NRL Player Sentenced to Two Years Jail.

I hope this sends a message to not just sports stars, but society in general.

Quote
Newcastle Knights rugby league player Russell Packer was sentenced to two years in jail on Monday after a Sydney court heard that he stomped on his victim after a fight in Martin Place.

Magistrate Greg Grogan said the 24-year-old's behaviour was cowardly and deplorable.

Stomped on the victim. Weak as farking piss.

Probably should have got more, but anyone who thinks two years in the 'big house' is any fun is way off.

Seems to be a big issue in society atm if media reports are to be believed, not just in one particular code.
Agreed "H", but gee wiz, the NRL boys seem to always find a way to disgrace themselves and their code.

As opposed to AFL who are pillars of society and walk on water...

No wait hang on, which DH is in trouble this pre season?

Collins?
Tuck?
Cousins?
Fevola?
Scotland
Milne?
Essendon Football Club?
Dikileaks?
St. Kilda Schoolgirl?
That father son bloke from Western Bulldogs?
Daniel Rich for abusing the bloke in the wheel chair?

Lets face it, there will always be a minority that get up to mischief, and this holier than thou mentality has no place in our society, especially when we are sitting here crossing our fingers that our blokes are clean this summer.

There's d1ckheads in every part of society. We hear it especially out of various sports codes because it sells news. There's plenty of stories from society that we don't hear about...doesn't mean there isn't tenfold the farkwits.

Rich, poor, or otherwise.

I agree with this. Just easier to report on public figures playing sports that are followed by the masses. It is a cowardly act though no matter what people think.

Are incidents like this becoming more common, or is it simply that now they are becoming public knowledge?
I am not supporting this person: his act was not one I consider worthy of a human. However, we seem to hear far more about things like this today. There were d*ckheads in sport in the 1940's, yet their 'exploits' were rarely in the news.

The media is everywhere these days. Minor things can turn into crimes of the 21st century even. For example... Joe Bloggs in a bar whips out his iPhone and records a punch-up involving a sports star. It becomes news. Jane Citizen pulls out her phone, takes a photo of a confrontation in a bar and posts it on Twitter. The photo has the sports star visibly pissed off and shoving the other bloke. In an instant it becomes news to the wider world. Perhaps what happened after the initial confrontation is both blokes walked away. But we're not to know that. There's been a high profile sportsman involved in violence, and that is enough to send the masses into hysteria. What about little Johnny who looks up to this sports star? Won't somebody please think of the children? Club gets wind, enrols said player in counselling to keep sponsors happy, supporters investing in memberships and club image intact.

This is different to what has happened with this NRL player no doubt. But within a split second, anything a sportsperson does these days becomes news through social media.

It's very lucky for a lot of the old Carlton boys of the 70s/80s/90s that camera phones and social media outlets weren't around.

One of the few times I'll agree with you Gozza, this guy is a Neanderthal with no right to be in society ever !!
