I was mentally exhausted after that game. Six and a half goals down, should have won by five, then the umpires used the Carlton rule where they have to give an absolute shocker to the opposition in front of goal or miss a blindingly obvious one to us, fortunately the guy missed. Looked like his back foot slipped as he was kicking.
Other than Newnes, no one can kick the ball more than 35 meters in our forward line. Murphy, Fisher, SPS & Owies all couldn't make the distance running into the goals. I am really concerned by McGovern. Going forward if I was to chose our forward line I would have McKay, C.Curnow, J.Silvagni, Martin, Fisher, Cuningham and Gibbons, he wouldn't be there. I was willing to give him a pass last year after breaking a bone in his back but there has been a real lack of intent this season.
While Walsh was really good last night, a couple of his decisions were very poor. He should have hand balled the ball to SPS in the third quarter who would have either drawn the Swans player or SPS would have run the ball out of defence. His decsion to kick the ball to Cottrell who was out of position to take it cost us a goal. Walsh also should given the ball to Owies who would have been able to drive it into the F50, instead he held onto the ball and he got run down. It was like against Melbourne, his poor decisions in the last quarter cost us a chance to win that match. The kid is only 19 and obviously has confidence in his own ability, but he has got to learn to temper his ego and do the simple things well.
If we don't make the finals, which is likely, it will be because of the Hawthorn game and the Melbourne game. We were unlucky against Port but we were lucky against Freo. If we are able to kick one more goal a match and restrict our opponents by one goal, we will be well in the top eight. If we are able to improve by net one goal a quarter, we will be in the top four.

Gibbo for Cuners.

kennedy for that #11.
Finals, then 4 in a row!

We just can't seem to get all 22 humming along and contributing. Last night showed why I have been saying McGovern needs to GTFO of our club.  Ditto Cunningham. People going on about SPS's game, pfft, he can go also.
Cameron Bruce also needs to go, we need a fwd line coach that has some semblance of a clue and that can introduce a system that our "football mental" lightweights can cope with. This year is shot but for FFS, get a specialist goal kicking coach back at the club. Sav, Fev, Dunstall, someone that again has some idea of how to teach all our guys how to kick a football from a set shot.
I turned it off after they kicked the 6th as it was just too hard to watch. Taken was on, at least I know Liam Neeson shoots straight. I found out Carlton won via text so I watched the game from that point on. Showed some ticker to get back from 6.5 goals down, never should have got in that predicament in the first place. Can't help but be negative after that, sorry.

Blame COVID for the forward line structure. Forward line needs to connect with the midfield to function properly otherwise it's difficult for any Forwards Coach. Hard to structure unless you're connecting with your mids. Issue is there's not alot of training sessions and mostly you can only train with 8 at a time so that connect becomes alot more difficult.  For that reason the season has favoured established sides with highly, well-versed, entrenched game styles where you are predictable to your teammates. We've done ok considering.

McGovern won't be going so be best be getting himself in shape and not waste our time. No-one is taking up that contract. Much easier work for him as forward at Adelaide.

EDIT: Just noticed McGovern's contract runs out this year. We took up the rest of his Adelaide contract. Probably we won't delist him but her certainly won't be on the same dollars.

On SEN this morning Sam McClure (?) indicated that McG initially signed for two years, I almost drive off the road when I heard that,  surely that can't be right.

If so,  it's so long, don't let the door hit your ass on the way out.
DrE is no more... you ok with that harmonica man?

Sps played his best game for the year.  Lots of critical contests.
Indeed. An excellent game and really provided some run from defence.

Gov may possibly get another contract but on much reduced pay with heavy emphasis on performance targets. I don't think he is what we need atm but that is what is more l likely to happen than him being shown the door.

Im tipping Gov will take up much of this forum in the coming months, there will be some firey debates I reckon.

Do we really think Teague will cut his boy McGovern loose or give him a thin contract...doubt it, unless Liddle/Lloyd
pull rank . If he gets a performance based contract he will starve to death and have to go on Jobseeker....

I want to highlight a piece of play that some would classify as a “fail” inasmuch as we lost the initiative and turned the ball over, but I saw something else.

... slick chain of handballs along the wing to half forward flank with Walsh the link man ... Owie was next in line for the receive and you could almost see Walsh’s body language willing his teammate to run to the right space, but Owie didn’t quite ‘get it’ (fair enough) and in holding on to the ball for a micro second too long Walsh was tackled and penalised.

Demonstrated, for me, Walsh’s:
a) awareness and footy smarts. Probably the best reader of the play in our team, and;
b) leadership and selflessness. He could have chosen to throw the ball onto his boot but was willing to trust the first gamer.

Bravo Sam Walsh.

While there's any sort of doubt on Curnow getting back fully fit next year, McGovern is probably saved....but apart from that, he's a complete waste of space. If Kennedy is fit, get him in this week....he was in good form prior to the injury and was going forward, taking marks and kicking goals.

That draft with Dow/O'Brien was a disaster until you scroll down and see the pick used to get TDK.....the kid is going to be a jet for us and agree...him with Casboult as back up ruck/forward is probably the best set up.

Walsh destined for AA at some point in the future.

And don't tell me Crippa wouldn't have enjoyed that big banana goal.....would've been keen to show the digits to that flog Cornes.

But that said, giving up 7 straight goals off the mark to a team well below us on the ladder is unacceptable and it's become a disturbing trend under Teague....the inability to play 4 quarters of footy....or play okay footy and just not convert.

😆 It'll help to keep his weight in check.

The gov stunk it up again and is badly out of form. He should be dropped for Kennedy.

Even so. He's a good player when in form. I haven't given up on him yet.
He needs some time in the Two's to get his form and match fitness back. See him lead up and get some easy marks would be the best thing that could happen for him.
Interesting Question: do the twos play again this year?
I hope so.

Well at least that will help his skin folds.
In all seriousness, he has alot of work to do to convince us fans he is worthy of a contract. I would guess Teague's patience is wearing thin, mates or no mates.

Don't mind that Iaj.   I was looking for someone to blame last night.   Barker (Stoppages), Bruce (Forwards) or Stanton (Midfield and Transition) or a combination of all.

We need to get the ball in the hands of better users.     Need O'Brien to come on.

Martin is going to be a massive lose.   He is so important to our structure.  For his size he has a great set of hands.   8 marks from 49% game time.   He links up so well between defense and attack.    We really have no one else who can do what he can do.

McGovern's night:
23 metres gained
(crickets)
1 kick
(crickets)
4 handballs
(crickets)
2 tackles
(crickets)

He had a shocker, no two ways about it.
I wouldn't be giving him away for nothing: we spent to much money getting him. But he needs time to get his game right, to start holding his marks, especially.
