Jim Park Voting: 2019 AFL Rd 19: Carlton vs Adelaide

Remember:
[1] At least 3 players need to get a mention.
[2] No more than 10 votes for any one player.
[3] Give a rating of team performance. It can be anywhere from A+ to F.
[4] Votes must add up to 15.

I'll be at the game, so I'll probably vote on Sunday.

Best 4 quarter team effort all year - against a team with a lot to play for!

Votes:

5. Captain Crippa (another 3 Brownlow votes)
3. Levi (sign him up this week!)
2. Flip (reckon he beat the hyped Crows big man)
2. Gibbons  (coming into his own now and what a hard nut)
1. Setters (great game)
1. SPS - all class.
1. Simmo

HMs: Smurf, Daisy, Plow, Lang, Ed.

Other mentions: Big H (get your act together with your goal kicking, the lack of diligence and routine is almost laughable). Paddy D - looks even more lost now playing 'forward'. Give him some game time in the 2s. You're wasting a spot in the 1s.
Finals, then 4 in a row!

It is not easy to give the votes this week, but not because we had so few contributors, but because we had so many. Granted there are a couple of stood out, but even Liam Jones, who had less possessions than anyone else, deserved a mention. Jones took his opponent to the cleaners and did not lose a contest, while really standing up in the last quarter with great spoils and a terrific screamer.

Team:   A
There is no other way to describe the 4-quarter effort that snuffed out a team that has finals aspirations. And we snuffed then out so effectively that their coach is now under pressure. Times are changing at Carlton!

Votes:
Even the inflation effect of giving the team an A doesn’t really give me enough votes to adequately explain my choices.
[3]   Patrick Cripps
[2]   Marc Murphy
[2]   Will Setterfield
[2]   Kade Simpson
[1.5]   Ed Curnow
[1.5]   Levi Casboult
[1]   Dale Thomas
[0.5]   Michael Gibbons
[0.5]   Sam Petrevski-Seton
[0.5]   Sam Walsh
[0.5]   Jacob Weitering

Explanations:
[3]   Patrick Cripps:   His disposals speak for themselves. He was an inspiration.
[2]   Marc Murphy:   Murphy has been much maligned, and not totally without reason, but his form since he has moved back into the midfield rotations has been fantastic.
[2]   Will Setterfield:   Setters’ best game for us by some margin, with the skill and the smarts on display. His efforts in the 1st and 2nd quarter were enough to inspire anyone.
[2]   Kade Simpson:   Simmo hasn’t really had a great year, but his last few weeks have been simply inspirational.
[1.5]   Ed Curnow:   Ed started like a Nuclear missile, and while he couldn’t keep it up (17 possessions in the 1st quarter), he was still excellent. And he didn’t just get 30 odd possessions, he kept the pressure on his opponents and limited their effectiveness. He and his teammates made it so difficult for Adelaide’s mids that their ruckman had more clearances than any of them. In fact, Cripps had more clearances than the entire Adelaide team!
[1.5]   Levi Casboult:   Another 10 great marks and 3 fantastic goals was only a part of the job that Levi did. In the last quarter his marks in defence were as important as those he had in the forward 50.
[1]   Dale Thomas:   Daisy had a fair bit of the ball, while his opponents did not, but that was just the start. Daisy, like Jack and SPS, really did so much that wasn’t counted as a possession.
[0.5]   Michael Gibbons:   Another very solid game for Gibbo.
[0.5]   Sam Petrevski-Seton:   SPS deserved more than this, but … He was terrific in defence, excellent overhead and imply beautiful to watch by foot. Sensational!
[0.5]   Sam Walsh:   Sam got 30 possessions and would, most weeks, have got 2 or 3 votes. He was excellent and his clearances were really good to see. However, he was simply overshadowed by the efforts of some of his teammates.
[0.5]   Jacob Weitering:   His an got 3 goals and got more than twice the number of marks as the rest of the Adelaide forwards, but Jacob still had the better of him, especially after half time. All of Wallker’s marks were on the lead and mostly well up the ground. Weitering was not beaten in a single contest and still help Walker to 11 possessions..

Honourable Mentions:
Andrew Phillips:   When your opponent is probably Adelaide’s best player and he has more clearances than any of his midfielders, it could be argued that Phillips didn’t have a great game. That was, however, not the case. True, O’Brien got more taps, but Phillips had probably the biggest number of ‘Taps to Advantage’ of any player since that stat has been recorded. His tap work really was good when he got his hands on the ball. Had he been able to kick straight, he would have been a vote getter, as he had a huge influence and beat his opponent every time they contested for a mark. Kudos to his opponent for getting the ball, but Phillips was huge.
Liam Jones:   Jones may not have got a vote this week, he had only 5 possessions, but his game in absolutely slaughtering Josh Jenkins was crucial. Jenkins barely a touch, even when in the ruck, and simply did not influence the game. Jones’ defending definitely influenced the game, especially when Adelaide tried to rally. His mark in the last quarter was not just spectacular, it was telling: it showed what his opponents could not do.
Lachie Plowman:   Another game where his effectiveness was excellent, even when his numbers were not high.
Nick Newman:      Not far off the votes for a game where the Adelaide small forwards did very little.
Matthew Kennedy:   Not as spectacular as he has been lately, but he was a real contributor.
Jack Silvagni:   I really wanted to give Jack a vote. He didn’t get a lot of the ball, but the things he did, the tap ons, the body work, the clean disposal and all the rest was excellent. Every time he got the ball, we were a scoring chance.
