Robert Heatley Stand / Re: Fixture 2024
My ideal is to play every other side twice.
That's not going to happen with 18-20 sides.
Playing every other side once isn't a bad option to my mind...but the fly in the ointment would be broadcasters and sponsors who wouldn't wear a reduced season

Yes, no doubt that's right. I have the Jerry Maguire approach, which will never fly in a commercial environment. Too many suits and corporate types with their snouts in the trough, who will never accept a reduced pay day.

Opens the door for more football to be played in future.

Players in Europe play 40 games per year and their off season is two months.
We have a 22 game competition with five month off season (too long off season shouldn't be longer than three months).

There is no doubt in my mind that if I was a broadcaster I would demand more content and bang for my buck.

I think the intensity of AFL football is a good deal higher than soccer. I think the season is too long, given the list sizes. I would be either increasing playing lists or cutting the number of games. Based on current list sizes, I would have teams play each other once only, then top four plays finals. Less injuries, less wear and tear, players are fresher for longer, they have longer careers, and the end result is better quality football IMO. I've floated this idea in the past, and it's been about as popular as a severe dose of the clap. Still, i remain undaunted.

I haven't read every post in every thread. I'm wondering if I've missed some happy news related to the Crippa family? Or perhaps I'm mistaken and/or there's nothing official???

There's nothing as yet on the CFC website or the CFC Twitter account. There's a photo from Brownlow night a few weeks ago, and Monique doesn't look pregnant there.

I did notice that Mitch McGovern recently got married.

The conventional wisdom is that you need 28-30 AFL ready players on a list to be a contender. That means that in any premiership team, there will be worthy, deserving players who miss out. I wish it weren't the case, but I can't see any way around it under the current system. Those AFL ready players who are on the margins won't hang around for ever. They will look for more senior opportunity elsewhere. In a very real way you do need to strike while the iron is hot.

That's probably true...
You can hear a Stones song and can tell almost straight away it's the Stones.
It's a sound that's endured over decades.
The Beatles went through such a range of different sounds in the short time (less than ten years) that where together that where they finished up was 'chalk and cheese' to where they started.

The period of time when the Beatles decided to move away from mop top teen sensations, to serious musicians determined to push themselves to the limit, is the most spectacular transformation in pop music history. They were influenced by Bob Dylan's super trilogy of mid 60's recordings. U2 and Radiohead have followed suit and also went through a transformation in their careers.

I too had a listen. Always an admirer of The Beatles (who isn't)  but not a huge fan (prefer the Stones). My opinion is that 'creating' a new song is better than having it left on an unlistenable cassette but it is hardly a great song.

I was interested to hear the other day 2 Brian Johnson ACDC songs with Bon Scott doing the vocals (via AI). Also a bit tinny sounding I thought but I always way preferred Bon vocals. Where will it end? Maybe me on lead vocals...

In a way, I also prefer listening to the Stones, but the two bands are on different planes IMO. The Stones were a great band, but the Beatles changed popular music forever. I think part of the reason the Stones are more user friendly is that they never really stray too far from their roots. They were, as Elvis Costello so wonderfully put it, "rabid RnB evangelists." The Beatles were genre busting, boundary pushing musical geniuses IMO.

Check out the final Beatles video clip, done by Peter Jackson with a lot of AI....  so good....

https://www.msn.com/es-mx/noticias/mexico/the-beatles-now-and-then-official-music-video/vi-AA1jlY2B

Watch it through to the end.....

It's a nice song. Certainly even the "worst" of the Beatles never dips below a certain level of greatness, but I find the production a little jarring. Maybe it's just the shock of the new. Lennon's vocals from 1974, Harrison's guitar parts from 1994, Paul and Ringo from 2023. And they all sound of their time. The bass, piano and drums sound modern, like anything recorded now. I'm glad they did it, but it neither adds nor detracts to my fondness for the Beatles.

I'm not sure what his prophetic track record is like, but it's very much a wait and see for me. I'd be happy with a top 4 finish, happyish with a top 8 finish. I think you need to be around the mark for a few seasons before you can iron out all the kinks. We will need plenty of luck with injuries, and especially with our prime movers Weitering, Walsh, Cripps and Charlie Curnow.

@PaulP, assuming the whole list is fit and available, based on the 2nd half of our 2023 season, can you really see us playing both SoJ and Martin alongside H and Charlie?

I suspect that will look top heavy, and we'll either have SoJ or we'll have Martin, with Motlop, Owies, Cunnigham and another as our rotating smalls.

Personally, we will struggling to lever in the likes of Kennedy, Hollands and Hollands, given Acres is a certain starter. To get them in with Cerra, Walsh and Hewett I suspect means Cripps must at stages rest forward, and that is not going to happen on top of Martin and SoJ.

I can't see it being viable to have Cripps resting forward while SoJ rucks, in my opinion we need our strongest Mid combination in play when our weakest ruck is in the rotation. But then that seems to be punishing the better Mids, why don't they get an easier run with TDK or Pitto?

I would play McKay, Curnow, Martin, Moltop, Owies and Fogarty as my forwards. One of the points I was trying to make is that assuming a fully fit list, the MC will have tough calls to make each and every week. There's plenty that are good enough to be in, but not enough places for them all. As they say, "it's a nice problem to have."

Robert Heatley Stand / Re: Jack Silvagni - The Ultimate Medical Sub
This is an article going back in time, to February of this year.

https://www.afl.com.au/news/878124/a-rucking-dilemma-blues-still-weighing-up-best-mix

The whole article is worth a read, even if it is old. The fact that team balance is important is a given, but there's  fair bit that goes into it, and unfortunately much of the info is not available to us.

.........................The question on Carlton's lips internally as it seeks to decipher its perfect ruck mix for the season ahead is how tall is too tall? Can the Blues play with Pittonet, De Koning and Silvagni, along with key forwards Curnow and McKay, in the same team?...............................

"A lot of it depends on some of their physical characteristics and height is one of them. But speed comes into it, endurance comes into it, agility comes into it, then capacity comes into it," Voss said.

"The capacity for them to be able to play tall or small, they're all factors. One thing we do have on our side when it comes to the front-end is that there aren't many 204cm guys that move like Harry. It's the same with Charlie. The agility and movement and speed are on their side, despite what their height measurements say..............................

If we are at the point next season where a handy player like Jack Silvagni is a sub or on the fringes of the best 22, there's only 2 possibilities IMO :

- the MC is incompetent or corrupt,
- our list is healthy, in form and deep.

There's no doubt in my mind as to the more likely possibility.

Robert Heatley Stand / Re: Jack Silvagni - The Ultimate Medical Sub
This thread was started about 15 months ago, and it's interesting to see how things have changed.

There are, as best as I can tell, two main theories about the ideal sub : one, a fast, burst player, who can take advantage of a fatigued opposition, with pace, chase down and line breaking ability. And two, a utility player, who can play a variety of positions, creating minimal disturbance to structures. The former is more strategic, the latter is more contingency. Jack clearly falls into the latter category. The club generally plays him as 3rd tall or 2nd ruck, and I think Jack Martin and Tom De Koning respectively, are viewed by the club as being ahead of JSOS. And I agree. I read an article where Dermott Brereton stated that JSOS has no real home, and when combined with his limited mobility and athleticism, means he will be down the pecking order IMO. He is undoubtedly a solid handy footballer, but he is being eased out by better options. I think the sub role would suit him to a t.

It is a standard football truism that you need genuine, AFL level players beyond the best 22 to win a flag. This clearly means that in any premiership team, there will be worthy, deserving players that miss out. It sucks, and I wish it were different, but I can't see any other way.

In the overall narrative of our 2024 season, what happens with Jack Silvagni will be very much a minor plot line IMO, but also oddly intriguing.
