Robert Heatley Stand / Re: The Zuton factor - Pressure pressure pressure pressure pressure pressure
As i stated, i'm not saying they are the perfect stat, but if you want a rough guide on what players are doing that most supporters are not taking notice of, the pressure act stat is a good example. As mentioned, a player with a lot of pressure acts is clearly applying more pressure than a player with very little. You could argue individual numbers if you wish, but thats missing the point.

re Amy Winehouse....i did say its my opinion. Others can differ and thats fine.

I find it difficult to have sympathy for someone boasting about not going to rehab....and then dying because of it.

.....and i'm a huge Nirvana fan, so i understand some similarities with Kurt Cobain.

Last season Zac Fisher wasn’t laying tackles but his pressure acts were high.  He was dropped…

Cottrells first two games this year doesn't indicate he has improved from last year but he is not alone on that.
Fogarty, Harry, Charlie have started the year well and above the personal best averages...Hollands, Cottrell, Owies, Cunningham way down and struggling to put teams away due to their below average output..

And that’s where Vossy and the MC would disagree with you; Cottrell and his mates are doing exactly what’s required of them.

Amy Winehouse.....thats what you take out of this?

Personally couldn't give a stuff about her and her wasted life.

However, you want to argue about pressure stats now. As usual you misunderstand the point of them. Its a guide, a reference a relative measure.
It doesn't matter how accurate they are as they are as accurate for one player as they are for another player. If one player has heaps and another player doesn't, guess who provided more pressure?

That's a bit rough on Amy and those who appreciated her immense talent.

The thing with pressure acts is that they're nebulous.  As Matty Cottrell's comment implies, the people who matter at footy clubs value some player actions that many spectators - and commentators - may not even notice.  Some of those actions may be pressure acts, some may not.  Some pressure acts may be valued by coaches and MCs, many will not be.

Take Ollie Hollands' two spoils against Lynch, one of which resulted in clean possession to Hollands and a rebound 50.  I think I can safely assume that Vossy would be rapt with those two efforts.  He wouldn't be quite so happy with Cuners taking his opponent to the boundary line, then stopping because he thought the ball was out (it was, but the boundary umpire was unsighted).  Cuners is credited with a pressure act but his opponent gets balanced and kicks the ball downfield without any pressure.

Robert Heatley Stand / Re: AFL Rd 3 2024 Pre Game Prognostications Carlton vs North Melbourne
Dropping Kemp was a mistake last September, I don't think we should make that same mistake again.

I think that our defence works better with both Kemp and McGovern in the mix, but Kemp does struggle against much taller opponents.  The problem is that all seven defenders are playing well and working well together.  Weitering has to be an automatic in but who goes out ... Boyd?

Guv may have given a little too much away:

“There’s potential for [Weitering, Marchbank and Martin to return].

The boys have been having a really good training block, I’m really uncertain with what it is, it’s up to the coaching staff with how they get through this week.

Fingers crossed … either way, we’ve got the ‘next man up’ mindset, so we’ll see how we go.”

Instagram post this morning suggesting Weitering is "locked in for a return for Carlton on Good Friday against North Melbourne".

Not confirmed yet but that'll be a huge boost.

Maybe Weitering/Martin in for Young/Fantasia?

Why would Young be dropped?

North have Larkey (198cm) and Coleman-Jones (200cm) as key forwards.  If Weitering is back, he would have to take Larkey.  As good as Kemp was against Richmond, he will struggle against Coleman-Jones.  Young has been good in both games and would be the perfect match up for Coleman-Jones.

I think that this comment from Matt Cottrell is relevant:

"People don't come to the footy to watch a half-forward run his patterns. They come for Charlie Curnow, not a high half-forward whose job it is to connect with the winger. But it's a good role, it suits my game and the way I play.

I can get up and support the backs, then hopefully challenge my opponent going back to goal. But, to give credit to the club, they really value it. Internally, it's highly valued. It gives me a bit of motivation to keep doing it."

Supporters naturally pay more attention to the big name players and spectacular individual efforts (or errors).  The work done by lesser lights like Cottrell, Hollands, Cuningham, Fogarty, Owies, Fantasia and Boyd is often overlooked.

Agreed Thry.....if we're serious and on, we should win easily. We still need to learn how to really bury sides when we have the advantage and % could be critical come the pointy end of the season.

I'm not sure whether we've learned to keep the foot on the throat of average opposition, with a couple of notable exceptions last season.

No AFL teams are easybeats, and North has some talent, but you'd have to be expecting at least a five goal margin.

Robert Heatley Stand / Re: VFL 2024 Rd 2: Carlton vs North Melbourne at Arden St
Its that balance of coaching for wins and or development only and I think the latter is the priority. When Carlton teams were good in the 60's, 70's etc I never remember the twos being overly successful.

Box Hill did well when the Hawks were flying.

Winning VFL premierships isn’t the be all and end all but it would be better if the transition from VFL to AFL was seamless.  We can’t expect the same skill level but we should expect the same intensity.

Watched the North v Dockers game today. North were good early but you can see they're a relatively young side still. Turnovers and butchered the ball when they had Freo right under the pump early in the second quarter and then couldn't go on with it.

Apart from Larkey, they don't have any tall forwards and they don't really have any key defenders either. They've recruited a stack of talented midfielders over the last few seasons but no key position players that I can think of.

If we get plenty of the ball and use it well, Charlie and Harry should have a very Good Friday.

Fisher got plenty of the ball but doesn't kick it more than 30m and got caught on his wrong side plenty of times.

North played Larkey and Coleman-Jones as key forwards and back up rucks, and Corr, Pink and K Dawson as key defenders.  None of them made much of an impression.

Larkey and Coleman-Jones will trouble Kemp with their considerable size advantage, and Larkey's ability.  Freo went with two tall key defenders and we should do the same.

Ladies Lounge / Re: VFLW 2024
Quite a good representation of AFLW players in that squad Crash.

Perhaps we're going to take a different approach and get more games in to the AFLW girls.  That should make the VFLW team a lot stronger.

One of my nephews manages the IT for a major medical research facility.  He had to build a supercomputer to enable AI interpretation of millions of breast screens.  It’s theorised that there’s a link between female breast conditions and heart attack probability.  The research couldn’t be done without AI.

He told me that the advances in RNA vaccines prompted by COVID have opened the door to treating a range of conditions.  This is more traditional research rather than AI enhanced but it’s still playing a part.
