Title: Jim Park Analysis 2019
Post by: crashlander on March 23, 2019, 08:39:56 pm
I might be a bit slow with this for this round: my laptop is in for repairs. I won't have access to a computer for much of the time. I do get a computer from the school I'm at, but minimal internet privileges.
So, I will be a bit slow. But it will be done!

A little late, but better than never. I'll be back of schedule next week, now that my supplementary brain is back in action.

Round 1: Carlton vs Richmond
What is called an 'honourable loss'. :( To me it is still a loss, but considering what we could put on the park, it was a long way from embarrassing. Still hate losing.  >:(

Points of Interest:
We had 15 voters in Round 1, which is 10 less than for the same game last year. The reason for that I will not speculate on, but a number of long term posters didn't vote. Hopefully we can have a few more put in their 2 cents worth when we win next week.

The rating this week was 7.31, a not unreasonable score. That translates to a D+. Probably accurate, as we were the better team after quarter time. Our first quarter was deplorable.

We had 14 players who managed to get a vote this week, again, not unreasonable considering how we played for much of the game.

Patrick Cripps - what can you say? He started like he did last year. What a star!

Votes:
376 - Cripps, Patrick (0)
239 - Newman, Nicholas (0)
103 - Fisher, Zac (0)

Round 2: Carlton vs Port Adelaide in Adelaide
With no free to air coverage, this is another game where I saw nothing. hence my not voting. Such is life. This week will be different. Hopefully the result will be too.

We managed to get with 16 points of this mob, with them having one of the best ruck combos in the country. Another honourable loss? Appears that way to me. :( However, it also has promise. We will be getting better!

Points of Interest:
[1] Twelve people voted this week. This is 6 less than this round in 2018, but it is not unreasonable considering the distribution of pay TV through the population. Hopefully with the game back at 'home', there will be more opportunity for people to see the game, hence voting.

[2] 11 players were worthy of votes this week. Not unreasonable considering a loss. However, I am hoping that number to increase this week when we beat Sydney. When we manage about 14 players worthy of a vote, we usually win.

[3] The rating this week was 7.72, more or equivalent to a C-. Again that is not too bad for a loss. It is better than last week, and we were the better team for more of the game. Of course, when we were ordinary, we were worse than ordinary. We were crap.

[4] For the first time in quite a while we managed to have 2 players get more than 300! That is promising.

Votes:
Cripps, Patrick 350
Weitering, Jacob 309
Petrevski - Seton, Sam 243
Dow, Patrick 77
McKay, Harrison 77
Phillips, Andrew 30
Thomas, Dale 24
McGovern, Mitchell 24
Newman, Nicholas 12
Fisher, Zac 6
Walsh, Sam 6

Nice to see Walsh get a mention in his first 2 games. Nice to see the Gov get his first mention for us. Nice to have SPS get a really good score! Nice to see Paddy Dow making an impact.

Progressive Votes:
726 - Cripps, Patrick (0)
385 - Weitering, Jacob (0)
251 - Newman, Nicholas (0)
244 - Petrevski - Seton, Sam (0)
112 - Thomas, Dale (0)
109 - Fisher, Zac (0)
92 - Dow, Patrick (0)
83 - McKay, Harrison (0)
78 - Murphy, Marc (0)
47 - Jones, Liam (0)
31 - Walsh, Sam (0)
30 - Phillips, Andrew (0)
24 - McGovern, Mitchell (0)
18 - Setterfield, Will (0)
13 - Cuningham, David (0)
10 - Curnow, Edward (0)
10 - Simpson, Kade (0)

Patrick Cripps heads out to a positive lead after only 2 games. Only injury will probably beat him to the Ultimate Prize.

Rd 3: Carlton vs Sydney
Another one that got away because we don't know how to win yet, but .... :(

Points of Interest:
[1] We have 12 voters again this week, down from 16 for this game last year. That is disappointing as the game was a LOT more accessible than the previous one was. :( Is it that we are driving people away with our inability to win?

[2] The opinion of how well we played was also quite varied. The rating was this was was 7.17, which represents approximately a D+.

[3] 12 players got votes this week. We do much better when we win.

[4] Cripps was the only one to get past 300 (again!), but Jones' 257 was pretty good.

Votes:
Cripps, Patrick 305
Jones, Liam 257
Curnow, Edward 173
Walsh, Sam 152
Weitering, Jacob 84
Petrevski - Seton, Sam 45
Dow, Patrick 18
Murphy, Marc 15
Newman, Nicholas 9
Fisher, Zac 9
Casboult, Levi 6
Lobbe, Matthew 3

Cripps has probably got Brownlow votes for all 3 games this year, even though we've lost them all.

Progressive Voting:
1031 - Cripps, Patrick (0)
468 - Weitering, Jacob (0)
304 - Jones, Liam (0)
289 - Petrevski - Seton, Sam (0)

18 - Setterfield, Will (0)
13 - Cuningham, David (0)
10 - Simpson, Kade (0)
6 - Casboult, Levi (0)
3 - Lobbe, Matthew (0)

Cripps is already double the votes of anyone else.

Rd 4: Carlton vs Gold Coast
What a disaster! 1 point with 18 seconds to go. :(

Points of Interest:
[1] We have 15 voters this week, up from 12 last week, but down from 16 last year. Considering that we were only on Pay TV, that is pretty good. Maybe one day we can really win!

[2] With ratings from C to F, our effort was really polarizing. Looks like nobody appreciated our forward play. :( The rating was 6.67, a D-.

[3] 11 Players got a vote this week, with not a forward amongst them. Says a lot.

[4] This week Cripps missed 300 votes - by 2. He managed 298. Next best was Weitering.

Votes:
Cripps, Patrick 298
Weitering, Jacob 236
Walsh, Sam 178
Jones, Liam 160
Murphy, Marc 40
Thomas, Dale 36
Newman, Nicholas 29
McGovern, Mitchell 11
Petrevski - Seton, Sam 4
Setterfield, Will 4
Marchbank, Caleb 4

Progressive Voting:
1328 - Cripps, Patrick (0)
704 - Weitering, Jacob (0)
464 - Jones, Liam (0)
361 - Walsh, Sam (0)
293 - Petrevski - Seton, Sam (0)
289 - Newman, Nicholas (0)
183 - Curnow, Edward (0)
148 - Thomas, Dale (0)
133 - Murphy, Marc (0)
118 - Fisher, Zac (0)
110 - Dow, Patrick (0)
83 - McKay, Harrison (0)
35 - McGovern, Mitchell (0)
30 - Phillips, Andrew (0)
22 - Setterfield, Will (0)
13 - Cuningham, David (0)
10 - Simpson, Kade (0)
6 - Casboult, Levi (0)
5 - Marchbank, Caleb (0)
3 - Lobbe, Matthew (0)

This list really tell us a lot.
[1] Ed Curnow has been our best forward this season by a mile, and he hasn't played that well at all (except for his 4 goal effort).

[2] Some of our more important players have either very votes (Simmo, for example) or none (Charlie Curnow, for example). That shows that we've been carried by a very small number of players who have played quite decently.

[3] Our ruck division has been a real problem, with Lobbe (3 votes from 2 games) and Phillips (30 votes from 2 games). Rucks have been in the best against us for 3 out of 4 weeks. In fact, they have probably been Brownlow vote getters.

Rd 5: Carlton vs Western Bulldogs
At last the win we've been hoping for! Pity I didn't get to see any of it. Such is life: even on Fox we don't get much coverage. :(

Points of Interest:
[1] We had 14 voters this week, one down from last week and 4 less than this game last year. I guess it wasn't too bad when we weren't on TV, but I was really hoping for a big number of voters this week.

[2] The rating this week was 9.91, almost an A. The first for the year and hopefully not the last. I can't remember the last time we really deserved one.

[3] There were 11 vote getters this week. This is the same as last week. Maybe it was because I didn't put my 2 cents in. :)

[4] This was the first time Cripps has been clearly our best. He was 3rd this week. SPS was first, while H was 2nd. Even so, Cripps managed over 300 votes! SPS got over 400!

Probably because Weitering tends to get more possessions and intercept marks, but they've both been very, very good so far

Think Jones takes the game on more and his mistakes tend to be more highlighted and stay in peoples minds...

You must have been watching a different games Prof.

A couple of blunders doesn't ruin an overall game and he was far from Robinson Carusoe.

Surprised Weiters is ahead of Jones tbh....

Why?

Weitering has been the defensive general we’ve been missing, his intercept (and contested) marking has been very good and his work in moving the ball out of defence has been excellent.

Jones has been good but his work is generally one on one (although he does provide support to his fellow defenders) whereas Weitering is playing well in a much broader and more challenging role.

AFL Round 6: Carlton vs Hawthorn
The 2nd heartbreaker in 3 weeks really irritated me. We should have won. But we didn’t. By about 2 seconds.

Points of Interest:
[1]   We had less voters this week, 12. This compared to 18 for this game last year. Disappointing.
[2]   The ratings this week were all over the place. Some people considered that we played pretty well, while others thought we threw the game away. Fair enough: everybody has an opinion and our play was not easy to rate. The final rating was 7.89, which represents a C-.
[3]   There were 14 vote getters this round. We had a lot of players who did something, but very few 4 quarter players. In the end, that was a reason we lost.
[4]   Cripps ended up getting the votes, which surprised me somewhat. However, he couldn’t get the 300 votes this week.

AFL Rd 7: Carlton vs North Melbourne
What a disaster. Truly our worst performance of the year. Very little positive to discuss. :(

Points of Interest:
[1] We did have 11 players get a mention this week, but none of the performances really stuck out. Also very few 4 quarter efforts. :(
[2] The rating this week was 5.29, the worst for the year by some margin. This represents F+.
[3] There were 43000 people at Marvel on the weekend. And yet we play like that. We had 14 frustrated voted, 1 less than for the same round last year.
[4] This was Cripps' worst effort this year by some margin. He didn't get 200 votes for the first time this year. In fact, nobody did.

Sorry I'm running a little behind this week: worked at the Election. Wish our result was like that was. Anyway, I've finally finished.

AFL Rd 8: Carlton vs Collingwood

We deserved to win, but we didn't. Less I say about the umpiring, the better.

Points of Interest:
[1] We had 16 voters this week, and everyone marked our effort higher than I did. :) This round last year we had 17 voters. Considering that we were not on free to air TV, that is pretty good.

[2] The rating this week was 8.69, the 2nd best for the year so far. Unlike next round that will probably be the worst rating ever. 8.69 represents a B-, which is excellent for a loss.

[3] This round 15 of the 22 players got a mention and probably deserved one. I do notice that no umpires would be getting a vote from any of us. We got the lest number of recorded free kicks, at the worst recorded ratio (8: 24, where Collingwood got 75% of all frees given).

[4] After a quiet first quarter, Cripps came got to get the votes again. He got a massive 462 votes for his efforts. That is amazing.

Votes:
Cripps, Patrick 462
Marchbank, Caleb 174
Kreuzer, Matthew 128
Murphy, Marc 111

Casboult, Levi 38
Weitering, Jacob 30
Curnow, Edward 22
Fisher, Zac 16
Plowman, Lachlan 16
Walsh, Sam 14
Gibbons, Michael 5

This was Marchbank's best game of the season by some margin.

Well, this week we really hit rock bottom. Not only was it a terrible performance with few redeeming features, but it inspired only 6 people to vote. I have never seen voter turnout this low. It is barely a third of a our normal voting population.

AFL 2019 Rd 9: Carlton vs GWS in Sydney
A 93 point loss. No excuses. Just poor.

Points of Interest:
[1] Only 6 people voted. That isn't even enough to smooth out the outliers. 16 voters voted this round last year (for another ordinary loss). Just not good enough.

[2] Few few players managed to get a vote. Only 8 guys got a mention and only two got a reasonable mention.

[3] This was the  first game this year that Cripps did not get a vote. He till gas an enormous lead, but he played one of his very few really poor games.

[4] De Boer's game on Cripps showed the effect of having a really good player being shut down. We no longer even try that, much to our disservice. We really need someone to play this sort of game for us each week.

[5] The rating was exactly 5.0. Every single voter gave it an 'F'. That is the equal lowest rating I've ever seen.

Votes:
Newman, Nicholas 275
McKay, Harrison 217
Silvagni, Jack 92
Walsh, Sam 83
Kreuzer, Matthew 42
Fisher, Zac 17
Curnow, Edward 17
Casboult, Levi 8

What is there to say? I can at least be happy I didn't see this debacle.
From this point we have 2 choice: this can be our Manzikert, or it can be our Chippenham. I am hoping for Chippenham, but that assumes our leadership can emulate Alfred the Great. What I fear is that they are too much like Romanus Diogenes (the Roman Emperor who lost at Manzikert, a battle the Empire was never to truly recover from). :(

I'm running a little behind, but so much has happened recently that I'm not surprised that I am behind.

Round 10: Carlton vs St Kilda
Another one that got away. :( I think one of the things that did Bolton in was the fact that we couldn't beat even an injury ravaged St Kilda, who demonstrated in China just how ordinary they are at the moment. That irritated me no end. But it was a LOT better than the alternative (what we produced against the Drug Cheats).

Points of Interest:
[1] Voters returned this week. We had 14 voters, just one less than for the same round last year. That is a huge difference compared to last week, where only 6 people voted.

[2] This round 13 players deserved a mention. Again, compared to last week's pitiful effort, that is a huge step forward.

[3] Cripps was back in the votes this week, but he is definitely in a quiet patch. Hopefully the change in coach will allow him to get his form back.

[4] Sam Walsh also made a comeback of sorts, after a few ordinary weeks. He was 3rd in the votes this week, equaling his best result so far. Therein lies the future.

[5] The rating this week was also considerably better than last week: 6.69, which represents a D-. Considering how close we were, it appears that most voters were underwhelmed in our effort. Still, it is much better than F.

[6] Casboult managed one of his best vote getting displays, with 229 votes. he hasn't scored this high for a LONG TIME.

[7] Even though Daisy Thomas had been drinking two nights before the game, he still managed to be a useful player and get votes. Maybe they should all have had too much to drink?

I seem to be getting a little behind too regularly for my tastes. :(

Rd 11: Carlton vs the Drug Cheats
Not one of our better efforts. We were pretty good until the rain came. From that point we were barely witch's hats. :(
As we all now know, that loss had considerable repercussions. And it may have more before the dust settles.

Points of Interest:
[1] 10 people voted for this round. Considering that we were on TV and playing at the MCG, that was appalling. However, when we play that poorly, there are consequences and this was one of them.

[2] The rating for this game was 5.17, which is barely better than an F. It wasn't the lowest rating of the year: that was against GWS. To be honest, I've never seen a rating as low as 5.00 before, but that effort probably deserved it.

[3] 12 different players rated a mention, something of a surprise. However, very few got more than just a 'mention'. It was hard to find players worthy of getting a vote after quarter time.

[4] Patrick Cripps had a career low number of possessions. That tells you a lot.

Votes:
Kreuzer, Matthew 230
Weitering, Jacob 225
Casboult, Levi 145
Walsh, Sam 39
Dow, Patrick 39
Marchbank, Caleb 26
Cuningham, David 21

Good thing come to those who wait? Maybe, but I've waited enough. I want more of this!

Rd 12: Carlton vs Brisbane with a new coach.
If Brisbane miss a top 4 finish, then they'll know why. The Blues were back in town and playing their best footy for a long time. Especially when Brisbane got out to a 37 point lead!

Points of Interest:
[1] This week we had 17 voters, up from 13 for this round last year and 10 who voted last week. Nor am I surprised, as we produced the sort of football that gets supporters involved instead of crap.

[2] The rating for this game was 9.39, which represents a B+. Almost double last week's rating. That says a lot all in itself.

[3] Last week 12 guys managed a mention, but barely that. That week 16 players deserved real votes.

[4] Cripps managed 547 votes, the best he has ever polled. No other player gets that in 2 weeks combined.

[5] Sam Walsh has managed votes in every game this season. Even Cripps hasn't managed that.

Votes:
Cripps, Patrick 547

We were SOOOO close to making it 2 out of 2 for the new coach, but....
Yet, in some patches were were really ordinary. I guess the Dogs are not that good, but ...

Rd 13: Carlton vs Western Bulldogs at Marvel

Points of Interest:
[1] After an ordinary to poor season, Charlie Curnow burst back into the limelight in a spectacular way. It has been quite a while since a Carlton forward has been so prolific! His scores this week reflect that.

[2] We have 17 voters this week, the same as last week and 1 less than last year.

[3] This was the first time in a long time that Cripps did not dominate, and yet we were more than competitive. That is good for our development.

[4] 15 players deserved a mention this week. This says two things: we don't get enough 4 quarter efforts and we can be really good in patches.

[5] The rating this week, 7.59, represents more or less a C-, which also shows how inconsistent we were during the day.

RD 14: Carlton vs Fremantle in Fremantle: What a classic victory!

Points of Interest:
[1] 14 voters this week, even though the game was in Perth and not on free to air TV. That is one better than we managed for the same round in 2018.

[2] 14 players deserved a mention: a very positive sign.

[3] The votes were spread a lot more evenly this week, although Murphy and Ed Curnow were the standouts. This suggests that we thought it was a real team effort.

[4] The rating this week was 9.24, which is almost a B+! We played very well for 3 quarters, only very poorly in the first. :(

[5] A lot of guys got really solid votes this week. 6 players managed over 100 votes.

We played so poorly to be very unlucky to lose: if McGovern's kick hadn't grazed the post ...
Did we deserve it? Probably not.

Points of Interest:

[1] 14 voters again this week, 2 more than this round last year and the same as last week. Pretty good everything considered. It is not like we are (ever) on Free to air TV!

[2] Even though we were ordinary for much of the game, 12 players did enough to get noticed. :) However, there were very few 4 quarter efforts.

[3] The rating this week was 7.36, which represented a D+.

Carlton vs Sydney: an excellent win!

Points of Interest:
[1] 16 voters this week, compared to 15 voters last year and 14 last week. Nice to see an increase in voters as the Blues improve.

[2] A rating of 9.31 represents a B+, quite a reasonable result. I got tired of writing F's!

[3] 15 players managed a mention this week, the sign of a team where the players are contributing.

[4] 7 players polled more than 100 votes. That sort of evenness has been very rare at our club for a long time.

[5] This was Nick Newman's 2nd BOG for this year. Against his old team, that must have felt good. Nobody, other than Patrick Cripps, has more than 1 BOG. Cripps has 8 BOG's.

[6] One of our major underachievers, Darcy Lang, managed his first votes for the year!

Rd 18: Carlton vs Gold Coast
We finally win a game where we are favourites! Not perhaps our best game for the season, but it was good enough.

Points of Interest:
[1] The rating this week as 9.02, which represents a B. Good and solid. This time last year we were giving straight F's! Certainly winning is much better for my mental health!

[2] 15 people voted this week, one less than last week, but 3 more than for the same round last year.

[3] 14 players managed votes this week, a very solid number.

[4] Only 4 players this week managed 100 votes or more. But none of them were Patrick Cripps! That says something about the increased output by some of our players in recent weeks!

[5] This was Liam Jones' first BOG for the year, and the best game he's had since his return from concussion.

Votes:
Jones, Liam 377
Curnow, Edward 246
Weitering, Jacob 156
Kennedy, Matthew 134
Casboult, Levi 81
Walsh, Sam 61

Gibbons, Michael 36
McKay, Harrison 34
Murphy, Marc 20
Simpson, Kade 17

Progressive Voting:

Cripps retains his huge lead, but the race for 2nd spot is wide open with Walsh, Curnow and Weitering very close together. With only a handful of game yet, 2nd spot is up for grabs!

AFL Round 19: Carlton vs Adelaide
A delight for Carlton fans as a 4-quarter effort snuffs the C(r)ows and leaves then vulnerable.

Points of Interest:
[1]   18 voters this round, which equals the same number from this round last year. We have struggled to get near this level of participation for quite a time now!

[2]   14 players had votes this week, an excellent reward for a real team performance.

[3]   We managed a rating of 9.74, the best we have done for quite a while. This represents an A-. Magnificent!

[4]   Cripps managed almost 500 votes this week, which is a huge number. Cripps has dominated the BOGs this season, as he did last year.

[5]   Even with such a domination by Cripps, 5 players scored 100 or more votes.

4 goals, with 8 of our best missing. Not too shabby, but our forward play was not god enough to win. But there will be other days.

Points of Interest:
[1] 16 Voters this week, compared to 13 for the corresponding game last year. Not to mention a reasonable crowd. We continue to generate interest, even with less than perfect results and an extended injury list. Hope springs eternal.

[2] 12 players managed to get votes in a losing team. Again, this is promising.

[3] The rating, 7.46, is between a D+ and a C-. Much better than the F's!

[4] Nick Newman managed his 3rd BOG this season, followed by Sam Walsh with his highest placing for the year, 2nd. Thank you, Sydney. You don't often provide us with favours.

[5] 4 players managed 100+ votes this week. Not too shabby for a team that lost.

Not our best game. Such is life.

Points of Interest:
[1]   14 voters this week, compared to 12 for the same round last year. Not as good as last week, but we were terribly fumbly when the rain fell (which was for most of the game.

[2]   The rating this week was 6.98, almost an exact D. Truly I think we could have beaten them in the dry, but that is another tale.

[3]   12 players deserved a mention, with the votes more spread out than usual. In the end a lot of guys did something, but there were not a lot of 4 quarter efforts and just not enough contributors at any one time.

[4]   Even with a low rating, 5 players managed to get 100 or more votes. Jones managed his 2nd BOG in a month, even when being damaged in the process. Well done, Liam Jones!

[5]   Daisy managed his 7th top 6 placing for the year. So did Weitering. Both will be in the top 10 at the Nicholls Medal in a few weeks’ time. Sam Walsh has been a top 10 vote getter 18 times this season.

[1]   There were only 12 voters this week, down from 15 this time last year. A bit disappointing, considering we had such a win. However, most weeks we have had similar numbers.

[2]   The rating was 9.17, a little better than a B. Considering that the ‘Aints were still in it until the last quarter, we were pretty good.

[3]   17 players managed a mention this week. I haven’t checked yet, but that could well be the most all-round effort of the year.

[4]   4 players managed 100 votes or better, with a 99 as well. Very solid.

[5]   Cripps played with an ear infection that had put him into hospital, and still was more than useful.

[6]   Casboult play what arguably be his best ever game for us, with the 2nd highest number of intercept marks since the statistic has been recorded.

[7]   McGovern, Kreuzer and Casboult managed their best rated games of the year.

Rd 23: Carlton vs Geelong in Geelong.
Sorry it has taken so long, but I was really hoping that a few more people would vote.   :-[ :-[ :-[
I should have realized that nobody would after 1 week.
Never mind, it is Brownlow Medal Day and I need to get this out.

[1]   Only 7 people voted this round, an all time low. I guess, like myself, that not many of us could see the game in one form or another. However, the number was less than half of normal.

[2]   The rating for this round was 6.00, which represents an E. A very disappointing way to finish the season. However, when you kick against a strong wind for 3 quarters, it was hard to expect anything else.

[3]   Only 6 players rated a mention this week, another huge low!

[4]   5 out of 6 players managed to get over 100 votes, which is strong. However, that doesn’t make up for the huge numbers of relative non-performers.

[5]   5 out of 6 of this round’s vote getters are the 5 top vote getters for the season. This is also quite unusual.

Ultimate Votes:
Cripps, Patrick 223
Murphy, Marc 189

[1]   Congratulations to Patrick Cripps, winner of this year’s Jim Park Award. Crippa managed to get 4422 votes, to win by over 2000 votes from Sam Walsh.
Crippa was our best player on 10 occasions. This was 7 more than Nick Newman, who was BOG 3 times.

[2]   The other positions were quite close together.
2070 - Walsh, Sam (103)
1970 - Weitering, Jacob (172)
1952 - Murphy, Marc (189)
1867 - Curnow, Edward  (172)
With only 200 votes between 2nd and 5th, things really did come down to the last round.

[3]   Sam Walsh was 2nd, with 2070 votes. He did not get a single BOG but managed to get votes every single week. He was in the top 5 vote getters 13 time this season.

[4]   Jacob Weitering also didn’t manage a single BOG. However, he was in the best 17 times.

[5]   Nick Newman was BOG 3 times, while Jones managed 2 BOG’s. Nobody else had more than one.

Thanks for that, I really enjoy the Jim Park award. Cripps a very deserving winner, but also a phenomenal performance by Walsh in his first season

Thanks Crash, sterling effort as usual.

Id' say that leaves Newman our most under-rated player by some margin!
