Title: AFLW Rd 2: - Carlton vs GWS @ Drummoyne oval
Post by: kruddler on February 03, 2018, 06:42:20 pm
Another Friday night game, this time only on Foxtel @Drummoyne oval.

We travel interstate 3 times this season. Not really a great draw considered you only have 3 or 4 away games and there are only 4 interstate teams.
Anywho, this is our first time travelling and it will be a challenge for the girls.

Be interested to see how many changes we have from last week.

Anyone going to watch this game?

I would like to go, but it is not possible at this point, and I have very little chance of seeing anything on pay TV as we don't have it.
In fact, I'm not sure how I'm going to follow the game this Friday, but I will if I can.

I'm not sure that there will be any changes: depends on the fitness of Arnell, I guess.

We have an ordinary record away from home at this point. It will be good if we can win this one, as a result. We do have a bit of improving to do!

Is Loz carrying an injury? I noticed it wasn't her usual output on Friday night. No disposals and just the 4 tackles.

I reckon maybe Plane out for Keryk. We need help in the middle.

No news from the club about an injury to Arnell.

I'm worried that in a season that sees the opposition younger, bigger, stronger and faster she might have very little gain she can make.

Yep she did Adelaide vs Brisbane on saturday night.

She seemed ok.

Sometimes consistency is hard to come across, and she might just be underdone from a preparation perspective.

I did have another thought which adds a layer of complexity to womens sport, that she could be "up the duff" however, I dont think anyone would risk playing footy of all things if they knew....

It's probably a lower chance in womens footy than some other womens sports, given probably 90% or more of the players are gay...a lot less chance of an unplanned pregnancy. But if that were to happen, I dare say you're right, it's unlikely they'd chance playing a contact sport.

Yeah its hard to know.

Im not really sure, and to be frank it doesnt matter.

If she is right to play, we can only scrutinise her performance.  The fact that shes dropped this week means that she was likely playing under duress last week, and why is something that doesnt matter overly, but it does explain her performance or lack thereof.

It also sheds a bit of light on why we elected to change captain and kept her in as a vice captain.  Arnell may very well be carrying an injury which will hinder her entire season.

Note also the way the teams were organized: the AFL is their 'wisdom' stated that each club must line up like this at the start of quarters and after each goal. It was imposed on them this week in response to our game last week, but the only public comment so far from any club is that they will lay as they will play. If the game is scrappy and congested, so be it. They are out there to win.

Note also that this structure seems to make a mockery of the 16 per side historical structure, where there were no wingers. 6 players must be named in the midfield.

I also wonder just how much of the illness of our coach is coming from the stupidity of the AFL and their impossible demands? I am sure that if the men's coaches had been singled out like Keeping was, that there would be serious ramifications. I know of no coach at male level who would tolerate such interference.

I thought that was how we setup in Rnd 1 anyway.

Last year clubs went with the traditional no wings, this year they have all looked at shifting the numbers elsewhere.

I don't think it will make a smudge of difference!

We have a lightning stoppage. GWS 1.0.6 Carlton 0.4.4. We have dominated apparently the GWS went forward once, got a free kick and kicked a goal.

It's not just the telecast. They've actually stopped the game. GWS were strong early but we were well on top for the last 2/3 of the quarter. Not in front on the scoreboard but a couple of close misses.

....and a girl knocked out.

Even the commentators were laughing when they read out the half time score.

But hey it’s close contest so it’s really exciting ????

If you don't like it why are you watching? You must be enjoying the contest.

It's a new concept. Now the women have their own competition alot more are playing in the junior ranks, many with alot of ability. Over the next 5-6 years will gradually filter through to the AFLW. Some of us can think ahead, others think more simply for the "now". Some of us don't expect instantaneous results, as you'd expect at this point of the competition, other's more simply expect the women's to be superstars the very moment they step out on the ground. I'm sure when Australian rules first began 150 years ago it wasn't too crash hot either.

Vescio gets her first for the game, and year, courtesy of a free.

Blues generally look harder at the ball.

...although GWS seem to look more skilled based on a few good kicks and marks leading into the 3rd quarter siren.

But GWS captain shanks it.

Blues by 17 3/4 time.

Audley, Hoskings, Loynes, Tilly-Rodd  and Brazzale mainley through the midfield with Pound, Davey down back and Harris, Vescio up forward along with Moody, Downie and Sheirlaw rucking.....with a few other names i've missed. Not too many pussy-cats in our group.

Just watch the replay, certainly looks a real bad ankle ligament injury at best and a nasty break at worst. You can see the huge load on the ankle as it rolled over.

That was a huge tackle. Half killed the other girl but the girl landed of Harris's head. Looks like the shoulder hyper-extended when the other girl landed on her. Hopefully Harris is ok.

Scoring was much less of an issue, just that most of them went through for points.

All hope is not lost. My NFL team the vikings lost their most important player after R1. Their next most important player after R4. By the end of the season (R17) they'd finished their best ever season in decades.

All hope is not lost just yet. We still have a good bunch of girls.

The GWS player is a team mate of hers at the Sharks. Would have been distressing for all the players. I felt for Tily Lucas-Rodd too, having to play out the game knowing your girlfriend was off to hospital wouldn’t have been easy.

Definitely doesn’t look good for Bri  :'( What is it with AA defenders at Carlton this year?! That’s seemingly our best player in both the Men’s and Women’s teams out for the season.

Terrible conditions, but poor kicking. Think there was only 1 rushed behind that i can recall of the top of my head.

At least 1 shot hit the post though.

Three shots hit the post that I can remember. Early behinds were all long shots (30+ meters) with a wet ball, one was rushed. Other 'easy' shots were missed after the long break. Should have won by another three or four goals, such was the Blues' dominance.
Vescio 1.3, Stevens 1.1, Loynes 1.0, Brazelle 0.3, Harris 0.2, Gee 0.1, Hosking 0.1, rushed 1

I noticed this lass last week, and have to concur: there is  lot to like about this one. Her attack on the ball was very nice. But she is pretty easy to body out of the way. I think she should be watching vids of Eddie Betts, Jeff Garlett and the like, so she can get the crumbs when we bomb it to the square (which we do).

We probably need to see a bit more...but just watching bits and pieces of a few games over the weekend I reckon one of the aspects of the game that has gone up a notch is the pressure.
Some of the star players aren't being given the same latitude they were last year.

It's a pressure that the women probably haven't experienced before.
Strength and conditioning is obviously an area where the women still lag far behind the men.
The body shapes of some of the women indicate that there is still some room for improvement in fitness.
While in these early stages of the competition size can be an advantage at the contests, there will come a point where fitness and mobility will be far more important and some of the bigger women will need to adapt or disappear from the game.

Short term, this situation will create a problem.
Greater pressure and a lack of strength and conditioning will lead to injuries. Some serious.
The number of these as this season progresses may become an issue, especially if it's the stars of the game that are dropping out.

Good points Lods. The ladies comp is still very much in its infancy, and no doubt there are teething issues and much work still to be done, to make it a better competition for players and fans.

16 tackles to one of the Hosking twins is extraordinary.

Kudos.

I thought that was a typo initially.  That's a phenomenal effort for any player. In fact it probably pips the likes of Mitchell and Zeibell when the timeframe is considered.

Great effort Sarah Hosking

In the men's game, 19 tackles in one VFL/AFL match is the record, held equally by Jude Bolton, Tom Liberatore, and Jack Ziebell.

She would certainly show up some of our blokes.

EDIT : that record was correct as of may 2016.

I'm not sure how much longer the blokes game is Paul. That considered, she must be sticking a tackle very frequently.  Amazing effort.

Yes indeed. For a part time female footballer playing a short format, that's just off the charts. Ridiculously good effort.

The men's games are almost twice as long. The women's quarters are 15 mins with time on only after goals and injuries. So the average quarter is about 18 mins, compared to about 30 for the men.

Davey got all 10 of the coaches votes this week. Takes her to 13 on the year and is sitting =1st in the comp.

She will be missed, and not replaced.

Interesting how she failed to win an MVP nomination, when I think she was clearly the comps best player right up until the moment of her injury, and the coaches seem to agree!

I think the media nominate three players each round, so they do not even have her in the top six!

They've been announcing it after each round on the AFL website, there is a public vote from which three players get the nod. If I understand it correctly, the AFLW Gloria Jeans MVP will be selected from the weekly winners.

Rnd 1;
Molloy 53%
Brennan 25%
Frederick

Rnd 2; (Votes not finalised)
Paxman
Hooker
Kearney

So a popularity contest.

I'll trust our votes, and the coaches votes. ;)

Sort of, I thought it was a bit like Mark of the Year in that it is a vote but who chooses the three options!

Hard to imagine how Brianna hasn't been one of the voting/voted options so far, maybe you need popularity before you become an option and we don't have enough social media numbers following the club.
