Robert Heatley Stand / Re: Post Game Analysis: AFL 2021 Rd 8: Carlton vs Western Bulldogs
Williams has bone bruising on his ankle I think it is. Why on earth he is just not given 4 weeks or whatever off and the Club come out and say so is doing no one any favours.

Re other players to invite in to the Club in the off season, apart from rold gold types like free agent Zach Merrett, I'd be keen on established Premiership players, as I have said a number of times before.

Our Club lacks high standards and expectations and lacks a winning culture.

Josh Caddy (contracted for 2022 but can't get a game), Kamdyn McIntosh (uncontracted end of 2021), Jason Castagna (uncontracted end of 2021). All Premiership players and would add to our winning culture that we have basically none of.

As for our coaching group, apart from Luke Power, none of our coaches have any Premiership winning experience I don't think either.

Not sure Teague is going to want to experiment and tinker with a smaller lineup given his job is on the line.
The reality is the next three weeks are going to be crucial for the team and his career and I just dont see him messing with too many kids or cute positional changes unless ordered to....

It just might save his career to make some changes!

I understand your frustration with our side and your wanting to make changes.

But to me the side you have selected just exposes how weak our list is.  For example, Pittonet is the one and only ruckman in your side. Who relieves him?  If we use McGovern, who goes to CHF?

Setterfield and Dow are average at best with ball disposal and like O'Brien can go missing for periods of time during the game.  If they were all to go missing at the same time as Cuningham then we would be in real trouble.

We are so short of KPPs and a ruckman that picking a side with what is available is just changing deck chairs.......

No I'd use McGovern and/or Kennedy as 2nd ruck/relief ruck. Cripps to play mostly forward to allow kids to be given time and exposed to the top level. All about opportunities ala Darcy Parish at Essendon.

McGovern, to me, does his best work either in defence or with a greater role. Ie, not as the 3rd or 4th banana. I think he needs added focus and responsibility as a focal point. I'd be going with more runners and crumbers so I'd certainly consider Owies or Honey. This happened with McGovern through injury at the start of last year and he was relief pinch hitting ruck. with the two main tall forwards as Gov and JSOS. I think one genuine key forward in McKay with a rotation of smalls and medium types - Kennedy, Silvagni, McGovern as an example. Casboult is getting in the way and offers zero right now. Hoping that changes with him though.

Who says we lose with picking the Cuninghams, Stockers, Dows, Setterfields, Honeys, Owies, etc? Other teams can do it.

We are falling off the pace and it's obvious.

Robert Heatley Stand / Re: Post Game Analysis: AFL 2021 Rd 1: Carlton vs Richmond
Love or hate Murphy I think its time we moved on from him, ditto for Ed Curnow, Betts and probably Casboult(when we get a replacement). Its time to play younger players and look to change things up...vs Richmond it was the same old same old.
We didnt take our chances and fed them with mistakes they lived off, been the same for a while and getting the same results from the same group of players is bordering on insanity.
Play Fogarty in Murphys role and let him develop, bring in Stocker, Honey, Durdin to generate some excitement and find another tall forward/ruck to help TDK and Pittonet.
I think both Murphy and Betts have played one season too many and while you need experience you dont need players who are holding younger players back. Mitchell, Lewis, Hodge were all moved on by the Hawks to allow fresh blood to play.
I'll be saying the same thing about Cripps in a couple of years if we cant win a flag, let him go and lets gets some value for him while we can. Murphy should have been let go when we let Gibbs go, fresh start for him at a contending club and we get some picks/players who might help us more. Watching players just fizzle out like Murphy as one club players is old school thinking and its a professional game where the clubs needs come first.

I agree with all of this Elwood. I too believe we should move on from the guys who have been the 'close enough yet not good enough' types. We need to do what the great clubs and teams do, regenerate and get ahead of the curve. Play the kids at different stages. Get some zip and excitement with this new group as opposed to the blokes who have been a part of the losing Carlton culture in past years.

I'd be looking toward the guys you said such as Stocker, Cottrell, Durdin, Owies, Honey, Philp, Ramsay, Kemp, Carrroll and Parks at different stages when fit.

And, perhaps our ruck/forward due can become both Pittonet and De Koning when TDK is fit.

We have to play Martin the middle more. I see him as our own Shane Edwards from the Tiges and guys like Fogarty and Gibbons challenged to play the Kane Lambert role.

Robert Heatley Stand / Re: Pre-Game 2021 AFL Rnd 1: Richmond vs Carlton.
Like McGovern, Martin is prone to missing games through injury and niggles. I love the way he plays but for me he's still more 'flash' or 'the cream on top'. I'd like to see more from him. He plays the way we want, just need more consistency. I find guys like him and Gov very frustrating with consistency of playing games, fit bodies and consistency of performance at AFL level each week.

If McKay is ruled out along with McGovern and Casboult 50/50, I'd consider a mobile and flexible rotating forward setup. This is where these coaches are separated with their plans and ideas, and ability to motivate.

'If', none of the usual tall forwards are available, along with De Koning, I'd consider Matt Kennedy to play forward with Silvagni. McDonald could be considered also to give Pittonet a rest at times.

Casboult?
Betts?
Newnes?
McKay?

Robert Heatley Stand / Re: Best 22 in 21
I liked the look of Setterfield in the practice match, they used him sparingly but he looks cherry ripe!

I think they tried SPS in the mid-field tagger role before and excluding the bounce he hardly got within a kick of his opponent, he's too slow to keep up with most of them in-between the stoppages when he catches back up to the play. So if he doesn't win the football we are one short in open space and that is a big problem. fwiw, It was nice to see Martin with some run-down tackles when he first arrived, I'd forgotten what they looked like!

Maybe Cunningham needs a tagging role to help him take the next step, opponents will try to break away in heavy traffic but if he learns that gig he could be invaluable as he has the pace needed to run and spread.

I'd take guys like Dow and Cuningham matching up/tagging opposition mids. SPS too but I like his creativeness also.  Martin I like but gee he goes missing a heap, like McGovern.

My fear is we've paid big money for guys who are flash in the pans type without enough regular substance or meat & potatoes types. I find we cannot rely on those two to be consistent enough. I hope we get more out of them as opposed to highly paid forward flanker types. Martin into the midfield I want. At least 50/50 split but would prefer more midfield minutes.

Robert Heatley Stand / Re: Best 22 in 21
I'd play SPS in the midfield and on the wing. If he needs to 'tag' at times then so be it. He's a natural ball winner and I reckon he's become better defensively by playing down back. I think his footy nous, evasive skills and foot skills would be beneficial in the midfield group.

We've got some players to rotate but we desperately need a big break out year ala Jacob Weitering at CHB from 1-2 midfielders such as Walsh, Setterfield Dow, Martin, Cuningham, SPS, Gibbons, Stocker, Fogarty, O'Brien, and Kennedy. A great big 'next step' if you will. Setters took a nice step forward last year as did Walsh. I'd love to hear those two plus Cripps and Williams mentioned as AA squad candidates with guys like Dow, Martin, Cuningham, Gibbons and SPS riding shotgun as big improvers and regular starting 22 in the midfield/wing group. It would mean we are getting plenty out of our underperforming midfield.

Then there's the likes of Philp, Ramsay, Kemp, Cottrell and Carroll who are still very green and developing.

We need predictability and consistency with our players.

Guys like McKay, Charlie C and McGovern are so often injured it's quite ridiculous. De Koning has proven to be a bit injury prone also. Marchbank is another. We have been fortunate with Weitering though.

Robert Heatley Stand / Re: AFL Practice Match 2021 Carlton vs the Drug Cheats
What is the club looking for? Insurance to cover a possible injury to KP stocks or the "best" player in terms of talent who may go on to bigger and better things? I'm not at all sure about that.

That's the question and I don't think the Club knows either.

Perhaps we should hold off adding anyone until mid year, or go 'best available' now and add a more specific required player mid year should be get a LTI.

Robert Heatley Stand / Re: AFL Practice Match 2021 Carlton vs the Drug Cheats
I can’t believe people are talking about adding Moore to the list. He is a DUD full stop. Not a good enough ruck, forward or back even as backup. He played seniors last season and couldn’t get a touch was flicked by Richmond because he wasn’t good enough take the hint “ He’s not AFL standard” Try someone else, anyone else.

Agree. Maybe you should let Nick Austin know. We have four train-on players - Moore, McDonald, Crocker and Maher. The last list spot is likely to come from that four players. I'd be happy to look outside that group myself. I am not a big Callum Moore fan but McDonald is a flake. Paul Bower type very average defender. He's tall but struggles on big forwards and seems to lack awareness, even down back. Crocker is handy and we do have some forwards on our list but I think he is more specialist small/medium forward compared to many hybrid types we have. Maher I don't know much about but we have so many unproven young midfielders on our list that I am unsure we need another. Having said this, if the Club feels Maher is the best candidate for the final position then fine but I think we need some balance here also.
