Title: ALFW B&F Thread
Post by: crashlander on February 05, 2017, 10:16:08 am
Ladies and gentlemen, the moderating team has posed an interesting question that only you, the potential voters, can answer. What was posed was the existence of an ALFW B&F award.

So, we need to answer a lot of questions and suggestions to the moderating team will be gratefully accepted.
[1] Do you want one?
[2] What should it be called?
[3] What should the winner get?
You get the idea.

It was determined that we should have a 3 - 2 - 1 award at this point, until we can determine what may be the best long term solution (assuming the people want to vote at all).
So, I'll start things off. However, please consider the necessities of this award. Even if there is an overwhelming voter response, we still have a lot of work to do before we can get something like the Jim Park.

Round 1: Carlton vs Collingwood:
[3]   Brianna Davey
[2]   Darcy Vescio
[1]   Danielle Hardiman

With apologies to Bianca Jakobsson, Nat Exon, Laura Attard and Lauren Arnell, all of whom deserve a vote.

[2] What should it be called?

Name it after the woman who has done more for Carlton than any other!

The Rita Silvagni Medal :D

(is that a bit sexist  ???)

The idea would be to name it after a prominent woman player...my suggestion would be to leave it nameless for this season and name it after our first B&F winner.

I'd prefer the same format as Jim Park ... but I don't tally the votes.

3 - Davey
2 - Jacobsson
1 - Vescio

Team: B+  :)

As for the name of the award, how about someone from our last women's team?

It may be that we go down that path next year but with a short season we thought it best get something going, keep it simple, judge the interest (see how many vote each round) and build on it as the competition develops.

A suggestion for the name, and even though she's a Bulldogs woman, she's the major reason that the women's comp even exists today, the Sue Alberti medal (at least for the first year until we have some Carlton women to name it after?? A lot mightn't know that Sue has been a major financial backer and vocal supporter of women's football for decades. She might have been the VP of the Western Bulldogs, but she's right behind all of the teams in the women's comp. She was at our game on Friday.

As for my votes:

3. Bri Davey
2. Darcy Vescio
1. Lauren Arnell

I cant vote as I only saw a half.

Sue Alberti can have their version of the Brownlow, rather than the CFC B+F.

Shes a doggies woman anyway.

It could be argued that the Jeannie Pratt medal would be good.

Without the Pratts there might not have been a Carlton Football Club for a womans team to represent.

I dont necessarily like that alternative either.

I like the Jim Park format myself, as I do spread my votes around somewhat. But with the questions around of the long term interest, I was a little dubious about tasking people to make such a commitment. 15 votes is a commitment and we don't have that many people who vote for the Jim Park every week.
Assuming the interest continues, we may well head to that format.
As for tallying up the votes, I assumed I was doing it.

So did I, and I didn't want to create more work for you ... unless you really want to do it  :)

I think it's probably best to stick with 3,2,1 and re-evaluate at the end of the season.

Between Navy Maven, myself and crash we'll take care of the tallying (and double checking ;D) each week so keeping the format simple this year will mean it won't be too arduous. If we go to an extended format like the Jim Park next year one of the site members might like to take it on as a task.

What we'll do is keep the thread open until midnight Thursday then we'll lock it up and tally the votes for the week.

The highest vote winner gets the three, second highest the two and third highest the one.

A possible 24 votes over the eight weeks.

The electoral college system Lods  :)

It's a bit of a "winner (Top 3) takes all" system :D...but the only other player with multiple votes was Arnell (Jakobsson 7, Arnell 5)
So we've pretty well got the top 3 right.

...and Davey clearly won the popular vote ;)

3. Jakobsson
2. Arnell
1. Loynes

Special mentions to Exon and Davey. I mean it's hard not to have Davey in there as top possession getter, but I reckon the influence of someone like Loynes was more noticeable. 5 tackles and a massive amount of pressure around the ball stopped GWS from getting clean breaks at a number of stations. Arnell led from the front again. Maybe it's the strapped shoulders, but for me she's the women's Juddy. Bulldozed through to get the ball out of stoppages when it counted most.

Tough to vote, Jakobsson and Audley could have got votes.

I thought Exon's and Audley's attack on the opponents and the pill was, along with Arnell, showed real leadership when the club needed to lift.

Yes, Loynes was really influential, and really hard at the contest.  I'm still pondering my votes but I don't think I can squeeze her in and that's why I'm not all that enamoured of the 3-2-1 system.  Anyway, there's no point crying over spilt milk and I'll just have to make a judgement call  :)

The girls are tough to vote on, the possession counts are low and someone can have single figure disposals yet still be influential.

It's like the old days when a stay at home forward might get 7 kicks and 3 or 4 goals! Or the fullback who gets 3 or 4 kicks but keeps the gun FF goalless !

Ridiculously hard to give votes this week. Could've given votes to 10 players easily.

I'll settle with...
3. Davey - Highest possession winner on the ground, daylight ahead of 2nd. Solid, consistent and dependable.
2. Vescio - Quiet game compared to last week, but thats because the ball didnt get down there as much. Still extremely dangerous when the ball is near her. 2 goals
1. Exon - Relentless in the 1%'s. Plays like simmo. Our =highest tackler on the day, never dies wondering with repeat efforts a plenty. Team player.

KGJ, Sierlaw, Downie, Jakobsson, Loynes, hardimann, arnell.....the list goes on, all unlucky.

Bit harder this week as quite a few were more prominent.
That's a good thing...we're starting to get more familiar with the players and their strengths and limitations.

We've gone with the 3, 2, 1 for this season.
We realise it's not ideal, and no doubt we'll rejig it for next season.
This year is just about judging interest.
The thing is though if we're having 10-12 people voting we will usually end up with a fair consensus for the top 3. If we get a tie for a position we'll use a count-back system to break it.

My votes.

I'll leave this open for another 24 hours.
If you saw the game you might like to vote.

I won't be awarding votes based on  just my own selections so it may be we don't add to the leaderboard this week.

One of the problems we face is that coverage of these games is a little limited.
If we're going to go to a full blown coverage of these games in terms of threads and discussion next season we need to determine if the interest is there.

Didn't see it all live as it was played before the sports-bars open OS, tried to watch the replay but the AFL have video replays geoblocked from here.

If your OS and traveling you cannot subscribe to normal services because they are either not portable or they get geoblocked when you shift regions.

Same from me.

We had visitors over so just had a casual glance at the TV every now and then with the intention of watching the replay....haven't got around to it yet.

Slim chance i might watch it over the weekend....but no promises.

I reckon Hosking has been underrated in earlier games, her run and carry is enormous to us and she is getting better week by week. It generates deep F50 opportunities for the likes of Vescio.

Davey is a machine.

Arnell is important to us, a bit quiet today but when she went off momentum changed.

Shierlaw covers a terrific amount of ground for a player her size, she must be one of our better athletes.

Hope Exon isn't too seriously injured, we missed her zip around the contests.

I've like what Hosking has done ever since round 1. She would've been in my top 5 votes in probably most games, but not quite top 3.

My issue with her is that she gets caught with the ball too much.
I also think her pseudo-twin in Loynes gets her perhaps some more credit than she deserves. Both are hard nuts with long flowing blonde hair who are easily mistaken.

I think Vescio is underrated. She is played deep, and as a result has limited opportunities. What she does with those opportunities would make Eddie Betts blush. Leading goal kicker in the league...and has a mere 2 votes for the year so far.

That's probably more to do with our voting system Kruds.
We decided to keep it basic because the season is so short and we weren't really sure how much interest there would be....add in the complicating factor of TV coverage being a bit limited.

Vescio would have been my fourth pick today and I'd have liked to have put young Ayre in as well

I would have had Vescio in my best 5 in the games I have seen.  That probably would still leave her well behind Davey but maybe pushing for second.

Really wanted to get Vescio in the votes, likewise Hosking and Loynes, but in the end have gone with:

3. Davey
2. Lucas-Rodd
1. Downie

The more games they play together, the more contributors I'm noticing. Congratulations to our women's crew. This week is very difficult to narrow it down to three, but here goes.

3 Davey
2 Hoskins
1 Vescio

HM Bella Ayres, Downie, Lucas-Rodd

I could.
Would everyone be happy with that...it might help break some ties for the placings.

Just BTW there's no coverage of this week's game but there is a delayed telecast on Fox footy tomorrow night.

Correction the match is live now on 503

I wouldn't. I think giving half points is silly. If they tie, they tie - just like the boys.

All over bar the shouting. In some ways it shows that we need a bigger contribution from more players. In other ways, it shows just how influential Davey has been in our team, as we have pretty even team other than her.

 ;D
Davey still gets three votes even when she's the third best player.
I'll take that as a 1 for Davey.
I'll tally them up tomorrow and we might be able to declare a winner if it's clear-cut :)

Yep
We could do a countback but they've all had solid seasons so we'll let them share the glory :D

A fitting winner.

Certainly well deserved, the clear winner.

I think we should call it the "Vivienne Kerr Medal", "Vivienne Kerr Shield" or something similar.

Just on this, should be have sticky threads on the home page that list the winners of the things we vote on?

Bri Davey has not figure in any of the official rewards so far;

Erin Phillips gets the MVP.
Daisy Pearce Best Captain.
Chelsea Randall Most Courageous.

Does anyone know what the voting system is, I assume these are AFLPA awards not AFLW awards?

I think Bri has won the Herald Sun Award AND the AFLW Footy Show award for best player. That's 2 media awards.
