Melbourne are looking better this year, but they are also looking quite inconsistent. Unfortunately they do not have as many injuries as we do. :(
The way Melbourne won yesterday does not fill me with comfort: they were pretty good.
If we had something like a full list to select from I would go into the game with a lot of confidence. However, with the injuries we have, it will be difficult.
Gawn is one of the best rucks in the game who usually beats Kreuzer. It will be interesting to see if Phillips returns.
Look out Melbourne.
Back to Back...!!
If Ed is given a rest, I'd be tempted to bring in Cam Polson and give him a run with role. He's been a tackling machine in the 2s and has endurance.

Fair call, might get a education playing on Viney who is due back for the Dees...I'd expect Bugg to come in as well and play on Simpson in a Lamb like role....
Both Curnows got off with a $1000 fine.
Free to play against the Dees.
Betcha they are worried now.
We'll smash em I reckon.
Murphy and Marchbank ins?
What is the latest with Marchbank? I gather he didn't play 2s last weekend?
Kennedy? Foot/ankle must be ok if he can rack up 30 possessions?
According to todays club injury propaganda Marchbank has some bone bruising on his ankle and won't play this week but should be back the following week. Murphy and Williamson both a chance to play this week, will have tests later in the week

Willo straight in? Surely he will come back through the 2s? If he comes straight in, that says a hell of a lot.

Prefer if they all come back via the twos...season is over for us, we dont need half fit players rushed back...Marchbank looked unfit when he last played coming back from injury and Kennedy has been banged up all season....get them fit and firing in the NB's first IMO..
Love to see Williamson in but after a bad back I'd be easing him into the team slowly....

I watched the injury update, Macca says he will play VFL if he passes the tests.

We can't lose sight of the fact that 'our win' was against an ordinary side in poor form. The Snow Chalets are a good side in very good form. Realistically, they won't let us get away with some of the things we did against cheats.com.au ...gulp...
Do we get extra time to select a team given that the AFL have ginned us around today?

Would give Shaw a run for Mullett.
The 4th a raffle - no place for Kerr with Charlie and Harry up there....Jack? Maybe as a goal kicking mid?
Or keep Graham in - who'd been very serviceable...

Think the coach likes Mullett ....Graham probably deserves another game but I think is the most vulnerable and probably JackS the one to take his palce...

Basically I reckon In Murphy Out Ed Curnow. At a pinch, Weiters might come in for OShea.
I would like to see Jack tried as a coalface mid supporting Cripps. Good chance to test him out in that role at senior level. Not sure he's got the tank yet to go the whole game in that role so would have to rotate somewhere else, say spells forward. Be a shame to drop any from last week but maybe one in addition to Ed will be unlucky?
We will miss Ed's negating talents and for this reason I think Shaw may get a gig to replace him.

I think Kerridge can do a similar role if need be.

Very true GTC - I forgot about Kerridge. He could definitely take that role.
Hard to see too many changes apart from Murph then. Possibly one more?

Kerridge, like Ed, is an aerobic beast. I think Ed does the role better because he can negate and win his own ball. Sam is the next best thing IMO.

I don't like that Kreuzer has no back-up against one of the best rucks going around. We were well beaten in the taps last week, even though Kreuzer put in a great effort in getting clearances and such. That really needed addressing and we haven't.

I'd like to see Shaw get a run, he's been OK for a few weeks now.
He gives us a couple of options in Ed's absence and helps with our medium/small leg speed.
Sunday is going to be wet, I can't see Kerr coming unless McKay is out.
Not sure why Wright would be listed on the bench unless he's suffering from that head knock.
It might be time to give O'Shea or Plowman a rest, Rowe has had two ordinary weeks and I'd be keen to see SoJ tag Hogan, but given Gawn presses hard forward they may keep Rowe but I think Jones and Weitering are better match ups for the Demons forward setup. Given the history you'd think Rowe wants to play this one though.
If the weather was dry I'd go tall against the Dees, they are one of the lowest marking / kicking sides but high handball so they obviously run the ball a lot. If you force them to kick and then mark the ball they won't get hold of it.

I thought he was quite good against the Bombers.
SOJ would get destroyed by Hogan.
Bigger, stronger and faster!

Rowe or Jones has to play on Hogan...Weitering would get slaughtered IMO.. Melbourne as listed are not a big forward line and more mobile, we dont need anymore slow players down back...
Hogan would monster Jack IMO...
Agree on Shaw.....Melbourne are a mobile team and he would be handy......I'd expect Lewis, Viney to go the knuckle on Cripps at every opportunity too.......Vince will probably do a Lamb on Murphy as well.
I would have played the extra ruckman vs Gawn too....
If Jack plays I want to see him start his move towards a midfield role. I don't think we need him in defence.
I thought he was quite good against the Bombers.
The Bombers were rubbish Thry, and Rowe was the least influential of any defender against a rubbish side, and never really gave us control of the footy which I think is key to his role.
One of our KPDs needs to be marking the football or else the Demons mobile medium / small forward line will have a feast. They run with a three way forward/midfield rotation using Petracca, Hogan and Oliver, they will add a fourth to that this week with Viney.
SOJ would get destroyed by Hogan.
Bigger, stronger and faster!
Hogan's hardly played forward for the last four weeks, and nobody would suggest SoJ stand Hogan inside D50, Jones is our best option for Hogan because the Dees will almost certainly have Hogan working up the field leaving McDonald inside F50.
Well I'm afraid if young SoJ he wants to play mid then Hogan is the sort of player he needs to go head to head against. Name some other more suitable midfield opponent, Blicsav, Fyfe, Kennedy, just about all the other options are either faster or more mobile! There is not that much difference in size and speed, Hogan has recently worked a lot inside like Cripps leaving Oliver and Petracca on the outside.
We cannot leave Cripps one out against Petracca, Hogan, Oliver with only support from lightweight smalls like Murphy, O'Brian, Fisher or Dow. To win this game we must win the midfield because our HB line is far slower than the Dees forward line, we won't be running off them if we are unable to mark!
This week, after the Clarko whinge, you can expect umpires to be red-hot on blocking, so attempts to double up defenders on guys like Hogan or Charlie will be penalised.
If Jack plays I want to see him start his move towards a midfield role. I don't think we need him in defence.
Agree...., although I think Jack might find the Dees mids a handful...be interesting to stick him on Lewis who isnt quick and see
if Jack can handle him because you know Lewis is going to get nasty if it aint going his way...
Maybe Viney returning will change the Dees game plan, but most of the comments posted assume Hogan is forward and that has not been the case this season. If Hogan camps inside F50 that will be the first time this season it has happened, even when he has been forward he has been more CHF than FF.
Harmes has been playing as a small leading FF in behind Hogan, a game plan very similar to the way Wet Toast use LeCras in behind Kennedy.
Of course McDonald has returned as well, so added to Viney the team balance has changed for the Dees. But Hogan up the field is working so well I doubt they would change it, Hogan's having his best season ever by some margin and it's not about playing F50!

Tapouts i'm not interested in. We won the clearances and he was brilliant around the ground. Gawn has won the tapout counts easily at times but for Melbourne to be thrashed in the clearances. Gawn's strength is around the ground too. GWS lost the tapout count 47-4 against Brisbane but won the clearances by 20.
Got much more important things to address.

Yes tapouts are a rubbish stat if they are not clearly to advantage and most are not. Jacobs is a great example of this, he can rack up 40 or 50 taps and barely have a noticeable effect, but have him take a dozen marks around the ground and he is a match winner.
Kreuizer can ruck solo provided nothing happens to Cripps, and we do have Jones who most of us would like to see get an AFL run in the ruck, not just a minute or two at the end of games.
SOJ would get destroyed by Hogan.
Bigger, stronger and faster!
Dont know about that.

An absolute dumbass statement but par for that particular course.
I guess as far as team selection is concerned, one forced change is fair enough imo.

It means that in a week where Flogland has paraded in front of us the best it has to offer, we finally have a winner, someone who is unlikely to be surpassed for years.
I assume this is from his "sliding doors" article? All that does is use up space and ink - it serves no other purpose. I would assume these articles are meant to be humorous.
Ignore, disregard, rip it up (covers most of the "journalism" these days)

Yes it is from Sliding Doors. A stupid concept if ever there was one.

Stupid lame ar$e board, thanks for nuthin'.

So after all the umpire saga he doesn't play anyway. Cant take a trick!

Very interesting. Wonder if that is a genuine injury concern or whether other behind the scenes machinations were at work? Not paranoid or anything - it's just that everybody's out to get us! :)
Good luck to Kerr... seems to have worked his way into selection contention.
We have matched up well against Melbourne in recent years, but i can't see us getting close to them. They are good at beating up the lower placed teams.

I'm going along with fairly low expectations this week. We may be able to psych them out of it - outside chance only.
PS. Good luck and congrats to young Kerr - looking forward to seeing you play seniors.

Great to see Kerr in, kid can play and I hope we persist with him.....he should have been played before IMO.
Tough game give Melb are strong in the midfield and have a bit of firepower up forward, as usual it all comes down to a couple of players ie Cripps, Kreuzer having great games for us, if either of them have an average day its probably going to get ugly.
I reckon Kerr is one of those blokes whom if you don't respect he'll kick goals on you. Like all good forwards he makes chances count. I also wouldn't want to stand in the hole when the ball is coming in.

Agree...good supply might be the issue and of course the modern game requires forwards to defend to some extent but he has the tools to hurt other teams and is the only genuine FF we have had since Fev...
Went to open training this morning. Very light session obviously given we play tomorrow. No Curnows in sight (only found out later Charlie has done his quad, and they probably gave Ed a couple of days R&R after a pretty torrid week). Most striking was the mood of the players, they were up and about, lots of smiles and pats on the back, plenty of talk, they really got around their mates when they did something good, I got the feeling they are pretty tight as a group. Cripps led them out and trained at a higher level of intensity than everyone else (except maybe O'Brien), was first in every time Bolton blew the whistle, even if there were 10 blokes closer when the whistle went. Matt Wright was in street clothes and didn't do anything, McKay and Lamb didn't participate in any drills, but had a few set shots at the end. Lamb in particular looked sore. Murphy moved well, but didn't get out of second gear (like most of his teammates). Pat Kerr was up and about (I only found out later he'd just been told he was playing), his set shot goal kicking was outstanding
Thanks for that Jack
Wright in doubt...or just managed?
We'll see tomorrow.
Not sure, but Matt Shaw trained with them, If Wright is out it will be Shaw in
If Wright's out I'd prefer Jack Silvagni...but we'll see. ;)

Shouldn't post after the first can of that 10% Woodstock. ;) ;D
Congrats to Kerr, he is one we have been looking to see for a while, would have preferred to have edged him in in more of a support role extra bigger bodies around him eg Levi, but, this the cards dealt.

i haven't seen Kerr in action at all yet - very much looking fwd to seeing him play. No Charlie, and no Levi - it will be a good test for him.

With abit of luck, Melb havent seen him play either and we can get an advantage based on unknown factor. Good luck young man, grab your chance and make your family proud.
Does this mean our tall forward set up will consist of: teenagers with combined AFL experience of <10 games?
If so the challenge is a mighty one. If Wright doesn't play it becomes even mightier.
Good luck to the youngsters. Show us what you've got. Hopefully you'll spring a few surprises on the Dees.
