Title: AFLW 2022 - R2 vs Brisbane @Maroochydore NO LONGER - Now vs Geelong @GMHBA
Post by: kruddler on January 09, 2022, 08:43:07 pm
Reigning premiers got embarrassed against arch rival Adelaide in R1 and will be looking to make amends.

We will want to bounce back after a disappointing R1 as well. Have we got the class to do it? Are playing what could be the best 2 teams in the league in the first 2 rounds a blessing in disguise to force us to lift our game?

Not sure of the ins/outs yet, but i'd be bringing in Poppy Schaap if fit. She is a player that everyone will love. Energiser bunny in a small package with a heart as big as pharlaps.

Hopefully Egan gets up.
Not sure what is up with McEvoy
Prespakis limped off at the final siren which is a worry we don't need either.

Do we get anyone back?
Wilson? Hill??

Hard to find the injury list for the women at the moment. It would be very useful to have Hill and/or Wilson available. That would improve our defence significantly.
I'd be tempted to bring in Poppy Schaap: we need more goals and she is a goal kicker who can make something out of nothing.

I wonder if those under-done were excluded simply because of the weather the AFLW is played in, even some of the fittest from both sides were struggling by the final siren.

You wouldn't want to be out there under-done!

Personally, I think it's a scheduling error to play any of these games before 6pm anywhere except perhaps Tassie!

AFLW is not a summer sport!

I also worry about the ground conditions, and the effects of ground conditions and muscle fatigue on injuries like those ACLs. The girls are already more susceptible to such injuries, and we are playing the season in potential conditions which make things worse!

I dont think weather had anything to do with picking the side.

But in terms of injuries...thats another story.

Add the heat to the 16 on the ground, as well as the lasso rule which encourages faster play and you see we are pushing these part-time athletes to breaking point.

That being said, injuries will occur and perhaps its a freak weekend and we'll get donuts over the next couple.
Sample size is too small to make a call one way or another.

Grace Egan is out for 4-6 weeks.

Broke 2 ribs and got a punctured lung.

Tough luck for a courageous effort of standing under the ball.

Quote
Egan joins second-year Blue Mimi Hill on the injury list, with the Game Changers continuing to adopt a ‘wait-and-see’ approach on the youngster’s availability in her return from an ACL injury sustained last season.

No mention of Wilson.

I think I'd rather be playing Brisbane, to be honest. But, so be it.

Yes and No.

Lions are low on players, sure, but they still won the flag last year.

Cats only had 1 win for the year and finished 2nd last.

Something not sitting right about all of this.

30 players on the list.

21 players named in the team
2 players named as emergencies
2 confirmed injuries - Egan + Hill
---
25 players.

5 players not on any list
1. Wilson
2. Schaap
3. Milford
4. Vernon
5. Vickers

Top 2 on that list, should be in the side IMO. The fact they are not, and have not been mentioned anywhere makes me think they may have covid (potentially others too). I know there is plenty of it going around and its knocked out Lions and Dogs who can't field a fit 21 players, so who knows.

Missed all of the 1st Qtr, looks to be a game of two very different plans. We're holding onto the footy, Cats are kicking long to a contest.

Class starting to come through now. Should run away with it, but cats wont throw in the towel yet, so can't let the foot off the throat.

Only picked up the game from the half way mark of the 3rd but sheesh, too many skill errors. Want to be careful or this simple game plan of the Pussy Cats (long game) might just undo plenty of good work. Fingers crossed they gals clean up their skills in the last - handballs hit targets and marks are held. Like the tackling.

Great handball smother on the wing... if only GG could have converted. Enjoying the game.

Maddy took the game by the scruff of the neck in that final qtr. Wish I'd seen more of the game but it looks like our forward line needs work... came out too quickly and opportunities not capitalised on.

But a win is a win is a win... bravo Blues. Plenty of improvement needed, especially midfield forward line connect.

Indeed. A win is a win is a win. But things do not bode well.

5 girls (basically 1/4 of the side) in the middle for the song (their first win) should show you that we are not at full strength.

Losing Brooke Walker before the game hurt.

Add that to Grace Egan, and yet to return Mimi Hill. Throw in the MIA Wilson (and IMO similarly MIA Schaap) and you have an improvement across 1/4 of the team just like that.

So, we need to take these wins, then hope we get a few of our players back against some of the better teams.

Yes, but you can see the moments when it works we looked a class above the Cats.

Gee is having her best start to a season so far, Prespakis is gold, when Moody has the confidence to tap to a team target we look far far better than those long punches.

Glad you mentioned Moody. Loved her work... that chase down tackle was a beaut.

As I've openly stated previously, GG is my personal fave. Ripper footballer with a heart as big as Texas.

You're spot (pun?) on, Spotted One re when we got our mojo going we really looked impressive. Particularly our defense and midfield... forward line needs work to capitalize better on opportunities.

Re Gee...
She has probably been my favourite player for a while now. She was the first player my son could recognise (Male or female). I describe her to people who dont know the womens game as female Eddie. Love watching her play.

That being said, she has the scope to do so much more. She can turn a game in 5 minutes or go missing for 20.
We need to utilise her skill set more. Get her in space and let her use her foot skills, they are elite. Her acceleration and agility are also big strengths.
She hates people pointing out how small she is, but its hard to ignore on some of the tackles she made when opponents just stood up and basically ignored the fact they were being tackled. Great tenacity, but needs to be outside not inside for maximum impact.

The new girl Good is a terrific overhead mark, reasonable 2nd ruck, but otherwise has few AFLW level skills.

The F50 is a work in progress, even though the bulk of them are foundation players those 2 or 3 newbies really change the dynamic, it's going to take some time, I hope Harf keeps plenty of protection around Gee, Jones, etc., etc., because they are going to be targeted by opposition. I thought Darcy pretty much sacrificed her game last night for the benefit of the others.

Amazing how powerful Prespakis is relative to the other girls, when teams are kept to fair tactics by the umpiring she is almost unstoppable.
