We've a generation of AFL industry working against us, all the key people in the industry now in their 40s, 50s and 60s think their own failed careers are all due to our TPP ...
I agree that the salary cap punishment has been more impactful and longer lasting than most people realise. I would have thought one generation (i.e. roughly 20 years) would usually be enough to purge all residual baggage and start afresh but it’s a good point you make - football does not follow the same natural cycles and rhythms as some other streams of life. Having said that, we haven’t really helped ourselves and I don’t look kindly upon those who always play the “victim” card.
The whole club has that “woe is us” mentality which is only magnified when the media hacks join in with their patronizing tone. How often during the telecast yesterday did BT ask his fellow commentator, “For how much longer are Carlton supporters going to accept these type of losses?”? Oh I don’t know Brian - for another 6 years, 3 months and 3 weeks. WTF?!
Been reading the usual threats from people not renewing memberships. Can’t say I blame them. I’ll be reconsidering but it’s more due to my age and the pandemic. Can’t believe we have record membership numbers. If only our football operations/fitness/recruiting/coaching departments could attract the same caliber of personnel as the marketing department!
Not sure I'd agree with the media assessment, he's not polled heavily so far in his career, his game style doesn't suit and the Brownlow often goes to run and carry types that get noticed in the clear! In 2019 he won the Rising Star and only polled 6 votes, he probably had an even better year last year and only got 8 votes!
Oddly, I won't be surprised to find Cripps out polls him ...
Tend to agree. He’s so unobtrusive. Doesn’t remonstrate, doesn’t argue, doesn’t overcelebrate, hasn’t dyed his hair.
Just.plays.brilliant.footy.
Mind you, he’s got more of a chance now than if he’d played a few years ago.
But, he is still best 22. Still provides polish that we sorely lack. His ability to kick a goal out of nothing, or to be a crucial link in a centre clearance that actually leads to something, or to be clean when others are fumbly are what we desperately need.
We’re talking about Murphy, right? Marc Murphy? As in, Marc with a ‘c’?
Levi's aggression is artificial, it doesn't come naturally to him and when Brisbane lifted intensity and aggression he retreated.
I’ve never seen a guy so disheartened when beaten for the ball. His whole body slumps in resignation. And you’re right - body on body work doesn’t come naturally to him, his timing is all off. When Neale outmarked him the commentators pointed out the kick was to the wrong side of Casboult (we are very poor in this regard). So maybe it’s a combination of poor positioning (should have done the quick peel off 360 pirouette and emerged on Neale’s right side) AND lack of strength through the hips?
But then, when the poor guy does show some genuine aggression a la that perfect tackle, he gets pinged.
I want to highlight a piece of play that some would classify as a “fail” inasmuch as we lost the initiative and turned the ball over, but I saw something else.
... slick chain of handballs along the wing to half forward flank with Walsh the link man ... Owie was next in line for the receive and you could almost see Walsh’s body language willing his teammate to run to the right space, but Owie didn’t quite ‘get it’ (fair enough) and in holding on to the ball for a micro second too long Walsh was tackled and penalised.
Demonstrated, for me, Walsh’s: a) awareness and footy smarts. Probably the best reader of the play in our team, and; b) leadership and selflessness. He could have chosen to throw the ball onto his boot but was willing to trust the first gamer.
10 players with less than 10 possessions. These players remind me of some guys I work with. They turn up most days, accept a pay check every week, but they don’t actually DO anything. Sam Walsh the exception tonight.
I’m gutted, really thought we’d turned the corner and would win easily after that first half.I knew Collingwood wouldn’t stop tho, they are more experienced and hardened.
And so did the pampered s0ftcock bed wetters who get paid over $200k per year. Memo to CFC recruiters - when you’re scouting for players please watch carefully how they handle defeat. Do they HATE losing? Like, REALLY hate losing? Pay special attention to that player who is pissed to let a late goal through even though they’re 20 goals up. If they take it in their stride and are happy to run around showing off their muscles and perfect skin, please move on and let someone else draft them.
Once again we got to 9 (10?) points up but just couldn't get THAT goal. Instead, it was a series of fumbles, poor decisions, and loose checking which finally got Coll'wood the goal which put a spring in their step and the rest was miserably predictable.
Had everything to play for today so I'll never understand the mentality or psychology of this bunch.
Teague gets a 2 out of 10 today.
The only positive is that we're a game closer to seeing a few players give it away ... I hope.
Agree. Umpiring was fair and consistent. In contrast to the WCE game, where #22 cost us. I'm still smarting over that 😠
Umpires A
I’m wondering if the Eagles game will come to be seen as a low point which simply won’t be tolerated anymore. In fact, wouldn’t surprise me if even the Carlton hating AFL execs looked at that highlight package and decided “... enough is enough. I know we instructed the umpires to always favour the non-Carlton side but this time they’ve gone too far”.
Well there's the argument in a nutshell. You can't quantify "hurt factor", maybe DE approximates it. If you get it, to be effective you have to use it properly....moving to the the advantage of the team mate/team.
My dad drilled it in to me that the best players don’t waste the ball. And that’s why I’d be ok if Fyffe got the 3 Brownlow votes ahead of, say, Curnow.
