One of the few true gentlemen of sport & possibly the most undervalued champions in Australian sport history, golfer, Peter Thomson passed away today.
Someone doesn't win 5 x British opens against the likes of Nicklaus, Palmer & Gary Player without being something special. His game was honed on the rougher courses in Australia & it was on the English & Scottish links style of course that his shotmaking excelled.
Wonderful commentator as well, was always the voice of Golf here in summer.
Anyone attend either of the two Nitro's so far ? Looks really good on the TV. I love the concept & while they're obviously ironing out some early issues it comes across as quite entertaining, and without all the usual waiting around that is part of a regular Athletics meet.
Mind you, as an ex-distance runner....I would not like the middle distance events on offer ....they are brutal !
Hey all, what the hell is going on over there !!! Far out, I hope that everyone here is OK . as well as friends & relatives. Sadly, there are some people who are going to be heartbroken this afternoon.
For me, this was a complete revelation, I had never heard this story before ! What an unbelievable future this would have meant for Princes Park & the club if this had indeed come to fruition, and would have if not, it appears, for the pig headedness & very questionable political interference of the then Victorian premier, Mr Cain.
Imagine another 80 000+ seat stadium located at Princes Park from 1956 ?
The MCG would have ceased to have a hold over the VFL/AFL in any way Waverley might never have been built Docklands might not even exist Carlton's home ground & financial future would have been secured for a very long time
Not good news form the SCG. Phil Hughes has been struck by a bouncer attempting to hook. He collapsed by th side of the pitch, was given mouth to mouth & has been rushed to hospital in a critical condition:
Richie Porte doing a great job as stand-in lead rider at Sky after Froome crashing out early in the event .......and as added interest, here's a quote from his latest tour diary entry !.....
"The only Aussie fans who may not cheer for me so much are Collingwood AFL fans. But I’m a Carlton supporter, so I can totally see where that is coming from and they would understand what I mean there … But that's footy, and another story!"
Extra reason to get behind him ..........he's a Tassie lad as well BTW..
Anyone else do this on the weekend ? Came up from Tassie to run it & have to thank Melbourne for an absolute belter of a day weatherwise & also for a very well run & relaxed event.
Shame the running wasn't quite as classy.
Mind you, it was good enough to have a guilt free session at a few venues around Brunswick that arvo.
