Title: R13 Hawthorn vs Carlton (Prematch Deliberations)
Post by: ItsOurTime on June 07, 2014, 08:36:38 pm
Hawthorn v Carlton (Away game)
Friday June 13, 7:50pm
MCG

No one wants to talk about it.

This is for 11 wins in a row against us for Hawthorn. Bring the attitude that we showed against Geelong and I'll be happy.

Buckley in please and Graham this week for a baptism of fire. Guess we should run old man Judd :P

It's a indication of how we've changed under MM that I think that if this was at Etihad I'd almost put some money on us.

MM's  game plan is extremely taxing and it's easier for our guys to maintain it on the smaller ground.

Pity, but maybe we'll get within a couple of goals late in the game.

Again, I don't care if we win (welll just a bit) I just want to see what it is exactly that MM is bringing to this group.

Blues by 5 points...Hawks are just going IMO and have a few players missing and we are due after a good effort vs Geelong.
Like Brisbane surprised us i think we will surprise Hawthorn and Levi might even kick a few straight vs a undersized hawks backline...
Wont prove much though and we need consistent enough not the odd flashy win, hope we play some kids and they can revel in the win and get some confidence.
I want Gibbs to win the game for us on the back of his great game vs Geelong....and he can get some belief that he is an A grader who can beat the best in the business.
Gibbs on Jordan Lewis would be a nice matchup as Lewis has been red hot for the Hawks...

Our only hope against the Hawks is if we play high risk footy and take every opportunity to play on and run the ball at any cost. If we try any defensive style game we will lose by more than 30 points. High risk, high reward footy is our only hope. Forget playing the boundary lines.

I just reckon Cachia would be ideal for Hawthorn's midfield and Judd is a certainty to play.
Armfield is a so so footballer, he played a good first quarter last night then went missing, his good is not exceptionally good and it doesn't come around all that often.
Waite's had two shockers in a row, Henderson was marginally better than him last night but worse the week before.
Drop either of them, or Rowe, or White, I don't really care who but we've got too many big blokes not doing enough.

Agree with you re Cachia, but Armi gives you a contest every time he plays, doesn't leave much in the dressing room, has pace and a whole lot of heart. Leave out either of the W's or both.

I seem to remember Gibbs having a few good games against these guys.

I think a win would be huge for this group even if it is when Hawthorn are ripe for the picking.

Happy to leave out McLean for Cachia.

A lot's been made of Sellwood's late goal but McLean kicked one himself, had plenty of the ball and kept Sellwood to 18 touches which is his second lowest for the year and 8 below his season average.
He had 30 touches last week in a 110 point loss, I can't see McLean being dropped.

Judd the intelligent clearance machine along with Buckley and Lucas for the run at the MCG.
It will be a rugged and dure game a real ripper and we may just pull off an upset.

Season is all but shot now, take some risks and go for speed. Suggestions of dropping Armfield are crazy IMO. I reckon the side needs a few more tweaks to Fri nights team. Judd a certainty, Graham and Cachia best again, bring one or both in also. What do we have to lose?

Speed is useless if you spend all day chasing.
Hawthorn's midfield isn't quick but they are hard, skilled and experienced, if all our mids play to their best I can see McLean, Murphy, Judd and Gibbs at least breaking even if Warnock can get first hands on the ball which he should.
Our big problem has been marks inside 50, Henderson and Waite really need to lift.
This is our best chance against Hawthorn for a long time, even though they're sitting near the top of the ladder they're missing several key players and if Hale and McEvoy both miss again next week a win gets much more possible, holding Roughead, Gunston, Breust and Rioli to a losing score will be our biggest challenge.

If you play two slow players in Cachia and Graham then I think having players like Buckley and Armfiled in helps balance the speed ledger.
One of our strengths is our speed through the middle now with Yarran, Walker, Docherty taking the ball from defense and rebounding and I think we need to encourage more of that and have other players with speed who can give us an edge.
I was amazed Buckley was dropped.....I'd be replacing Garlett with Buckley and having SOJ play forward...I reckon he might create and kick a few goals bit like his old man did..

Interesting that we have not mentioned the 'head dropper' as being in danger of loosing his spot.  If the match ups are right, I'd be bringing Buckley back onto the bigger ground.  Juddy, yes, Cachia maybe.

JUst looking at the Jim Park Medal votes, Gibbs, Murphy, Yarran and Thomas all feature heavily. No surprises we pushed the Cats to within a kick. If someone like Waite or Hendo had have been in the best players we would've won by 4 goals IMO. Question is, can these four back it up against the Dawks? Really looking forward to this question being answered.

Just got a sneaking suspicion that we might see Rowe start up forward and Hendo down back.  Sam is gaining confidence and actually taking marks while Hendo needs to refocus himself.  Looking after someone else might help him regain his confidence and if for some reason either or both don't work, just swap them.
(Rowe knows how to kick a goal too).

Was saying to a good mate at the NBs game yesterday that I would bring in SOJ for Jeffy... think I beat him by about 2 seconds to the same suggestion! Either way, Jeffy cannot be allowed to front up again after those two soft efforts in the Pussy Cats game - Dawks will have seen those and will hammer him.

Love big Levi to run through Hodge and in the ensuing fight ensure our guys win it. Aside from that if we win great but in my view largely academic now for 2014.

Could be our "line in the sand" moment which I think this club needs and maybe just maybe is the start of the end of Hawthorn's dominance over us.

Who does Juddy replace?

Jeffy is nowhere near as hungry as he was when he arrived as a rookie - no longer provides the forward line pressure and rarely catches anyone to lay a tackle - leave him out until he pulls his finger out.

Is also lacking fitness or speed or something. Couple of times on Friday night he couldn't even catch a corpse. Either the repeat efforts were killing him, he is injured or he couldn't give a stuff.

Very worried about this one... another Friday night for all our weaknesses to be laid bare against our No. 1 horror side.  Even when we cover forward X another forward pops up and flogs us.  In addition, any mentally or physically suspect players will be targeted and found out.  I'm looking at you Jeffrey...

The reality is that I am not expecting to win but I am expecting a fair dinkum effort - which is a expecting a lot from this mob to back up.  Really pathetic when expecting an honest effort two weeks in a row is my greatest expectation but that is where we are at right now.   What would really get my goat is letting them pump us physically...  a real line in the sand needs to be drawn here and I'd be looking at going to war if our little blokes get dumped by the usual suspects.  We can't expect any favours from officialdom... our blokes need to be prepared to stand on their own feet and earn a bit of respect.

I don't know who comes in but one bloke definitely needs to go out and that is Garlett. Can't afford to play soft$$cks against the Hawks. Biggest problem I see is who will play on Roughead? Same type of player as Hawkins and even though Jammo did very well on him isn't he carrying an injury or six? Might be the night that Hendo finally stands up. Give him first crack and see if it propels him into form.
Tactically there is only one way you beat Hawthorn and that is fast effective play through the corridor. Hey, let's face it it'll beat any team. Problem with us is we don't have the foot skills and the turnovers will kill us.
If we play like we did against Geelong it should be a 6 goal loss. If we play like we did against Brisbane it'll be 12.

LOL. I think we'll get close but you bring up an interesting point. We play as well as our opposition allows us to play. Sounds stupid but it's as if the opposition has more say in the outcome than we do.

This was very apparent in the Melbourne game where about half way through the first Melbourne realised they could dictate play and took the opportunity.

Part of me thinks leave Judd out for this one. Can't be match fit and Hawthorn always beat him up. Though the heat is more likely to be directed at Murphy this time around so Judd might deflect some of that.

Sub might raise some eyebrows though :P

Everitt doesnt go so well on genuine KP players...reckon he will get someone like Issac Smith or Grant Birchall...the latter sets up a lot of Hawks attacks with that left boot and Mick may deem he needs a minder.

In - Buckley, Judd
Out - Garlett, White

White stiff but it's him or McLean and I cannot see Brocky being dropped. Garlett for Bucks is a no brainer IMO and with young Bucky, Docherty, Yarran, Walker, Simpson, Everitt, Armfield we have some pace and blokes that can swing between half-back, wing and half-forward. Even add a Menzel and Tuohy amongst that as good mid-size players. Gives us pace, genuine speed through the middle of the ground. Just need to use it to our advantage and keep it up for 4 qtrs as the Hawks are relentless.

Fudge me, if Judd is the sub I will go ape.

Start Judd on the bench but not sub. If/when the great man tires, sub him out for pace in the 3rd/4th quarter.

I'd like to see Juddles sit in the fwd pocket with burts on the ball plus some bench rest time.

As such Garlett can be dropped for him this week imo.

Reckon they might hold off Bucks for another week and go with Judd for McLean, and Cachia for White. But then I wouldn't be surprised if they drop Garlett and bring in Bucks.  Cachia to wear vest.

To be honest I reckon it will only be in Judd this week with someone like Garlett or White dropped. In all honesty, I'd prefer three inclusions in Judd (if ready to go), Buckley and Nick Graham. Reckon he's really earnt his spot and we are not chocka-block full of guns in the mid. Chance for young Graham to learn from one of the best units in the comp. Outs then would be Garlett, McLean and White (tad unlucky).

Team would then be:
B: Tuohy, Rowe, Waite
Hb: Docherty, Jamison, Simpson
C: Yarran, Gibbs, Armfield
Hf: Everitt, Casboult, Thomas
F: Menzel, Henderson, Walker
Foll: Warnock, Carrazzo
Rov: Murphy
I/c: Buckley, Graham, Judd, Robinson
Emerg: Cachia, Johnson, White

Tempted to get Everitt forward. He and Walker provide such awkward matchups and I think they can help take the heat off Henderson as marking targets although they are not massive units but still tall enough. The mix is good. Like the versatility of that group, it's the execution I get worried about!

Rov: Murphy

Would have thought we need insurance for Jammo. It is round 13 of 22, would be a miracle of he doesnt miss soon. Especially after the way he pulled up after last week.

If's he's not right, I wldnt play him. I don't want to have extra players in the team just as backups. Gotta play a team with players who each have a role. If he's not right to play, White or Watson may get a gig in his place. I agree though on his durability.

Bad luck for the kid. Still time to play some games at the end of the year.

Jamo in doubt also with his shoulder again.

Did his shoulder in the first contest with Hawkins in the goal square. The one where Hawkins tapped it to the cats advantage, goal.

Saw it at the time and made a comment in the in-game thread.

Jamo is used to playing with sore shoulders. Reckon he's more likely to miss with his calf injury.

He was very lame Frid night both in the leg and in the shoulder. He will surely miss this week.

I'm not so sure. Jamo has amazing recuperative powers. He'll do everything possible to get a crack at the Hawks on the night before we celebrate 150 years.

FFS Jamo out as well, it's beginning to look like no matter what sort of effort we put in the personnel will be lacking. That said, Shoenmakers will be their number 1 defender so surely Waite can take him to the cleaners? Also no Lake to cut the Cas out of the game this time around. If Murphy, Gibbs, Yazz and Carrazzo play blinders we could overcome them. This is certainly the weakest they've been for some time, no coach, no Mitchell, Lake or Buddy.

Hate this mob with a passion.

Still recall those pr1cks dropping players back when Fev was on 99 goals late in the last game of the season years ago It was the same game Buddy kicked his 100th. They did everything they could to stop Fev and did it while they were in cruise mode with the game in the bag.  :o

Really pissed me off at the time and shows how much arrogance they have.

Back to the game - Apart from Special K and Judd not being 100% match fit we are pretty close to full strength.

They on the other hand are no where near full strength. No Mitchell, no Lake, no Gibson and of course no more Buddy. If we are going to beat them no better time.  If we can hit the scoreboard and take our chances we have a real chance. Need to attack them early and really hard and put there undersized defence under pressure. Then try to hang on as they come back at us late in the 4th. Sounds familiar....... ;)

But having said all that I think if both teams play to there strengths they are too clinical and well drilled for us. Their forwards are still a big worry- Roughead, Cyril, Gunston and then watch how goals they get out of their left footer mids.

Hawks by 3-5 goals.

F*** cant believe even with this line up I still cant see us winning.  >:(

No surprises there.

Waite's lucky we don't have a big bloke in the NBs pushing for selection.

Brock Mclean 150 games! Well done Broke. They said you'd never make it lol.

Sam Newman is ripping into the umps telling them to give us a fair go saying we should have two more wins than we have thanks to them.

Hendo has been so awful that just about anything is bjj better but on paper that's a nightmare.

Waite will need to kick 6 but looking forward to seeing what Graham can bring to this game

Watson has shown plenty. Shown for the first time that he is crapping his dacks every time the footy comes near him.
