Title: Foxtel Problem
Post by: Gozza on December 17, 2013, 10:25:14 pm
Only known for a few minutes and I'm going insane. Fair certain the Foxtel unit has blown up and it doesn't work any more. Has anyone else had this problem?

Saw a spark come from the powerboard before, thought nothing of it. Went to chuck the idiot box on before and low and behold, the Foxtel box has no power. Unplugged it and plugged it back in, turned the powerpoint off and back on again, and no luck. Perhaps it shorted or something.

What's it cost to get a bloke out to fix it? Do they do it for free? Or maybe I just send him out with a sixer of VB on his way out and we call it even?  ;D

Please help Gozza.  :(

I reckon you phone Foxtel and tell them to GTF down here and fix this $hit bitches. After all you are paying for the service. The box is their property and they are obliged to maintain your connection.

Gozza, have you checked that the power board is ok? That could have blown possibly, it has happened to me.

Just a thought! To be sure could be worth trying the fox box in another power outlet that you know is ok b4 you call in foxtel?
Good luck with it.

Get the Cable Guy! They should simply replace the box at no charge to you. And you may not have lost what you recorded as I think your recorded programs are held on their stuff, not your box. :)

My son rang Foxtel the other day and told them he wanted to cancel due to not having much time to watch it plus the footy season is over. Next words that came of Foxtel's mouth was "would you like it for half price?"
Try that one on them Gozza ;)

Ringed them up before and they're sending a bloke out tomorrow. Might try the half price trick later.  ;D

And thank you everyone for the comforting words during such a time of crisis.

Foxtel should actually charge a monthly fee plus $xx per channel YOU want to watch

The problem (for us, the consumer) is that when you're the only show in town you can basically do what you like.
The problem (for them) is that any monopoly based on technology is built on sand.
They're only a "new method of entertainment delivery" invention away from irrelevance.

Ten years from now they wont be in the dominant position.
They'll either have competition for their product or will have to make huge changes to that product.
Whichever it is we'll be better off.

I only have it for the footy. The rest is either crap or easier to download off the net with no adds. Like Lods says they will become irrelevant when there is competition. Most likely internet TV.

Exactly. It's why Rupert is so against the NBN. It will kill Foxtel.

I've recently p1ssed off Foxtel, especially with footy being over for now.

I was paying $100+ per month and it was very hard to find anything we both wanted to watch apart from the footy - just not worth the money. Final straw was when I had to watch the GF on Ch7 anyway. I'll live without it and can get better movie options elsewhere anyway.

I got the impression from speaking to the Customer Service Officer that a lot of people are giving it up.

What's this newfangled Foxtel television Gozza?

I ask because my Astor television receiver suddenly stopped working.  It used to get all the channels - 2, 7, 9 and 0 - but the picture on 0 was always a little fuzzy.  I think the problem has something to do with digitalization or analogarithms.

Someone suggested that I try setting the receiver on top of a box but that didn't work  :-\

I take out a yearly subscription through AFL app, total cost being about $90 per year, I also purchased an apple tv unit for about $100. as a result I get to watch any and all AFL match's whenever i like including all live matches through fox footy. I stream the official live telecasts straight through to my LCD TV when at home or watch them live whenever I'm away either on IPAD or iPhone. Total cost this year was under $200. Next year total cost will be around $90

Sounds good DU. I will look into that approach for sure. My wife has a WiFi Ipad (I'm a PC guy myself) so I will try iy out omn that first. You say that the Apple TV will stream matches directly from the net also?

Yes Cookie

the apple TV acts like your pay tv receiver box. It connects to your Television and your wifi signal (if you have a standard wireless router) transfers streams through the apple tv. I purchase a yearly subscription of the AFL app for under $90. Alternatively you can purchase months at around $15 per month. The end result is that i get to watch all live fox footy telecasts as well as access to every match replay 365 days per year. Great thing about it is I also get to stream other programs straight from net through to my Television, including documentaries from youtube etc. I received the Apple tv box as a gift but they retail for around $100. You might need to ensure you have adequate data allowance, however if your with telstra the AFL streaming is unmetered and doesn't effect your data allowance

If it is the box that has blown up they should replace it for free.

Also tell them that you were without foxtel for a few days...a week and they will credit your account too.

I had a box crap itself on me. Lost all my saved stuff. Replaced it for free, with a box with a bigger hard drive, and credited me a weeks worth for the down time.

You could load directly without iPhone or iPad if you wish as it has remote control which enables you to control directly or you can control via iPhone or iPad using them as remote controllers. However for the afl telecasts the  afl app might require access through either an iPhone or an iPad as I don't think it's possible to load the app via Apple TV interface. If you already have an iPhone or iPad then you'd be ready to go.

i loved foxtel, recently moved and cancelled the bundle as it was too hard (and its not footy season)
I only watched history, Nat Geo, discovery etc . cant do commercial TV anymore, but in saying that, so much Nazi stuff on history, I was beginning to speak german, and started memorizing the names of the 3rd Reich!

Yep, there are some hidden gems of programs on Foxtel but you are so right... this fixation with Hitler and war is incredibly - just means there must be a huge market for folks wanting to watch this horrible stuff.

COAST is our favourite show at present... learning heaps about our coastline and cultural and historical things I didn't know! The Great Barrier Reef episode was a real eye opening.

I blame Goebbels ;)

I guess the thing is there was an enormous amount of footage taken during the rise of the National Socialists leading into the Second World War.
No event since would have generated that level of 'prolific' film coverage....except maybe a Royal Wedding ;D
It's easy to combine that stuff into a doco rather than recreate your ancient Romes and Egypts.

Vietnam and the Gulf War(s) documentaries would probably rank next after WW2 on that channel

Yep. Can't watch it when Mrs Baggers is about though - scares her too much.

That episode where they ran out of petrol and the pilot glided the big bird to that abandoned airfield... until they got closer and saw all these folks/kids on it, was a beaut. Glad that most of the shows are based on problems, broadly speaking, in the 10-30 years ago category!

OMG same here. It's strictly non-fatal accidents when she's watching but she can't even handle them now.

Was that the one where he decided he needed to 'slip it'? And he came in at that angle and then straightened in the final seconds and aced it? They were drag racing on the old air strip. Amazing.

There is a good reason why I like to sit at the pointy end, have you seen some of the survivors?

If you survived a major crash it would be like falling through a "Person Blending Furnace" and coming out the other without a fatal injury. But the mental damage would be catastrophic!

I talked to a survivor at an air show once, he had massive health problems that they eventually cured him of. It seems he had a fragment of bone floating around internally that wasn't his!

So it is the pointy end for me, if it is going to hit I don't want to remember it! For that matter, I do my best not to remember the airports either!

Thanks for all your input on this DU, much appreciated. BTW, I've now got the AFL app on my wife's Ipad OK. Need now to get an ethernet cable run near to the TV so I can get an Apple TV eventually. Thry, you're right in one way, but as you say, cable is still better for video. WiFi works OK for everything else but I am thinking of getter a range extender as we have a couple of signal "dead spots" in our house.
