The cricket community worldwide is in mourning today following the death of Phillip Joel Hughes, aged 25.

Cricket Australia announced the news with a statement from team doctor Peter Brukner.

"It is my sad duty to inform you that a short time ago Phillip Hughes passed away," Dr Brukner's statement read.

"He never regained consciousness following his injury on Tuesday.

"He was not in pain before he passed and was surrounded by his family and close friends.

Awful news!

I really feel for his family and Australian cricket.  He was very well liked and his team mates and opponents alike must be devastated.

RIP.

Sad day. A young man with a very good life ahead of him taken by a freak accident.

I hope three things happen from here.

1 - There is no knee jerk reaction to the bouncer.
2 - The players do play the first test in honour of Phil Hughes, maybe have shirts with his test number over the players hearts.
3 - That more is done into helmet research so this cannot happen again.

Also feel for Abbott. I doubt this young man could ever play again given I don't think he could ever bowl a bouncer if he did come back.
