Labor oversaw 'holocaust' of jobs: Abbott

    AAPFebruary 12, 2015, 11:44 am

Prime Minister Tony Abbott was met with opposition outrage when he described rising unemployment in the defence industry as a "holocaust of jobs".

Mr Abbott was answering a Labor question about the latest unemployment figures, including 7.3 per cent in the South Australia where defence industry jobs have traditionally been strong.

"Under members opposite, defence jobs in this country declined by 10 per cent," Mr Abbott told parliament on Thursday.

"There was a holocaust of jobs in defence industries."

Mr Abbott subsequently apologised and withdrew the comment. He replaced the word "holocaust" with "decimation".

The Sports Desk / Re: Stosur vs Sheik 2015
He would have a bucket load of money, I doubt it has anything to do with earning a living. Maybe he just loves playing tennis, has anyone thought of that?

Yes Sheik has achieved as much as Stosur. No doubt she has issues in her mind but she's still won grand slam tournament. Been a while since an Aussie girl did that.

The big show... As NWA said "don't believe the hype"

Public Enemy.

But yes I agree. His arrogance is astounding in the way he bats. Surely he must be losing some support within the team.

Assuming everyone is fit I think it's safe to say the below are lock-ins as our best side for the World Cup:

1. Warner
2. Finch
3. Watson
4. Smith
5. Clarke
6.
7. Haddin
8. Faulkner
9. Johnson
10. Starc
11.

At this stage maybe Hazlewood as the third quick but I don't know what to do about 6. Do we play Bailey and get 40 overs from Faulkner/Johnson/Starc and Hazlewood and then another 10 from Watson and Clarke/Finch for a bit of spin? That's probably the way I'm leaning. That gives us plenty of batting with Starc at 10 being more than capable.

I know. I was in Daylesford for the weekend and couldn't believe there was no FTA coverage. And the FFA are trying to promote the game in Aus??

It's quite unbelievable. I'm only a casual football fan, as a result of the delayed telecast I don't care about the tournament now. I would have thought they'd be trying to capture 'fans' like me, especially given it's the off-season for the AFL, NRL etc. Mindboggling to say the least.

I'd like another look at Cowan. Huge a huge summer including a double 150 last game and is batting very aggressively. Remember from our golden era every one of our batsmen were dropped at one stage before turning into absolute superstars. Happy to try Cowan again at 3.

Langer springs to mind. Was quite pedestrian in his first stint but once dropped he turned himself into a more aggressive batsmen and killed it on his recall.

The Sports Desk / Re: Vertonghen's dive, why soccer is the world's most overated sport!
Can't believe anyone could defend diving in soccer. It's like Selwood ducking his head (disgraceful) and the EFC drug scandal (unforgivable). We acknowledge the flaws in our game and attempt to overcome them. Diving in soccer makes the game unwatchable to fringe viewers who are yet to commit to the game.

Selwood ducks his head far more regularly than diving occurs in soccer.

We are not defending diving in soccer.  Its akin to all the things that fall into the category of "playing for a free kick" in either code.

Its part of both codes, and in fact all codes.  You draw the contact and then ensure that contact is noticed.  The end.

Some of it is borderline ridiculous which is a once in a blue moon proposition and that can occur in either code, and I can think of a couple of incidents off the top of my head.  One is Jack Darling going down from a Marcus Davies push to draw a double goal, another is a double goal against Essendon a few years ago, in which Davey got in someone's face, after a goal, was given a little shove, and he went down like someone just shot him, resulting in a goal.  That is ticky touchwood stuff, but the rules are clear.

One thing you will rarely see in soccer is a stuff up of such proportions in massive games like an elimination final.  (in context, this was the difference between winning and losing given the final margin was 3 points and this is the Darling incident I just mentioned).

In any case, you cant condemn a code based on something that doesnt make up a major part of the game.  That would be like turning away from footy based on the contact below the knees rule.

You make perfect sense. You could also include numerous examples based on Hayden Ballantyne as well.

Mighty effort on that last day... especially from Harris.

Can't remember the last time I watched so much cricket when we're not playing in Oz. Still a couple of glaring weaknesses in terms of blokes who shouldn't be in the side but gee Boof is really getting some steel and character into this side. And Michael Clarke continues to grow as a Skipper.

Like?

God help the rest of the world if we ever get all of our quicks healthy at the same time. Can you imagine Johnson, Pattinson and Cummins all firing at once, would be magnificent to watch.

They are sideshow compared to Harris, Harris and Siddle are the reason we had the luxury to give Johnston one last chance which he took. But they are the rock solid foundation that lets the selectors take risks elsewhere.

You cannot have three scatter guns in one attack, you need some marksmen!

Incorrect. Johnson was given one last chance at the Gabba because everyone else was injured. If any of Pattinson, Starc or Cummins was available he wouldn't have been picked. And Cummins isn't a scatter gun.

Declare indeed, should have a bit of juice in the wicket after having the covers on overnight too.

Agree....get them straight in and I think the wicket will play a bit quicker with more bounce.
Bit of luck they lost Steyn but we have had our share of injuries over the journey and deserve some luck.

David Warner would be nearly the form batter in the world.....

Be interested to see how Pattinson goes, will probably leak some runs but will get his share of wickets IMO and could be the man to break the Saffies...

Raining now and it's said to be continuing for up to two hours.  The Skipper may have to think about a declaration.

We only need to draw to move to #2 in the test rankings so if I was Clarke I'd keep going.
Clarke and Boof tend to always play for the win and that's what they should do here. Bugger playing for the draw when you have close enough to 500. Declare now and send them in.

The Sports Desk / Re: 2nd Test : Australia V South Africa @ Port Elizabeth
Finally, the players with poor techniques or composure who looked like world-beaters against an insipid English outfit have been found out under the pressure of some hostile & solid bowling.

I have not rated a lot of the current Test players and for good reason, they just aren't good enough. Mitchell's incredible return to form papered over a lot of those cracks. Under the Yarpies microscope, they have reopened.

Might have to call you flip-flop after your OP.
