Title: AFLW List Changes
Post by: Navy Maven on May 30, 2017, 01:15:30 pm
The AFLW trade period wrapped up last week and clubs have now made their initial cuts to the playing list for 2018.

Carlton have traded out Bella Ayre and Nat Exon to Brisbane in return for Tayla Harris. Exon and Ayre are big losses, but Harris partnering up with Vescio up forward is going to make for some exciting football next season.

We also (sadly) traded Bianca Jakobsson to Melbourne in return for pick 12, which will get us back into the earlier part of the draft after trading our first three picks for Collingwood's B+F winner, Nicola Stevens. Stevens is a massive get for us, she's still young and can either play off half back or run through the middle. Her and Davey are going to be a very versatile and formidable duo next year.

From our 2017 squad, we've delisted: Alison Brown, Hayley Trevean, Kate Darby, Tahni Neston, Jessica Kennedy, Rebecca Privatelli and Jordan Ivey.  Privatelli will likely get picked up elsewhere, my bet would be GWS. Sad to see her go. Jordan Ivey is a bit unlucky, probably would have remained on the list but did her ACL in a VFLW match, and with the smaller squads we can't afford to keep any players who won't play for the season. Keep an eye out for her in the 2018 draft though.

We've also added rookie pair Maddison Gay and Kerryn Harrington.

Summary:

In: Tayla Harris, Nicola Stevens, Maddison Gay and Kerryn Harrington
Out: Bianca Jakobsson, Bella Ayre and Nat Exon (traded); Kate Darby, Rebecca Privitelli, Tahni Nestor, Jess Kennedy, Alison Brown, Jordan Ivey and Hayley Trevean (delisted).

Now bring on 2018  :D

We will miss Ayres and Exon, but we had to come up with quality for Tayla Harris.
With Harris and Vescio, we have 2 proven goal kickers who can mark the ball well and be dangerous on the ground. It gives our forward line a structure with some real X-Factor.

Our defence looks very solid, with someone to play on just about every type of forward in the game. Stevens can play just about anywhere in defence and should give us drive from defence.

Our midfield is the thing now that needs some improvement. Exon was solid this year, as were most of our mids. However, we lack that lass who can get 30 possessions in the middle. We have quite a good ruck division, but we could really do with really quick midfielder.

Lists are tight with the guys, but they are worse with the girls. It just isn't possible to sit of a couple of girls for a while and develop them, especially if there are injuries (and there are).

I thought Privatelli showed plenty. Bloody tough just needed a bit more fitness.

It depends.

There are two schools of thought.

The talent pool is limited, so players are worth a premium.

Or, perhaps the talent pool is very large, but no one knows who they are due to limited exposure in the system, and also the quality of young cattle coming through is pretty slim.

Id say its a mixture of both, and irrespective of what happens, its a bit of a chook raffle at this stage.  The exposed players may be not much better than those currently not on an WAFL list and the difference might simply have been opportunity.  This isnt like the mens, where the talent has been scoured all over the country to see who the best ones are.  We have a bunch of converts from other codes and it appears all anyone has looked for is proffessionalism.

Id say its the latter if I was gambler.  Most girls havent had the exposure or the opportunity, so finding players might be as simple as asking the coach who missed out on the initial exhibition match, and whom isnt on a list at the moment.

My memory is getting a little hazy.

Was she the girl with the thicker thighs that used to run constantly? Reminded me of Simmo.

Origin over.

Good to see Davey in top form, but a little disappointed with Harris.

Thought Downie would do better against King.

Harris will be better when the ball gets down to her more often.

How many inside 50's did the allies get?

How many times did she end up with a scoring shot?
Kicked 1.2 i think.

She'll be the key forward with Darcy Vescio scrambling around at her feet. We can't lose.

Nicola Stevens was solid down back too.

Big season for the Carlton girls i think. Get on them for the flag!

Harris fell awkwardly in marking contest. It was earlier in the game. Went off for treatment then returned. Although the ball was in the opposition half most of the time, this might have caused some issues.

Now that the VFLW finals are on, it won't be long until the Draft comes up for the girls. Hopefully there are some good midfielders going around, that is what we need. We have some decent forwards, a good defence and some of the better rucks. But strengthening our midfield is the last step.

Is it still only 1 year contracts?

I think it still is. This is probably because the rules for payment appear to be changing rapidly and nobody wants to be caught using the wrong rules.
After all, most players were rolled over during the Trade Period. The lists were updated and a number of players were delisted. The list is earlier in this thread. The new players and the retained players were given an updated contract for 2018.
That said, I know some of the players have contracts that are effectively for longer periods, on the assumption that they remain at the club. Many of the top girls get extras of various types. Darcy Vescio was one of these last year: her head was everywhere. It was worth it: she was a great face for female Carlton football.
Lauren Arnell has other duties to the club, involving coaching and development. She is also working as a commentator on the Channel 7 and the ABC. WE may be seeing more of Lauren Arnell, but that means that she might retire sooner rather than later. She is DEFINITELY going to be one of girls who makes an entire life around football. Best wishes to her.

Pencil in Kerryn Harrington into the mid-field.
Playing with us at Diamond Creek and she is a gun. Can play anywhere.
Has size, reasonable pace and great hands. Basketball background.
And has little or no exposure to football growing up. She'll thrive in the AFL environment. Talented lady.

I read today about a trans-gender player entering the AFLW. This is a real concern because we are not talking about an average sized person, at 190cm x 95kg (Almost Weitering Size) they will clearly be the biggest and strongest player in the competition.

I seriously think codes of contact sports should be regulated based on genetics to stop this sort of bias. There is a clear and legally definable demarcation that can be put in place based on chromosomes.

I suppose we could accept trans-gender players moving in the other direction, up the physicality ladder. But would it be fair in the future for Damian Monkhorst to get a sex change and play in the AFLW on big money?

How fair is it on someone like Chiocci to come up against such a player in a head on physical contest?

I suspect if this is allowed it's only a matter of time before money motivates someone or some club to do this deliberately, at which time the whole competition becomes corrupt. Will AFLW be recruiting trans-gender West Indian Basketballers next season?

This would be an unfair scenario, but the idea that this would become common is probably a misnomer or fear factor.

Not many people I know would undergo a sex change for financial gain particularly when you have to start the process early and from what I understand it isn't exactly cheap.

I do agree that the sports world has some huge challenges in this regard and I have no idea how to solve that particular issue.

Having a few trans friends myself I can 100% guarantee that no one would go through this process just to play a sport...especially one that doesn't look like being particularly financially rewarding for quite a long while.

It's such a brutal process; emotionally, physically and socially. It's not a decision made on a whim, and is often seen as a life or death situation for those who go that journey.

As for this particular case, I feel torn. I am a staunch advocate for equal opportunity, but I also see how this could potentially derail all the hard work that's gone into launching this competition (rightly or wrongly). It will become such a focus of discussion and will only give the haters another reason to mock the competition.

There is a lot of confused people out there, sport should leave it to the genetics and stop playing and debating in the gray areas.

What happens when an unscrupulous club like CheatsFC enter the competition? Do you trust them when they can freely nominate a 7ft Trans-gender West Indian as their international rookie?

I know this is an extremist point of view, but AFLW just created a multi-million dollar monster and there are some who have a history of extremes.

It's such a brutal process; emotionally, physically and socially. It's not a decision made on a whim, and is often seen as a life or death situation for those who go that journey.

I don't agree that it would discourage people. I do have LGBTI family members including one that has been re-assigned. But, I also know of young women who have traveled to Russia to have their legs extended artificially to aid their modeling / acting career! A process that basically hospitalizes a person for about one year just for a couple of inches to meet a perfect specification, all for fame and profit!

If your birth certificate says female then you can play in the AFLW, if it says male then you can play in the AFL.

Im not sure if you noticed, but last year apparently they implemented genderless birth certificates so that the child can choose themselves later on....

A lot of sports have a womens division and an 'open' division. Stops a lot of the confusion just there. Not a 'mens' division, but 'everyone else who is not female' division.

Going into the definition of what a female is could be up for debate though.

Not entirely true Thry.

It is now possible to change the gender on one's birth certificate to reflect gender re-assignment but birth certificates still record the child's gender.

Did it identify the player and what club was involved?
Does the player have an elite backgound in another sport?

Sure, but they were pushing for this to occur in social media and I never let the truth get in the way of a good gag which also sports a hint of a problem in relation to MBB's point regarding what gender your birth certificate says you have.

No history of the players past, only that they currently play in NSW AFLW aligned comp and have nominated for the draft.

Quote
Canberra footballer Hannah Mouncey wants to become the first transgender player in the AFLW, with the 27-year-old set to declare for the draft in October.

Mouncey stands at 190cm and played in the Australia handball team which tried to qualify for the Rio Olympics, before beginning hormone treatment almost two years ago.

This a an Ex.Olympian who is undergoing gender re-assignment, that is what I feared and it would be very wrong and unfair for Chiocci and others!

I suppose a lot on here predicted it, but the news that recently retired Sharni Layton is thinking of entering the AFLW just highlights the big problem a lot of other females sports are going to have retaining players.

Just speculation, but if AFLW did not exist would Layton have announced a retirement?

Was that retirement encouraged by an AFLW team, the AFLW, the AFL, or is it due to the lack of income available to the netball players?

I feel sorry for some of the other sports, AFLW is already passing them just based on the AFL's spare change!

Now they are getting paid too much that other sports are suffering.
