Robert Heatley Stand / Re: 2024 Practice Match Carlton vs Melbourne
What possible benefits can there be for players having to play in such stressful conditions?

Surely there has to be a cutoff temperature to protect the  players.

If the AFL is comfortable with a projected temperature of 37 degrees, what is the temperature where it will say that protection of the players' health is paramount?

I read the other day that in the USA the mother and father of a fifteen-year-old have each been charged with involuntary manslaughter. Their son was responsible for the deaths by shooting of a number of children at a school.

Here in Australia, whenever youths offend, blame for their offending is always laid at the feet of the government of the day and/or the courts.  We get the obligatory hand-wringing, calls for more money to be spent, and for the age to be raised to fourteen before a person can be charged with an offence.

The Victorian Chief Commissioner of Police said yesterday that there is a hardcore of approximately 220 youth offenders known to police who account for the majority of serious youth crimes in this state.

Surely it is about time that the parents of repeat offenders should be held accountable, at least in part, for the actions of their children.

I am tired of society expecting governments of the day and the courts  to clear up the mess, come up with solutions, and yet parents are absolved of any responsibility for the behaviour of their children

Blah-Blah Bar / Re: The classic/fave car thread
I've just read the posts in this thread and my wife and I got to thinking about one of the first cars we owned.

Back in the early '60s I bought a one owner 1951 Fiat Topolino 500.  It had a 4 cylinder,  550 cc water cooled motor mounted in the front and driving the back wheels. From memory it developed about 15 bhp.  With a strong tailwind and going down hill it  could reach about 50 mph.  It had a 4-speed gear box with synchro on third and fourth. The fuel tank was in the front in a similar position to the VW Beetle.  It had a long gear lever which screwed into an aluminium housing on top of the gearbox.  By the time I bought the car the thread had stripped and gravity was relied upon to keep the lever in the housing.

Being young and foolish we used it to go for a holiday in Surfers.  We went via the Newell Highway and I remember it took us 24 hours to reach Dubbo.  I've never had a car since that has attracted so much attention.  Along the way no one had ever seen this model Fiat.  Petrol attendants (they had them in those days) just used to look at it and shake their heads.

By the time we got back we were in need of another holiday.  That was the most exhausting trip we have made.

The car that I really want from that era, but can't afford,  is the Valiant Charger R/T E 49 with the straight six, triple Webers and 4 speed manual gearbox.

Pity Dan isnt around to explain his illegal tax, Adam Bandt warning the Albanese Govt not to try and impose a national Tax is about the best thing he has done since entering politics although Im sure Albo and his State Labor stooges will try and get the lost revenue back with some other underhanded suedo EV tax like jacking up Rego's of old gas guzzlers etc...

So with no State tax and Bandt threatening to vote down a Federal tax, how will EV owners be made to contribute their  fair share of revenue to cover road maintenance and repairs?  Keep in mind that any EV weighs approx 200kg more than an equivalent ICE vehicle.

Robert Heatley Stand / Re: Who stood up?
Yes, it seems a lot of people take my Owies / Motlop mistake comments as bashing Motlop, but it's not about Motlop being poor, it's about what Owies brings that Motlop doesn't, and Charlie and Harry suffer because of it.

The tell was early in the game when we were dominating, and Motlop and Martin were flying against Harry and Charlie instead of crumbing. Owies would have either been front and square, or drawing a defender away from the contest, not taking them to it!

LP. it raises the question: why were they flying for the mark against Harry and Charlie?  In the early matches of a season it is perhaps understandable, but at the end of the season it's just not on.  When it happened yesterday it looked as though Motlop and Martin had no idea of their roles on the forward line, hence my remark in an earlier posting about the lack of direction from the forward coach.

Robert Heatley Stand / Re: AFL 2023 Preliminary Final Carlton vs Brisbane Post Game Prognostications
To have a realistic chance at being in the top 2 next year changes have to be made to the forward line personnel, beginning with the forwards coach.  As has already been mentioned, how were Motlop and Martin allowed to compete for marks with Charlie  resulting in their opponents clearing the ball out of our forward line with no opposition?

I see Owies, Durdin and Fogarty as being hard at the ball but too easily covered and not having the skills to impact a game.

I am most disappointed with Cuningham.  He has shown he has the skills to carve up a defence but once again has gone missing after a few cameo performances.

Also what is not discussed is the cost of a replacement battery for an EV.  A few weeks ago a Porsche Taycan owner in England was concerned he had damaged the underside covering of the battery and queried the price of a replacement battery.

The Porsche dealership quoted him 30,000 pounds sterling!

Robert Heatley Stand / Re: AFL Elimination Final 1 Post Game Prognostications Carlton vs Sydney
Tonight was one of those almost games from H. he got his hands on the ball a lot, but didn't quite pull in the marks. His kicking at goal was diabolical. But his size and strength were creating problems for Sydney. When he went off, we lacked a tall target: when Charlie led out, there was no other timber to kick to. It allowed Sydney to make a lot of turnovers in our forward 50.
I am sure that he would have been a lot better next week, but for his concussion. Losing him is going to cause a number of structural issues for us in the forward half.
Option 1 is Jack Silvagni, but how fit he is remains the issue.
Option 2 is moving Kemp forward and bringing up either Young or Sam Durdin. Durdin's body strength would have been handy at times, as the Sydney tall forwards took some clutch marks after half time.
I like the way Kemp is developing in defence, but we are short of guys who can replace H. Lemmey is a long way off, and he is the only other one who plays that role.
Option 3: Play Matthew Kennedy forward. He can take a decent grab and has depth in his kicking.

I'm not sure I like any of our choices, but I can't think of anything else.

I don't share your optimism that Harry would be better next week if he were able to play.

Leaving aside that in the Swan's match he was once again a motivation killer, the fact is that since his return to the side we have gone back to the same old predictable approach of entry into the forward line, namely, coming around the flanks and kicking long to the forward line.

During the time he was out injured our plan of attack was quite different - bringing the ball through the centre corridor as quickly as possible, denying the opposition backmen the chance to settle, and allowing our small forwards freedom of movement.

If he is not available for selection against Melbourne, I hope we return to the plan which has brought us success.

The player who concerns me most is Harry.

His game against GWS was well below par, no doubt caused by the lack of match practice.  Given that he is still lacking match practice, why should we assume that he will be able to rise to the pressures of a finals game?

If he isn't able to do so and puts in a similar performance he will be a weak link that Sydney will be happy to exploit.

Robert Heatley Stand / Re: AFL Elimination Final 1 Pre Game Prognostications Carlton vs Sydney
I am concerned that Harry's return isn't an automatic bonus for the forward line.

When Harry was out injured our midfield and small forwards seemed to be released from the predictable entry into the forward line of looking for either Harry or Charlie who nearly always led to the flanks.  Instead, players went straight down the middle and were prepared to kick for goal from within the fifty metre arc, putting immediate pressure on the opposition defence.  Our goals to points scored ratio improved and there was an immediate lift in the performances of Fogarty, Motlop, Martin and Owies.

As an example, in the Collingwood match Cincotta took a mark on the fifty metre arc, just went back and kicked a goal instead of trying to short pass.

My concern is that Harry's return will make it easier for the opposition defence if we return to the predictable method of entry into the forward line.

Robert Heatley Stand / Re: AFL Rd 22 2023 Post Game Prognostications Carlton vs Melbourne
Over the past seasons I have been critical of Carlton for using pick 3 to select Dow.  But on his recent performances he has finally arrived and I would hate to see him running around next year in another team's jumper.

I know that when we have a full list available there is not room for him in the midfield, but given the hard tackling, high pressure game we now play what is the likelihood of ever having an injury free list?

In no particular order these are what I see as his main attributes:
 He is only 23
He has developed physically into a very solid unit
He is not injury prone
His kicking skills are now at an acceptable level
He is hard at the ball and helps to take the pressure off Cripps.

I believe he has shown enough to be offered a contract.
