Influenza

People are in fear of getting sacked for having a day off with a cold, so they turn up to work coughing and spluttering all over their associates.

Managers tell people to harden the feck up, Psychopath Managers but managers no doubt.

People are dying because it's just a cold, what world is it that we live in which values a few days of work ahead of a lifetime of health?

Obviously something close to you has happened.

I am long of the view to send employees home for them to get better - even in my role as a contractor, I send them home.

Much better to have 2 days in bed, get better and get back to the office, then struggle through and have something linger on for weeks.

Agree...as an employee you cant win.....stay home because you are sick and you are a bludger, come to work sick and you are irresponsible
for putting your workmates at risk....
My daughter is a nurse and if she calls into work sick on a night shift she gets crucified as there are usually no replacements....she was told she has to plan to be sick??

Yes, I have an account of an employee at a school being intimidated for taking time off with a cold, retrospectively it turns out it was just a cold, but at the time doctors thought to play it safe stay away from "The School".

It seems reasonable, but not to the psychopaths in charge, a cold is not a good enough excuse and they made it known.

Now it turns out that a 3rd party, who was blamed for initially bringing the cold virus into the school, has been diagnosed with full blown influenza and is in hospital. A school for feck sake, how many could be affected?

A person who sat on the train or bus next to someone, shared a table or seat at a cafe, tuck shop or school cafeteria, or preceded them into a cab or Uber? This person who was too intimidated to stay home when they were ill, because they felt insecure in their job, now they are in hospital having exposed an untold number of individuals including children to Influenza!

And forking hospitals should know better, she is obviously working for Typhoid Mary who never misses a day of work!

Its how they staff the wards....daughter is a RN(Div 1), they usually run one Div 1 who is in charge and the others are enrolled nurses(Div 2)....The Div 1 has all the responsibility including the meds as well as supervising the Div2's of which a lot are rookies with no experience. Add a nurse to patient ratio of 1-8 or 1-10 and its chaos most of the time...
If its really busy you might get another RN1 but hospitals hate paying for the extra specialist staff especially ED,ICU, and Cardiac nurses...so even with one nurse sick the whole show falls over and the care level goes down. The Typhoid Mary's(ward head admins) work day shifts and hide in the office...all they do is read all the handover notes and try and save money on staff....

That's the same situation as the school I referred to earlier, some bean-counting knob in the Admin block intimidating people(Mostly the single mother's who need the job) and risking people's health to save a dollar!

It's a dead set disgrace EB. I feel for your daughter. A 1st world country with such a lousy public hospital system. Successive governments of all persuasions need to be held to account.

Paul..Good thing is most of the nursing staff are committed to the job, each other and work as a team and provide the best care despite the system.....
Aus nurses are in demand due to their training and abilities, sick or not they usually dont let the patients down, problem is there is a high cost to pay with their mental health
and issues with addictions etc...

EB, my mother is 86 and has been in hospital a few times over the last couple of years. The nurses do a great job, but the strain they are under is obvious. And as I said earlier, it's a disgrace that our hospitals and health system in general have their funding slashed year after year. No excuse for such a thing in the supposed "lucky country."

And I bet the Health system give very little support to those nurses who need help with their issues.

Paul..System doesnt provide much support, the nurses support each other....when you find one of your workmates has overdosed in the toilet the system wants to cover that up not admit there is a problem.
Nurse Jackie the series wasnt dreamed up, the person who wrote that series had plenty of inside info on how it all operates....

Well said, Spotted One, EB1 and PP... in a just world nurses and teachers would be the highest paid and most respected of professions... (closely followed by those who don the navy blue... ;) )

Likewise, I've been outspoken publicly on this 'soldier on' cr@pola. And the victimisation of those who take time off to recover from illness, any illness.

I work public sector health.

I can attest that calling in sick is unreasonably strict, even for admin officers.

I heard a stat that people coming to work whilst sick actually cost more for the business in the long term than they do just by taking their allotted sick leave.

The shame in it, is that they ask far too many questions surrounding it, and then even put action plans into place to try and understand why you are taking sick leave (being sick isnt a valid excuse apparently).

The real shame in it, is that some people who get the treatment surrounding sick leave actually have a reason behind it, and it can be family illness (think the Big C) and they still get unreasonably questioned surrounding sick leave or carers leave.

Others who take one sick day in a blue moon are believed to be pulling a sickie.

Its a load of crap, and the onus is on the manager to explain his sick leave and state of play, not on the staff member to "get well".
