Title: 3rd test Australia v South Africa @ Cape Town
Post by: Juddkreuzer on March 02, 2014, 12:00:34 am
Great innings so far from Warner. Morne Morkel really serving it up to Clarke though with some brutal deliveries. Kudos to Clarke though for withstanding the barrage. Expect Morkel shall enjoy some special treatment from Mitch.

Not a bad start at 2 for 178 and Steyn off the field with a crook fetlock.

The batting line up looks better balanced with Watson coming in in the all rounder's no 6 spot.

It's a big gamble bringing in Pattinson for Siddle, particularly with the former's lack of cricket.  Let's hope he can stay on the park, let alone bowl with pace and control.

2/195 at tea with Steyn off with a Hammy. We are well placed early in the test. :)

But are we good enough to win it?? That's the $64m question !!

The Bats look like they'll do their bit so it's up to our attack to prove that this pitch is a bowlers dream.

The fact that the bats could do their bit though, probably means it is far from a bowler's dream.

if we make 475, 500+ we'll win.

Runs on the board count for a lot psychologically.....?

I wonder if the Poms watched Clarke last night? That is how you play, fierce, fast and chin high bowling, get behind the ball, drop your gloves and wear one for the team. Clarke skyrocketed in my eyes last night, this was almost a legendary innings. He just needs to convert it into a century and we need to win the test then the innings will go into folklore.

On the flip side how good was Morkel? Some of those ball were deadly, accurate and damn fast. Lets get a world side together, Morkel on at one end and Johnson at the other with the Indian cricket team batting at the WACA.  >:D

Excellent response. Boof is straightening up this bunch. Bet he read them the riot act after the soft effort from the batsmen in the last game.

I reckon M Clarke is about 8 runs and a match victory away from blowing the top off the 'Man Love' register!!!

This effort is everything you look for in a leader and more!

Warner, Clarke and Smith have helped Australia set this innings up. 4 for 434 is not a bad score at all. I wonder when we will declare and get at the Saffies as they did to Clarke. They better expect some return for their efforts.

We only need to draw to move to #2 in the test rankings so if I was Clarke I'd keep going.

It's nice to see our batsmen stand up after their insipid effort in the last test.

Let's hope the rain doesn't prevent a result from this test.

Reminiscent of the great man, one S Waugh... I reckon a batsman is better judged on his ability to make bad runs rather than good ones.

Clarke and Boof tend to always play for the win and that's what they should do here. Bugger playing for the draw when you have close enough to 500. Declare now and send them in.

Kudos for Warner for first innings runs and also to Clarke, for digging in and making a tough score instead of a pretty cameo.  The others also contributed, so good effort all round from the top six.

Agree....get them straight in and I think the wicket will play a bit quicker with more bounce.
Bit of luck they lost Steyn but we have had our share of injuries over the journey and deserve some luck.

David Warner would be nearly the form batter in the world.....

Be interested to see how Pattinson goes, will probably leak some runs but will get his share of wickets IMO and could be the man to break the Saffies...

God help the rest of the world if we ever get all of our quicks healthy at the same time. Can you imagine Johnson, Pattinson and Cummins all firing at once, would be magnificent to watch.

They are sideshow compared to Harris, Harris and Siddle are the reason we had the luxury to give Johnston one last chance which he took. But they are the rock solid foundation that lets the selectors take risks elsewhere.

You cannot have three scatter guns in one attack, you need some marksmen!

Great to watch but it ain't over yet, they bat right down to Abbott who has 1st class centuries.

Time for Lyon to repay the faithful.

Incorrect. Johnson was given one last chance at the Gabba because everyone else was injured. If any of Pattinson, Starc or Cummins was available he wouldn't have been picked. And Cummins isn't a scatter gun.

I wonder what target Clarke will set; 450 or will he give the bowlers a short burst before tea?

The South Africans can bat out the game but I don't think they can score quickly enough to chase down anything over 400.

Duminy's tactics are interesting; Warner can't score if he can't reach the ball  ::)

Post by: Mantis on March 04, 2014, 10:14:10 pm
I would be batting after lunch like there is no tomorrow. Give enough time in this session to be bowling for at least 40 to 45 mins. Giving the Aussies a chance to get 1 or 2 wickets over before the last session of the day. More than enough time to bowl them out if we field and bowl well. Enough batting time to be at around 485 runs or more (Even 500) as a target that they will struggle to reach. Keep the pressure on them to bat fast enough, or drag time out being too defensive then crowd the batsmen with fielders. Be aggressive and show intent. Just my view anyway. ;)

It's a credit to Boof for sure!

Went to bed when we had a 500 lead. Great stuff lads. Shame GSmith could not eek out a few more runs, a great player.

Just 6 wickets to go...

Still a big gap between us and SAF on the points table though.

Win here though and we can lay claim to being the world's best team.

Only place now we'd struggle is in India as they'd just doctor their wickets. We'd still lose 4-0 there. We play them here next summer though.

Agree....the points table doesnt to relate to the present IMO, we are the best team in the world with India the only unconquered territory as as you rightly pointed out and  that will remain so while they doctor their wickets to favour their spinners and nullify any genuine pace bowling.

Shame Smith went out of the game the way he did, probably should have pulled the plug when Kallis quit.

Good to see the back of de Villiers, but du Plessis is proving to be a thorn in the side. A draw would be catastrophic from where we started in this second innings of SA.

Mighty effort on that last day... especially from Harris.

Can't remember the last time I watched so much cricket when we're not playing in Oz. Still a couple of glaring weaknesses in terms of blokes who shouldn't be in the side but gee Boof is really getting some steel and character into this side. And Michael Clarke continues to grow as a Skipper.

Congratulations to both Australia and Sth Africa for a series of high quality, proper Test cricket.  Should have been live to air but that's another topic.

Like the Australian way - prepared to lose in an attempt to win (i.e. bat for runs and declaration and back bowlers to win game).  Also admire the Saffie's ability to bat for long periods.

On other issues;

1.  Lyon disappointing on the final day, but I guess the pitch lacked wear fro him to exploit.

2.  My two cents on reverse swing...  from a bowler's perspective.  The ball will only go reverse once the seam has been abraded off.  At the same time you need to keep the surface in reasonable condition - and that's the trick.  Abrading the seam off counts for naught if the surface is too scuffed- it simply won't do anything.

The lack of wear hurt Lyon but also that was an extremely slow, flat deck.

It's a perfect storm of crap for an offie. no fizz, no bounce and any turn a all is so slow the batsman can play it off the deck.

This also makes what our pacemen did extra special. Really we have no right bowling a batting lineup like the Yarps out twice in three days on that deck.

I agree with you all the way. Coach is getting the job done and so are the players. Its a shame there was a brain fade by the side in the second test. The bowlers need to be switched on all the time. Boys with the bat too. Great job guys. ;)
