Title: Round 18 Carlton vs. North Melbourne Pre Game pronouncements!
Post by: crashlander on July 26, 2015, 09:26:43 pm
Next Saturday night we have the chance for a little bit of redemption: we play North Melbourne at Etihad.
Chances are that we will loose: we have a huge way to come back from with a minimum of talent and confidence on the park. However, I do expect a better performance.
In many ways I would love to give it to North: they have been very vocal lately, claiming we do not deserve Friday Night games and that they do. I find this faintly absurd. It assumes the AFL can redirect the draw when it sees one team performing below expectations and another performing above expectations. I have real problems with this. Be that as it may, it would make them shut up if we could cook their finals' goose for them.
It would also give us a little something after they stole Waite from us for no compensation.

As I mentioned earlier, it would be a very low probability event if we could stuck it up the Road - Kills, but hope springs eternal.  ::) ::) ::)

We must be reasonable chance to get one or 2 players back. Certainly we have some underachievers who need more time in the VFL before their inevitable delisting.  ;D ;D >:D

Wood has to come back in, we have been very poor without him all be it he is no champion player but with Goldstein tearing it up I think we need to give Kruezer some support so he can be used in other areas to give us an edge.
North are not as physical as Hawthorn and lack that intimidation factor that made us look like school kids vs men on Friday night so I expect a decent showing and more goals kicked. North will probably win given they have more to play for and I expect Barkers orders are to develop youth and not worry about the result so I am thinking about 3-5 goals as the winning margin..

I would hope that Wood would be available. He gives us a good contest in the ruck.
It is true that Goldstein has been the source of most of North's glory in recent times: he needs to be controlled.

At the moment I would be happy if we stay 3-5 goals from the Roos. I expect us to lose by something more along the lines of 10 goals. We lack run without Armfield in the squad. Yarran just isn't pulling his weight. That leaves too much work from Tuohy and Docherty. Missing Judd and Carrazzo hasn't helped us much either.

Granted that winning more than 2 more games is contra - indicated. However, I don't think anyone expects us to win. The coach definitely wants us to produce more than we are presently producing.

Yes, Captain Crash, hope does spring eternal...

I'm not at all pessimistic about this game upcoming game against the Kangabies. I expect us to make a good account of ourselves.

I heard JB say at the post match media conference that he thought the blokes went into their shells somewhat against the Dawks, well, I thought he also went into his coaching shell a little as well. Seemed that our whole approach was to minimise the damage.

We're likely to get Walker and Graham back and I pray that Jaksch comes in for Jones or Wood comes in for Jones. Listened to Cam Mooney, who has first hand experience of working with Jones, and he said he couldn't believe it when he heard that we recruited him... went on to explain how frustrating he was to work with.

Yea,  I detest this lippy, overated mob but we don't have the personnel or mindset to beat them.  I would be annoyed to see us get physically worked over by this mob, who are deadest pretenders IMO.

North by about 6 but I want to see some spirit.

Might give this one a miss - don't like North much - might watch from the comfort of home. It was a very very bleak, miserable and late Fri night out last week.  :(

I reckon we will win this one, simply because we shouldnt.

North always fail in these circumstances.  They fail to show up.

We are not the only club in the AFL with mental demons.

How's my form for choosing games........actually coming over for this one from the deepest south......with a North supporting mate (and 3 others)
And even he's resigned to a lack of interest as he originally assumed that Harvey would be playing his 400th this game.  He figured that there was no way he'd play the game against Brisbane at the Gabba !!.

So...........I wonder....is it poor form to leave him there & head straight to the pub at half time ?

We most definitely could win this if our passengers in Yarran and Hendo would just put in. Oh and don't get me started on the backwards crap.

It's deliberate.

Annoying, but deliberate.

The backline will start to crumble now (as it did on Friday) as they realise the rest of the year is about them being placed under pressure deliberately.

Hope they realise the risk they are taking.

Brisbane are in on the act as well.

I'm just wondering how many more #1 and first round draft picks we'll actually need before we become genuinely competitive?

We definitely need to start using our draft picks more wisely and to better develop the players we do draft.

I think kruddler did a count, and (if my memory is correct) came up with 16 first round picks on our list (maybe this included Lucas and Judd, I'm not sure). If this figure is correct, and even if the number is 14 (minus Judd  + Lucas), it's a pretty high number.

How does this compare to other teams ?

It's staggering to think some people actually believe we still need more.

Ziebell, Dal Santo and Swallow are in excellent form, Goldstein is dominating, Petrie, Waite and Brown up forward are too much for us to handle and Lindsay Thomas hasn't kicked a goal for a month but usually slaughters us.
We'll need a miracle to get within 10 goals.

My hope is that our coaching staff go into this game with a more offensive and bold mind-set.

If we go into this game with a 'minimize the loss' mentality then it will become a self fulfilling prophecy - the loss will happen.

We can win this.

We are a strange club. We can suddenly put the wind up the opposition as the two South Australian sides found. Hopefully that Carlton fronts up although we are down alot on manpower.

The Roos won't let this slip. They'll be looking to consolidate their postion in the top eight.
They 'll come to play and will be very hard to beat. It will get ugly.
Just hope the boys put in a strong competitive effort and have a real go. That's all we can ask anything more is a miricale.
Ciao

Smith shows some spark and he's only 19, I think there's something to work with there.
Liam Jones eh?
Dropped after a string of poor performances, 7 unspectacular weeks in the VFL, recalled for one game and another poor performance then dropped again, two years to run on his contract.
At least he didn't cost us much I guess.

What ever Jones is being paid, he is costing us too much.

So is Watson, and Warnock, and Ellard, and another dozen spuds on our senior list.
We recruited Jones because we have no forwards and couldn't afford Franklin, Boyd or anyone else decent, assuming anyone decent would want to play for us of course.
I know a lot of Footscray supporters and none of them were sorry to see him go, sometimes the people running the show probably should just ask the punters.

We should have come up with an alternative set up rather than getting a dud, hoping he will turn into a solid player and then banking on it. List clogging and culture killing in one fell swoop.

I reckon Liam Jones has the tools to be a solid AFL key forward, and will do it in the second half of his career.

It was a bit of hit and hope but I think it was a calculated risk that hasnt worked yet.

We will have a better idea after a couple more years.

Its the first time we have future proofed our team in a while no matter how poorly its working out thus far.

I would take Hendo any day of the week over Jones, even playing poorly as he is at the moment.

So far as I can tell, Jones can't mark, his leading and running patterns are ordinary, kicking is average, appears to have no tank and no second effort. The thing that really bugs me about him is his demeanor. He plays footy as if he's doing a great job, as if he's pleased with his efforts. I've never seen him filthy on himself, never see any agro, never see any..... anything. I expect he's completely forgotten about the match as soon as he's in the car.

Incredibly irritating player for mine.

I admire you optimism Thry but I suspect that your judgement is out on this one.

I would love Jones to succeed and I agree that he has the physical attributes to to be an very good key forward.  Unfortunately, he doesn't seem to have the football nous required and I reckon he will be making up the numbers in the NBs for the balance of his contract.

I would have loved him to succeed as well, and he has taken a few grabs, kicked a couple of goals, but if your side is beaten by 130 odd points and you are dropped , with out any other forwards coming in , it's not saying much?

I would take Hendo any day of the week over Jones, even playing poorly as he is at the moment.

So far as I can tell, Jones can't mark, his leading and running patterns are ordinary, kicking is average, appears to have no tank and no second effort. The thing that really bugs me about him is his demeanor. He plays footy as if he's doing a great job, as if he's pleased with his efforts. I've never seen him filthy on himself, never see any agro, never

see any..... anything. I expect he's completely forgotten about the match as soon as he's in the car.

Incredibly irritating player for mine.
Absolutely nailed it re the "demeanor" he does do one thing a game , a mark, goal etc , and seems to be satisfied , done enough feeling , rest of the game seems like an exaggerated show of going through the motions with out any impact on the game.

I don't think there's anything wrong with his attitude, I just don't think he's up to AFL standard.
Plenty of players play 40, 50 or 60 games then disappear, he's going to be one of them along with a few others currently in our senior side.

Watching the North game from 2013 this morning and Watson actually played okay, his field kicking was superb.
