 IKON Park at 2:00pm

Northern Blues

B: 34. J Glass-McCasker 31. J Foster 26. M Dick

23P 35. K Declase

This looks like one of our stronger sides for the year, for what it is worth. But more than a few of these guys appear to be on the way out. Still, hopefully they can deliver the goods this week. After all, Boekhorst did last week. I am certain he had never got 30 or more possessions in a game before. In that regard Whiley was a little unlucky.

Footscray Bulldogs

B: 60. A Tashevski-Beckwith 30. J Hamling 36. B Lynch
HB: 31. B Dale 32. K Collins 12. Z Cordy
C: 37. R Smith 51. L Dalgleish 65. J Russell

23P: 63. N Ryan

Minson usually plays well against Wood, but so usually did Orren Stephenson. Jordon Russell has played extremely well against us in recent times.

I always like this graphic. With Carlton playing on Saturday it is a fair bet that we will actually line up something like this, for a chance. The 3 emergencies will probably go to Sydney - why not when the game is on at so early on Saturday? But they will want to play om Sunday.

Jaksch springs the counter, Everitt splits two Dogs to mark and McKay does the rest. #WeMarchNorth #PJVFL"

Bloody freezing at Ikon.  Jones has worked hard both in front of goals and up and down the ground.  Everitt has shown more interest here than he did for weeks in the ones.  McKay is getting to contests but in a pack situation is very easily worked off the ball. He has a permanent miss match in height but they are not exploiting it. KJ has done some nice first effort things but is still a spectator if it doesn't come off. Rainbow is also showing it but down back. Fingers have now got frost bite!!

Bloody cold out here at PP. Camedown to have a look at Big Harry, has shown some good signs, takes the ball at highest point which will hold him in good stead in the years to come, needs to out on a bit of beef.
Nice to see JR still running around for the Dogs, still goes ok????

Liam Jones obviously realizes that there is a forward place up for grabs in the ones next week. Really putting in a solid performance.

Liam Jones has taken two great pack chest marks to start the third qtr and nailed the first goal of the qtr, Blues by 22.

Hopefully as a 2nd key forward. Will struggle like everyone else if he's the only one.

A good win after being challenged.  Whiley is a ball magnet at this level but just can reproduce in the big league. Jones really staked a claim for next week with a solid effort.  Big H kicked 3 goals but let's hope we don't hear the calls for promotion because he's still a long way off.

Why???  He's not ready!!  Play Jones before him or even Everitt that's why they are there.  To allow the kids to develop. He kick one of his goals from a contested mark, the others were gimmies.

Of course he'll play this year. You can bet he'll experience senior footy before the year's out to give him a taste and a bit of experience. At that time of the year it's not going to exactly hurt anything. He'll play against Brisbane or Essendon.

Cunningham didn't light up the park, I thought Rainbow showed a bit, McKay was ok (lacked a tank to be expected) but he's tall and with some meat on him, he'll be good, the big American was not out of place (kicked a crunch goal) Gowerscwas solid again and should be given a chance of a place becomes available. KJ looked like he belonged this week, so maybe this is his level??

Some talls take longer than others, which is probably Jaksch case. If talls are playing good VFL footy they often take the step eventually. He'll find a niche in defence eventually. Then as he further develops he'll be a player who we can swing forward if needed.

Peter Jackson VFL 2016
Northern Blues   4.3  6.4  8.8  11.11 (77)
Footscray Bulldogs   1.5  3.7  5.9  10.11 (71)

I gather it was pretty windy and one end had the advantage. Still, we were in front all day, except for a moment or 2 in the last quarter. In the circumstances, it was an excellent result!
Just hope the guys at the ground can thaw out before next week's game. :)

GOALS: L. Jones 3, McKay 3, Jaksch 2, Korcheck, Kerbatieh, Declase.

I think Liam Jones has to get a call up for next week going on this.

DISPOSALS: Whiley 31, Wilson 28, Tutt 28, Dick 24, Everitt 20, Strachan 19.

Good to see Everitt getting something of the ball. He does seem to fire up against the Dogs.

I'm afraid Clem is definitely not going to be with us next year. I guess he was something of a speculative pick, but we don't seem to do well out of those sort of picks any more.
We need to replace him with a REAL small forward.

Yes. he needs to come in for Charlie Curnow, so that there will be 2 marking forwards. Then we have to get Levi back into some sort of form and confidence. Not sure how we are going to do that in 7 days. :(

There was a time when we were pretty good at it. Guys like Houlihan and Hammill were excellent late picks. However, since we institutionalized the idea under WH, we lost the knack. We had a decade of failure with that type of pick, especially when our last pick was still in the 30's. I wanted us to get Swallow, who went well after our last pick that year. Any guesses as to who we actually selected? I'll give you a hint: his old man played for a couple of clubs including Richmond.
I could Raso: his pick was very late. Others.....

That sort of ide did not seem to be part of the Silvagni lexicon: we didn't have a live pick later than the 20's, and the one we did have was Jack Silvagni. After a decade of missing out, I could live with that.

IIRC - In J Waite's first season, he was the only player on the list who did not play a senior game - because he was not ready. That sort of judgement should apply here.

I believe they made a promise to his dad at the time that they wouldn't play him no matter what happened that year.

That differs to what Bolton said in the pre-season this year...."There is no ceiling on what you can achieve this year. If that is to play senior football, then so be it"

Bolton also made it clear at the time that players weren't entitled to games.

He recently (on SOJ's debut) clarified his position on playing our youngsters:

Quote
“This is our draft class. We would like to play them, just like Jack did today.

“Provided they have got game time under them and are not at risk and their form is sound, we will have a look at them.”

That suggests that McKay and Cuningham will run around in the VFL for a while longer.  Hopefully, they will tick the boxes for a senior game before the end of the season.

That was then, this is now. Not interested in 2002.

If he's showing something, which he is, 5 goals in 2 goals shows that, he'll benefit from a feel of senior footy and it's requirements to carry into the pre-season. Somewhere around rounds 21-23, what the hell have you got to lose at that time of the year, even if it's only one game.  He can only gain, surely, even if he doesn't get a kick. Nothing like a bit of experience and important for development. Be brainless not to give him a feel of AFL footy as things are currently. Not as if he's struggling at VFL level. Same goes for Cunningham. One game, whats the issue.

McKay should and will play senior footy. The problem right now is his aerobic capacity. Forwards must also act defensively these days and if he hasn't got the tank, we get exposed. Maybe another 2 games in the VFL and then he's in for the last 3 games.

Bloody good effort from the NBs, this mob has had the wood on us for a while now and when I say they have the wood on us... they've been pounding us! Yes, they might be a few blokes out but so have we.

Would have loved to have been there but busy in SpannerTown (Canberra) on work. Colder than a politicians promise here, but then Melbourne's not much better. (Really pretty driving in, Spanner).

Be interesting to see who comes in for Charlie... between Jaksch, Jones and Everitt. Bearing in mind we're up against the Dawks you might want someone with a little mongrel for the contest which would favour Jones. Of course McKay is a chance too... Gorringe?

You'd think that Whiley would be a monty for Kerridge even if Kerridge comes up okay.

Look for Hisham Kerbatieh's snap near the end of the video. THAT is the sort of thing we want to see in the seniors. It was why we recruited Gallucci: pity he played so little. I would rookie Kerbatieh. But that is me: our recruiters have had different opinions in the past. Caleb Daniel comes to mind..... :)

Why???  He's not ready!!  Play Jones before him or even Everitt that's why they are there.  To allow the kids to develop. He kick one of his goals from a contested mark, the others were gimmies.

2 gimmes yesterday win the game. Buddy had 3, but usually the smart hard working footballers get them... Coincidence?

Not at all. Good positioning is good football.

Bloody good effort from the NBs, this mob has had the wood on us for a while now and when I say they hav, they've had around a 10 goal turn around the wood on us... they've been pounding us!

I read somewhere that NB's were previously beaten by 10 goals.
Like our seniors (9 at least, but for a certain free to Phillips that was overlooked. Would have been 10 - AND we'd have drawn with a top side), there's been an incredible improvement against the respective sides. That's just incredible whichever way you look at it.

Go Blues

Jones was good; plenty of his trademark chest marks but some nice overhead marks too.

Sounds really promising, specially as our drafted forward stocks are jinxed this year and unlikely to get a good run at it. Just the same, we need the more experienced forwards to at least take the heat of the best defenders. What I've seen (limited) of the Jones boy, suggests his composure, marking, and kicking for goal is pretty solid. For mine, it's more his reading the play and resultant mistiming that needs developing, if that's possible. Whoever we bring in, Levi needs a hand. After young Charlie went down, he was back to attracting more defenders than he could reasonably compete against. That must get very frustrating I imagine...
Happy for Jones to get a call up.

Sadly Jones is irrelevant in the grand scheme of things. Great VFL player who will never make the grade. Harry is just biding his time.

Clem is on borrowed time alongside Foster and Dick.

Everitt and Tutt are gone.

Jaksch will probably be given more time.

Bring in Everitt to preserve his trade value.

That's right and that's why he should be maintained and played because Harry will be good, but not yet. Jones is the stop gap, like a number of others who will be superseded, but not yet.

Put Big Harry on the MCG and give him a taste - if he gets 5 touches whats the big deal thats what Walker and Everitt were dishing out anyway....and now thats what Big Cas is dishing out now.

Seems that the MC are very reluctant to play Jones or KJ except as last resorts. Be interesting to see what happens this week.

While it would be good to see both Mckay and Cunningham run out in the seniors this year it does run the risk of putting a young player who might not be physically ready in the game. Both have had injury riddled seasons and with the added pressure of the AFL you'd want to be sure they're ready. They may get some good development out of playing, but with where they're at in their careers they'll benefit more from an injury free preseason that allows them to hit 2017 at their best.

Describing Jones as a great VFL player is generous - he is an honest trier at VFL and AFL levels.

If Jack Silvagni can get a game...and assuming no other injury concerns....then McKay and Cunningham should be given a taste.

Korchek had a pretty quiet day: Minson ruled the rucks from the stats. However, his only mark and kick really counted! Nothing like having an impact! :)
5 possessions for Clem Smith. :( He got senior games last year. Doesn't look like it at the moment.
Kerbatieh had a quiet one: 10 disposals only, but again, one that really counted.
