The best Bond of the lot. Old school suave, when actors were actors.

Can't recall a bad performance, regardless of character

That’s because every character he played was Sean Connery! He was a character on and off the screen.

One of the obits said one reason he got out of Bond films was because they were getting him to do more dangerous stunts, such as swimming with sharks. Apparently in 1 scene where he was strapped to a table with a laser beam slowly cutting through the table as it headed towards his family jewels, they didn’t have any suitable special effects. Instead, they had a guy with an acetylene torch under the table cutting through it, only stopping a few centimetres away from his most cherished possessions! I’d imagine no acting was required in that scene.

Probably, always will be, although Craig has won we over with a return to a more grittier Bond and less of the suave. I think of the alternatives it's likely Craig would be the only one that Connery would approve of!

In terms of suave classic Bond I agree Connery was the best, he created the aura of the character and set the standard for the others to follow.

Yep. I used to be an avid reader of the Bond books and I always had the mental picture of Connery.

A sad loss!

One of my favourite Sean Connery films was “The Hill” and I really liked his role in “The Longest Day”.  I think that he just played himself in that role.

RIP

I was the same Cookie, I dont mind Daniel Craig once you give it a chance, Connery is numero uno though.

Craig lacks the stature and suave but nails the action stuff IMHO.. Bit of mission impossible about the later Bond movies which doesn't appeal as much to me..

Perhaps, Brosnan was carp, didnt like Roger Moore either. Anyway, Connery was so much more than just Bond, what he crammed  into  90 years would equate to 270 of ours I'd imagine.

My personal preference would be Connery, then Brosnan before Craig/Moore etc.

Brosnan bought the suave nature that i always liked from Connery.
Craig is just an action star and i can't watch the later ones. I did like Casino Royale remake though.

BTW, surprised nobody has brought up Indiana Jones and the last crusade. Loved that movie as a kid and thought Connery was so good in it. Both watching it as a kid, and now.

Of course the untouchables is worth a mention too.

The lines in Gold finger originally went:

Hi,  I'm Pussy Galore

Of course you are...but your name is?

Even Connery couldnt get away with that one.

Loved him in Highlander.
The Hunt for Red October wasn't his finest but you're allowed a stinker or two I guess.

And as if on cue, Ch 9 are running a Bond Special every Monday beginning with Craig's Casino Royale (programmed before the Great Man passed away). Sometimes planets align in a strange and often psychic way.
