Tim Smith

I haven't had much time for Tim Smith but he went up in my estimation when he stood up to Bernie Finn, a relic of the religious right.

I suppose that the fact that Smith was the shadow Attorney-General despite not having a legal background is symptomatic of the poor numbers and lack of talent in the Victorian opposition.  However, his blustering, poorly constructed criticisms of the Government's legislative program were embarrassing and confirmed that the media is the real opposition to the Andrews's Government.

Getting p1ssed and smashing his car, fortunately with no injuries other than a severely bruised ego, was more than an error of judgement, as Smith described it.  It was the irresponsible act of a person who shouldn't hold public office.  He didn't even apologise to the owner of the car and house that he smashed into and implied that he hadn't caused any damage other than to his own car.

A police officer found to have the same blood alcohol reading as Smith would be sacked immediately.  Why shouldn't the same principles apply to those folk elected to make laws on our behalf?

Parliaments, State and Federal, are known for their drinking culture.  It's time for political leaders to say enough is enough and drop the mealy-mouthed platitudes that the Lobster uttered today  >:(

If the Libs want to be seriously considered as a viable replacement Government in this state, they need to show the back door to anchors like Bernie Finn and Tim Smith.
This is now the longest premiership drought in the history of the Carlton Football Club - more evidence of climate change?

Krogerism

There remains a bit too much nepotism in the Vic Liberals for my liking, old school seats around Kooyong and Glen Iris are deeply entrenched in the power hierarchy, they need to look further afield for some fresh blood that isn't dependant on the generosity of the 85 year old widow of some long gone oligarch.

I think they also need to distance themselves from the Nationals as well, while the Northern species remain staunchly right wing, the Southern species is becoming more left wing over time as farms south of Byron become hybridised vegan green organic goddess havens for free range holistic lunatics. A crew that covertly can be more extreme than the Proud Boyz, they just don't show it in a way that goes beyond throwing the odd bucket of red paint over a celebrity chef!

So, the master of the sh1t eating grin has backed Tim Smith:

Quote
"Our party needs more fighting spirit, especially in Victoria, and Tim is the one state Liberal MP who has most consistently and effectively attacked the Andrews government," Mr Abbott told The Australian newspaper.

Mr Abbott said the one incident should not disqualify "one of our best Victorian talents" from sitting in parliament.

Apart from condoning Smith's drink-driving and ignoring his p1ss poor response and failure to take responsibility for his own actions, Abbott has mistaken Smith's constant puerile attacks as effective.  Indeed, it is a sad day for the Liberal Party if Smith is "one of our best Victorian talents".  The Libs should give Smith the flick pass and nominate John Pesutto to stand in the by election.  At least Pesutto is intelligent, articulate and considerate ... but that may concern Guy  :-\
