Title: AFLW 2022b - R5 vs Melbourne - Fri 730 @ Ikon
Post by: kruddler on September 17, 2022, 09:45:26 pm
We've had 2 draws on the run, i would like to end that with a win, but we are up against the all conquering Dees, so i'd be more than happy to make that 3 draws in a row.

Dees are undefeated this year. Made the GF last year and will be our toughest game of the year by far.

Miracles do happen though....

Tayla Harris will be well rested in returning from her 1 match suspension. Wonder if she will be any good, last year she wasn't missed.

Another week, another series of injuries in Navy Blue.

https://www.carltonfc.com.au/news/1225741/aflw-injury-news-four-blues-unavailable
Quote
CARLTON forward Phoebe McWilliams will be unavailable for the remainder of the season due to a stress fracture in her foot.

Quote
Scans have also confirmed Blues forward Darcy Vescio suffered a broken finger on Saturday.

Vescio consulted a specialist and will require surgery, which they will undergo tomorrow. At this stage the 29-year-old is expected to miss just the one game.

Quote
Amelia Velardo and Paige Trudgeon will also join McWilliams and Vescio on the sidelines after both experiencing concussions during the trip to Perth – the pair have entered the mandatory 12-day AFLW concussion protocols.
Thats 4 players out.
We already have 2 out for the season - Guerin and Austin, making it 6 for this week.
We only have a list of 30 and 21 are picked.

Every available player on our list will be named on the team sheet this week
21 in the team and 3 emergencies.

Of course, this is assuming there isn't any injured players i don't know about!

Our luck with injuries is .... I don't have the word for it actually.

Dees wiped the floor with us a few weeks back. They'll do the same this week. I feel sorry for the girls already but hope they can approach it with a "lessons" mindset.

It’s good to see Serena Gibbs back in the team.  If she can hit her straps, we could really stretch Melbourne’s defence.

The likes of Skepper, Sherar and Plane and our midfielders will have to be on their toes.

CARLTON

B: G.Pound 6 V.Laloifi 8
HB: J.Dal Pos 2 D.Walker 23 L.McEvoy 13
C: C.Hammans 17 E.O'Dea 46 K.Peterson - C 9
HF: K.Skepper 4 J.Good 12 K.Sherar 25
F: I.Milford 28 N.Plane 32
Foll: B.Moody 16 M.Hill 10 A.McKay 5
I/C: B.Vickers 24 S.Gibbs 33 L.Goss 20 C.Bernardi 44 A.Lee 11

Emerg: T.Ortlepp 34 J.Jones 15 P.Schaap 35

In: C.Hammans, N.Plane, S.Gibbs, C.Bernardi
Out: P.Trudgeon (injured), P.McWilliams (injured), D.Vescio (injured), A.Velardo (injured)

Bernardino comes on to play her first game for the club. Significant because she is not even on our list of 30 players!

In my talk of available players earlier, I forgot that Brooke walker is still unavailable due to rugby commitments. So at heat we have 23 players to choose from.

From memory Bernardi was a tigers player and a tough nut at that. She may have even got suspended for a rough tackle. With nothing to lose, I wouldn't want to get in her way tonight.

Bernardi was Collingwood’s leading goal kicker in 2018 and made the All Australian team that season - not that All Australian selection means a lot.

Hopefully, Christina hasn’t slowed down or been overtaken skills wise by the latest crop of players.

We’ll find out soon enough.

Correct.
She also played for tigers though.

Another former Collingwood player who played for tigers was Lauren Tesoriero...and that's who I was thinking of above.

And Christina played for GWS between Collingwood and Richmond, and was their leading goal kicker in 2019.

She couldn't get a run with Richmond in the earlier 2022 season and was delisted.  She was a train on player with us and, although she didn't make the team, she shouldn't be too far off the pace.

Harris has 3 goals already.
Another list management master-stroke 😂

Composure and plain old clean hands are killing these girls, Melbourne have it, we lack it.

8 v 50.
I'll take that. Better than the 80pt belting last time we played.

Fairly accurate showing of where our team is at. Life at the bottom 🪜

It’s hard to know where we are imho.
We are SO fumbly that who really knows what our game plan is ?
If we could gather and hit out first option we would have a better idea of where we sit.
The endevour is there in spades, it’s a bit like the mens the last couple of years the ball is just living in our backline, the weight of forward entry’s means that the backline will inevitably let through enough goals that we lose.
Too often we seemed to try to handball to someone who was too close which didn’t help.

I haven't watched the game yet but I have been thinking for some time that the lack of handballing power in the women's game limits its effectiveness.  It's more of a last resort than a way to fashion an attacking chain of possessions.

Not sure if power is king but fumbles and poor disposal are the grim reaper.
Shortish, accurate and cleanly recieved handballs would probably be ok.

Several times tonight with the backline under siege a poor handball went to the back which was fumbled and given up allowing the GoDees to push the ball deeper forward, rinse repeat…

Pearce's handball to Harris deep i50 resulted in a goal. Nothing wrong with that. Our girls fumble. A lot. Also seem to be outmuscled. A lot.

In the end the result was about right.
We are missing 7 players from our best line-up which means we don't even have enough backups to field a competitive side.
Thought bernardi was pretty good considering the late Callup.

1/3 of your side out and losing your captain for chunks of the game to cap things off just socks.

Put it behind us, move onto next week starting now.

I felt they were outmuscled more because they fumbled or didn’t take clean position.

I forced myself to watch, Carlton has no system other than short handle balls to team mates under more pressure. Work rate to get to get into space or get in numbers to create a chain of possession is also lacking. They gave plenty of effort when they didn't have the ball, just didn't seem to when they had the footy.

I find it hard to watch our gals. They bust a gut and give their all, but (as others have noted) when they get the aggott they seem to just give it to the nearest team mate, regardless.

As I commented above, IF they were composed and took clean possession then cleanly disposed of it to a teammate in the clear they MAY show a beautiful system, problem is they are constantly cleaning up a shiitefight and putting themselves under enormous pressure at the same time.
If they can find a circuit breaker and find composure and ball skills they may do what the mens team did this year, come out and play clean football and look organised and dangerous and build from there.

Spot on. You nailed the key word - composure.

How to find it is the question though…
When you’ve got it, the world is your oyster, when you don't however…

Experience is what we are lacking...that helps with composure
