Not having anywhere your knowledge on the gals, Mr K., how do you think we went re the four young women we chose?
Full disclosure, I don't know much about the girls apart from what I've read and highlights ive seen.

Having said that, I know what an aflw player looks like and how they compare. The way they run, handle the ball, kick and all that.
I also know what type of players we need.
Best I can tell, the 2 don't line up.

We have had at least 2 AA defenders and another couple that would be pretty close. We also have another handful of girls who can cover for injuries.  We do not need any more defenders. We recruited 2.

Now maybe Annie Lee is the best defender and/or best player available at our first pick.....fair enough. Some you can't pass on.
But why take another.....especially one wh can't kick?

So maybe we move one of our new defenders to the midfield....but why not recruit pure midfielders?? Some who don't have a horrible kicking action. These girls look adequate for the first season of aflw....but we are so far advanced of that now that they don't look up to scratch. They must have some elite ability I havnt seen yet because otherwise I don't get it.

I like Imogen Milford.
Fills a need. Might lack consistency, but with a bit of luck she can slot straight into the side. Doesn't have to be the main target, leave that to Vescio and Stevens. Harris replacement.

Personally I wouldve liked 3 mids, 1 forward and a ruck
We got 2 defenders, 1 mid and a forward.....with 1 spot still available.

Id give them a 4 out of 10 for our draft haul.
I think the media gave us 2.5 out of 10 for our trade period.

I don't claim any level of expertise or knowledge of the draft pool, albeit I follow the female leagues as best I can but with involvement a Div 3 local ladies team, following the AFLW and VFLW to a lesser extent, trying to catch the elite level youth girls can be a bit of a challenge.  That said I will be so bold as to express  some personal views which run counter to the above.  First I agree wholeheartedly with Krud's views of our needs, indeed Munro's pre draft comments seemed to reflect the same, subject to an overarching "best available" mantra which is fair enough especially early.  Accordingly my wish list would have been 3 mids, a tall forward and a ruck preferably capable of at least resting forward.  First up we go a classy intercept defender who also uses the ball well out of defence - might not be needs related but can live with that on a best available basis if that is the club's jugment.  She is young and gets to learn from the best and eventually take over from them.  Fair enough, but not sure if she improves the team for next year.  Second we stretch for a brilliantly athletic mid who Krud it appears - and many others - would say has kicking issues.  I agree her technique looks crap but in my viewings, and I may have missed her horror days for all I know, she can and does kick the ball well when afforded time and space, it is when she is under pressure that Sherar tends to kick poorly.  More a cade of kicking consistency than being a poor kick per se.  That can be worked on and if it is eradicated then we have good one.  But I get why there are concerns and I acknowledge the inherent big "if".  Next Vernon.  This is the one where I starkly disagree with Krud.  First she is not a defender she is a true utility albeit palying mainly down back but also serious wing time and doing it well.  Second I cannot have it that she is a poor kick.  Again maybe I missed her bad days but on my viewings to the contrary disposal is one of her strong suits.  Munro and the club certainly see it that way.  I like the pick.  Finally we get our KF and a good pick up in Milford.  Still young and improving but with some experience and runs on the board, ready to slot in day 1 and this is a player who may well improve the team from the get go.  That is the concern I have with our selections, maybe we are looking more to the future, but who improves the team for 2022?

The other area where I will deign to disgree with Krud is in relation to our passing on the last pick.  I understand the point about waiting and seeing who produces what in the rest of the season before commiting to our last choice and probably would generally agree with it if either the cupboard was bare or stocked with options all on much the same level.  But let's suppose you decided to go panning for gold and on your way to the river you trip over something half buried on the path.  You look to see what tripped you up and low and behold it's a massive gold nugget.  Now I ask you, do you leave it there and carry on down to the river?
That gold nugget's name is Talia Gillard and I am a massive fan.  Genuinely tall (190cm) ruck that I think could be anything.  I'd have taken her at the pointy end of the draft and couldn't believe she was still around when our last pick came up.  To have grabbed her would have made our draft to my mind and I am gutted we let her slip to the Dees a couple of picks later.  Again, obviously my view of her talents was not shared by anyone with the power to call (except maybe Melbourne who didn't come into the draft until the pick before and for all we know might have rated her atthe pointy end and been delighted she was there).  Clearly most of the experts didn't rate her near where I do and maybe they are right.  But  I'd have broken my neck to grab her.

Anyway, what is is what is and what is not is what is not as Parmenides liked to say and that is where the chips have fallen.  I am not dissppointed with our selections bar passing on Gillard but the question remains who makes us better in 2022?     And let's face it you need substantial improvement just to keep pace with the overall standard improving let alone to climb the ladder.

We signed free agent from Sturt in SA today: a ruck who is mates with Kerryn Harrington: Jessica Good
183 cm tall and a little older.
There is our ruck.

Imogen Milford, Paige Trudgeon and Serena Gobbs can fight it out for the marking key forward spot.

The others to replace Chloe Dalton, I guess.

No guarantee that Mimi Hill will be right to play for the season either.

I am a little happier than I was on Draft Night. It does look like we've addressed some of our areas of weakness from the 2021 season. Have we done enough? Have we chosen correctly? Far too early to tell. Our AFLW recruiting has generally been pretty good, but even a good bunch can make disastrous errors.

Yes, and going back to what someone was saying earlier, THIS is why you pass in the draft. You can pick up players from other states that you couldn't pick up on draft day.

....and SA is the place to take some talent. Adelaide have had the pick of the bunch for a long time. Time to start stealing some talent.

Jess is 185cm and 26 years old Crash, and looks to be very strong too.  I understand that she played with Adelaide Lightning alongside Kerryn Harrington so an elite sportswoman too.

I reckon that we've done alright with our list changes but time will tell.

An interesting take on our draft night.

With the understanding of why we took who we took, i'm a little happier than i was the other night. The recruitment of Jess Good also covers one of my biggest issues from that night.

Still have question marks over some kicking techniques, but at least i can see why the players were chosen. Lets see if they live up to those expectations.

Its nice to read that, but are they really going to come out and tell us we missed all our targets but did the best we could?  Probably not.

Why would Riley Beveridge massage the story?  He is an AFL media person paid to report things from an AFL perspective.  If our draft plans had gone down the gurgler, it would probably be of more interest to the AFL audience.

With the exception of Georgie Prespakis, who was never a realistic chance to slip through to our first pick, we got who we wanted.  The question now is whether our talent scouts, coach and list manager are on the money.  No excuses if they're not.
