The protest yesterday in Melbourne was illegal.  The opposition leader is in a dilemma.  Do I come out and condemn the protest and those that attended and lose more support among our supporter base?  Or do I stay silent, inferring support of an illegal activity.  If I support the action and am a leader, should I have attended?

As he has stayed silent, does he support the action?

The only thing that might save us from 12 goal defeat is Giants don't really have much to play for.   Our motivation may be higher  but we don't have the talent on the park.

Good luck & thanks to Eddie & Levi.

There is groundswell that Teague is done - based on fact or fiction, I don't know. .  Thankfully we will know soon.   How they announce the decision will affect my membership and whether I just follow Waverley Blues next season.

Yep.  And as Thry pointed out, these lockdowns are becoming much harder to cope with - his feedback from friends and colleagues is much the same as mine.

It is an abject failure of our politicians - particularly Feds.  National Cabinet is a ruse to deflect responsibility from Feds and force it to the states.  This is only going to have the states go political for their own survival - which they have done, to the detriment of the country.  The bun fight is ludicrous.  I don't care who is responsible (ultimately) for quarantine or securing vaccines.  Just get it done.  Don't market it, don't grandstand, just do it.  Be consistent, show us that the country is working together and give us solutions.

What is it that we have to do to 'learn to live with it'?  Wear masks - half the pickles don't anyway.  Socially distance - half the pickles don't anyway.  Restrict some elements of movement - half the pickles don't anyway.  How did Delta get to Vic?  Pickles in NSW that didn't do the right thing.  They are only randomly enforceable laws.

I'm jack of it - yet I'm also very lucky - I haven't suffered any financial set back, haven't lost any work or reduced hours (they have actually increased significantly, but I don't bill the extra).  I have lost some social contact, but that doesn't phase me too much.  The kids are starting to suffer from losing the social contact and extra curricular activities, the Mrs is taking 1/2 days annual leave, so she can help with school.  My full sympathies go to those that are suffering mentally, socially and financially.

Since 1965 Carlton has had 19 coaches (includes two stints by Jeza and Parkin).  That is under three years a coach.

Barassi was appointed coach in 1965.  He lasted 7 years (to 1971).  Parkin in his second stint went from 91-00 - 10years.  That's 17 years for two coaches.    Take these off and we get 17 coaches in 39 years.  Less than 2.5 years per coach!  (Does include '78 where there were three coaches).  Got this from Blueseum.  A curiosity is it lists both Nicolls and McKenzie as coaches from 72-75.  40 coaches since 1902 - three years per coach.

I don't really know the history of the 60s and 70s, but the Carlton way that I grew up with was to buy success - particularly in the 80s and 90s.  There was the odd developed player, but not many.  We know how this ended in 2002.

Have we actually learnt anything from the draft era - that we actually have to work hard and invest in the coaches and development of players?  It is a whole of club approach needed, not an appoint one person who will fix it all.

(While I was typing - a couple of posts have covered some of this)

Robert Heatley Stand / Re: Post Game Passion; AFL Rd 22: Carlton vs Port Adelaide
Why did I think we would get smashed today?  Port have big bodies where it counts.  We had no real tall forwards - Charlie is 3 games in after a couple of years out, Cas is still injured (it seemed) and never been a great player anyway.  Losing Jones upsets the balance in the backline.  Not having Cripps is a big body.  TCK isn't big enough to take on Lycett.   I had said to my wife that a good result will be 12 goals.  Port aren't a team to have Honey, Durdin, Kemp make a debut at once.

The first quarter and a bit to get 22 up was pretty exciting, although we were still 2.6 at 1/4 time.  We got the jump on Port.  Keeping the way we were playing was going to be impossible.  The commentators mentioned Wines/Boak, someone like that going into the middle, which helped them turn things around.  Who did we have in our team that we could flick around to make a difference on the ball?  We barely had enough to get four in the centre bounces.

What would the cohesion of that team be?  We can play the same style with our best 22 on the ground, but the skill level is lower, so it can't work as well.  We all know that we don't have great depth.

Missing Harry, Cripps, Pittonet (against the bigger bodies), Jones, SOS has to make a difference to the side - they give structure and or effort.

In the last quarter, TDK (knackered) half jumped early, the tap that Port got straight to their mid was hilarious it was so easy (not a dig at TDK, just a description).  TDK is cooked for the year.

The commentators mentioned a few outs in the first quarter when we were going well, but forgot about them later and made no excuses (which is the way it should be for them).  Tiges are going great at the moment with their injuries.  WB couldn't handle a forward out.

Who was available that wasn't injured?  Fogarty, Cottrell, Carroll, Parks, Ramsay.  None of whom would have made much difference, or come in ahead of Cas, McGovern - needed some size (that we didn't have against North).  We wouldn't have beaten any team today.

Much has been made of closing the losing margin under Teague, with a generally more attacking game plan.  Every coach has had big losses, where they just can't stop the opposition.

How many games does the core of a  team need to play together to become a good team?  Ours wouldn't have many.

The board is sitting on a report - great that there weren't any spills and take the shine from Murph - I hope that they look at the report, take their time to digest it, then act appropriately.

I really feel for Teague.  Whatever the decision of the board is it is.  For me, how they explain and execute their decision is key.

What toll does it have on players - the coach is surely part of the decision to commit and sign.  Why wouldn't players just play for $$ if there is no commitment by the club.

I feel for Murph - although it isn't the first time he's played in a much depleted line up.  I've enjoyed the CFC articles,  stories,  interviews and highlights this week.

I hope the boys put in and don't get disheartened when we're getting belted.

Sorry - I can't share the optimism of a few!

Robert Heatley Stand / Re: Tasmania - League expansion or relocate/JV for a club
Because the fixture isn't even,  conferences can be hidden within it.   Eg every team once and then divide last years ladder into three and each group of six play each other twice.

I can't imagine conferences given a run.  Clubs already have a lot of influence in the fixture, and it seems to be written to maximise $$, not fairness.

There would be a huge bun fight for lower attendance clubs to have the bigger ones in their division.

They have five months from 31 October (EOFY) to hold the AGM.   When do you think they should hold it?  Jan 6th when everyone is on holidays?  You're jumping at shadows on this.

Having a quick look at some previous AGM dates:
25/2/2019
24/2/2020

Let's look at a few practicalities:
Accounts:  They will take time to finalise and then prepare for audit.  Depending on their complexity and any information required by third parties (eg re-valuations) let's say this could take 6 weeks.

Audit:  Auditors would have started their prep in Sept/Oct, however, onsite and actual audit could take 3-4 weeks - depending on complexity.

That's 10 Weeks - say 14th December.  This process is also assuming that in the period, the Board has signed off on the accounts to recommend to the members.

Annual Report needs writing.  This will be in progress while the audit is taking place, however, numbers can't be added until the audit is complete.

Annual Report needs to be finalised and printed.  (yes, there is a reduction in how many are printed, but I am sure they would still need to do some, as it has to be available).

Need to send AGM notices with 21 days notice to members with the annual report and AGM agenda.

This takes us to January.

Melbourne is on holidays until school goes back.

Sometime in Feb is a practical time.  Look at the timing of listed companies AGM's as a comparative.  When was the last AGM held in July for a 30 June year end?

Must admit that I'm a little bit toey in anticipation of the board meeting outcomes today.

I must admit to feeling a bit shattered yesterday with the new lockdown.  While knowing how we are vs the third world, we live in our world and the attached circumstance - our emotions and concerns about our situation are still valid.

There is a huge cost to these lockdowns as has been pointed out before - mentally, socially and economically.  The cost to the hospitality industry of continually having to throw out stock that will go off, the effort and energy of having to cancel and re-schedule anything social and celebratory multiple times takes its toll.

Thanks Thry, for adding your coping mechanism and outlook.

What does 'learning to live with Covid' mean?  If there is a better way than lockdowns, what is it?  The plan to move on from Covid has been announced by the Government (they are good at announcements...) - is it enough for right now?
