Robert Heatley Stand / Re: AFL Rd 9 2024 Pre Game Prognostications Carlton vs Melbourne

I don't really get the criticism of Lewis Young.  He might provide a few heart in mouth moments but I thought that he defended very well against Collingwood and did the job on Cox and Cameron when they went forward.

Only two of Young's eight marks were contested but he led the way for us with nine 1%ers and only Nic Newman had more intercepts.  On top of that, he only had one turnover for the game, not bad for a "panic merchant".

I imagine that Weitering will take Van Rooyen and we'll need another tall KPD to go with Petty and Gawn when he goes forward.

I wouldn't play Kemp on Fritsch.  Fritsch is too elusive and would exploit Kemp when he provides the extra at marking contests.
I reckon Weitering will have to take Petty given the latter is a lot bigger than Kemp or McGovern....a player who has given Melbourne a different look up forward is ex defender Turner who is 194cm. There might have been a case to keep Young in the team this week for the extra height. Petracca when resting forward will also need a minder and with Fritsch and Pickett also in attendance its going to be a busy night in defense if they get enough supply.
One of TDK or Pittonet might have to follow Gawn down forward if and when he plays there....

AFL Rd 8:   Carlton vs Collingwood

Rating:      C+
We lost by a goal to last year’s premiers and probably should have won. Granted that we were nowhere near our best, but we led for most of the game. We weren’t dreadful. Still it was disappointing.

Votes:
[2]   Sam Walsh
[2]   Nic Newman
[2]   Harry McKay
[2]   Jacon Weitering
[2]   Blake Acres
[1.5]   George Hewett
[1.5]   Marc Pittonet
[1]   Tom de Koning
[1]   Alex Cincotta
[0.5]   Matthew Owies
[0.5]   Patrick Cripps

Explanations:
[2]   Sam Walsh:      33 possessions and 8 clearances suggested Walsh was pretty good. Pity about the last 90 seconds.
[2]   Nic Newman:      32 possessions and 6 tackles, and more metres gained than anyone else, but he was a little fumbly and not at his best.
[2]   Harry McKay:      Dominated and kicked 4. Pity his last attempted pass was to nobody.
[2]   Jacon Weitering:   Close to BOG. Slaughtered his opponent.
[2]   Blake Acres:      32 possessions and a magnificent last quarter, but was fumbly before that.
[1.5]   George Hewett:   A solid job in the middle. 30 possessions, 5 tackles and 6 clearances.
[1.5]   Marc Pittonet:      Brilliant early and was the best ruck on the park.
[1]   Tom de Koning:   Tom’s game as a forward was actually pretty good. He was the worst ruck on the ground by some margin, but he did get a fair bit of ball. Too many fumbles up the ground. This vote is just for his forward play.
[1]   Alex Cincotta:      Did a job and did it brilliantly.
[0.5]   Matthew Owies:   3 goals was great.
[0.5]   Patrick Cripps:      Tactics holding Cripps out of it were questionable, but Cripps was really good early and tried his guts out all night.

Honourable Mentions:
Elijah Hollands:      Not a bad job.
Adam Cerra:         Solid in the middle, but lacked the flair he often has.

WIth no Doc/JSOS available, this is almost our best 23 with probably Motlop and Fogarty as the only ones to come in....and maybe Williams if in form. If Marchbank could stay on the park I could see him being the second key defender.

On paper, both teams look very evenly matched. We've probably got the two better key forwards, but they've got arguably the best key defender combo in the game. Midfields are probably pretty even although Gawn probably gives them a slight edge...but we have two ruckmen compared to Gawn and Van Rooyen as backup.

Voting is as usual: you have 15 votes to award pretty much as you will, with the following provisos:
[1] 15 votes in total, no more, no less.
[2] No more than 10 votes for any one player (even Sam Walsh or Patrick Cripps)
[3] Three players at least must get a mention.
[4] A grade for the game, A+ (what I want to see) to F-.

AFL 2024 Rd 7:   Carlton vs Geelong
I am really disappointed to have lost this one. We did so much right, yet our mistakes cost us the game. Geelong were very much up against us, but we should have been too.

Trends:
[1]   There were 15 voters this round, which is not that bad considering we lost. I'd love it if more people gave their opinions, but I'll take what I can get. Thank you to everyone who took the time to vote. Believe me, it is appreciated.

[2]   The rating was a 8.16, which is just higher than a C. Pity we couldn't reproduce last week's effort, but we may have been a little harsh, considering who was available.

[3]   12 players managed a mention this week, which is just two less than last week. Again, it suggests that a lot of players made a contribution. It was the mistakes that killed us.

[4]   The average vote this week was 24, which equals our yearly low. It does tell how we feel our players fared.

[5]   6 players managed 100 votes or more this week. This is very good, but it does suggest that more could have been done by the others.

[6]   Patrick Cripps managed 315 votes to be BOG this week. Behind him things were quite close between Walsh, Weitering and Pittonet.

[7]   Two player managed votes from everyone this week. Pittonet missed from one voter, as did Weitering.

[8]   Elijah Hollands was probably the youngster who stood out, followed by Jordan Boyd.

[9]   Our midfield totally dominated the voting. Only one forward (H) and one defender (Weitering) really stood out.

Votes:
Cripps, Patrick   315
Walsh, Sam   196
Weitering, Jacob  185
Pittonet, Marc   174
Acres, Blake   109
McKay, Harrison  103
Kennedy, Matthew  63
Hewett, George   38
Hollands, Elijah  19

Boyd, Jordan   8
Newman, Nicholas  5

Progressive Voting:

Harry McKay 1015
Sam Walsh 980
Tom de Koning 784
George Hewett 678
Jacob Weitering 599
Charlie Curnow 522
