  :)

Lemmey looks a better player down back and maybe a chance to make a Key defender, won the ball well and used it ok for a big fella although his opponent from the WAFL who has a famous VFA name in Jimmy Miller had a decent game too. The other player who looks a class above most is Moir, dont reckon he will ever play too many four quarter games but everything he does is classy even when he tackles(laid a great one in the last quarter) and he knows where the goals are and plays with a bit of maturity.
Binns can hit a target and runs hard, but lacks a bit of physicality when tackling and also can hang back a bit when he needs to be attacking the ball. Cincotta was ok without being great and both Okeefe and Mirkov lowered their colours to the Port ruckman(Flockhart?) who was impressive.
Xavier Maher was BOG but for me remains a good VFL player only....

Frosty went well for Carlton too in the mid 60s.

Showing your age Jim😉🤐...yep Frosty Miller did play for the Blues and went on to be a star VFA player for Dandenong and has the goalkicking award in the VFL named after himself. Left footer from memory who kicked torps and along with his little leftie mate Pat Flaherty made my life as a Preston supporter miserable as a kid...
