Great effort from Cunners and Doc in particular. God, if we could kick straight!

Incredibly bad 50 m penalty. Eddie was taken out!
Philp needs a bit more time, but he showed some nice things. But he just couldn't put them together.

FMD! If not for inaccurate kicking, we win by plenty. They really need to fix that, seriously. Absolute sitters from Cunningham (twice), Gibbons (twice). Very costly.

Murphy’s cool head was important in the finish. Setterfield  was involved, but still not strong enough, Gibbons great, Levi important, McGovern better, Cunningham BOG, backs tight, Pittonet makes us forget about club stalwarts, Walsh involved. We lost structure when we lost Silvagni as a tall.

Costly but fixable. Remember we now have a bit of competition for spots too.

Any win against the Drugcheats 💉 is a sensational inspirational phenomenon of the greatest kind. Anytime, anywhere, anyhow 🎆🎆🎆

My favorite part was the emotion shown by Captain Cripps. It really means something to him and he didn't carry the team. The win came from an undermanned side.

Hopefully we'll get an apology from the AFL for that hideous 75m penalty against Eddie.

I'll be thrilled to include Cunners, McGovern, and of course Doc in my votes. Although it was a great team effort. That's the biggest area of growth imo. They no longer play like individuals. They are a cohesive unit, particularly down back. You can see they trust and will protect their team mates. This is the beginning of the next phase....

Cheers Bluebaggers 🍾🍻☕

MCG is 171m long.

The centre is 85.5m from the goals.

Betts was 20m from goal (at best). That was a 65m+ penalty.

JW said where we're at as clubs is pretty similar. That's delusional.

Essendon have gone foreign legion short cut and ended up with no key position players at all. Still playing McKernan who's no good and Hooker who is cooked.

We've invested in youth.

How good is doc. The bloke has had 2 acls missed 2 years of footy and comes back after 4 rounds as good if not better then he was!  Has lost no speed at all. I said to my daughter in the last few minutes I always feel a little better in the close ones with him on the ground. An absolute star.

With Cripps having a quiet one it was a good sign to still get over the line.  If we had converted even half of the chances we blew it was a comfortable win. And they Made every post a winner.  Reckon Teague out coached Worstfold too - we blocked the middle as obviously there pace was our concern but made it much harder this week to find space in the fifty as less options when coming from one side.

I reckon next week against saints will be a similar gameplan. Have to play wide again and squeeze the ground and block the middle - they have a quick midfield so reckon Fisher will come in.

Crippas reaction after the win and in the rooms sums up how much this one meant. Building momentum.

Definitely good to win. We've got another gear to go to though. The first 3 qtrs against Geelong / last 3vs Melb. We need that for 4 qtrs. Didn't touch that level tonight. Will need it against the Saints who ar in good Nick.

Equal 4th on the ladder without hitting top gear yet.

Martin had a stinker. Philp is obviously a bit raw but showed glimpses. Missed Jack. Seriously missed Harry - hurt our structure a lot.

Pito is just a star already. Cunningham - I've always been a believer - BOG.

Cripps looks like he's carrying a knee injury.

I know i'm biased. I know I've had a fair few drinks, but f me some of the crape that is paid against us during a game you just don't see. It's just diabolical. Just a non-decision here or a WTF there. I just can't fathom it. I just don't get it. Really interested to see if anything gets said about the last 50m (well it was supposed to be 50 but looked like 80) penalty. Something I've not seen before.
Well done Cunningham. I hope it's not a flash in the pan.
Levi, biggest comeback since Lazarus.
Our backline is just fantastic. We used to win premierships back in the 80's with dominant backlines.
We really were so much better than that rabble but somehow managed to nearly find a way to lose it, but we didn't. So have we improved?
Pittonet could be the pick-up of the year.
So an innocuous sucker punch by Merret sends a bloke to hospital. Can't wait to hear the debate on this one.
Well done Blues. The football world will sleep well tonight in the knowledge that the cheats have received their just desserts.
Time for another beer and replay review.

I'll take any win Vs the drug cheats.  Particularly pleased to see second tier players like Cunningham play a complete game.

That free and 50 + penalty against Betts. ...FMD..  Talk about manufacturing a result,  that umpire has a lot of explaining to do.   Disgraceful effort.  A minute to go and pulls that stunt?!?

Very average game but always nice to win a game that we easily could have lost

Doc, Casboult, Cunningham & Pittonet were good, whilst a number had good moments.

Unfortunately Philp was overawed

Plowman & Newnes average at best

Silvagni and Philp out for McKay and Fischer this week

I was surprised to see the frees 13 - 13.
It seemed there were several non decisions that hurt us. Jack Martin's tackle well i50 where he pulled his opponent back forcing a fresh airy. Exactly what Eddie won us the game with last week 🤬

Tidy up the goal kicking and we're well on our way. SOJ early injury hurt our fwd line.

Again we won all the important contests. Pitto is like Crippa's PA. Service with a 🙂

Walsh had a better game. Jack had a fumble fest, and Ed had a cracker. He's worth his weight as a tagger. Showed up Sheils a beauty.

Great win by the Bluebaggers and I will have more to say about that in due course  :)

I was watching the game with Mrs DJC who grew up as an Essenscum supporter but is now more or less agnostic.  During the third quarter, she asked, “Why are the commentators so biased against Carlton?”

Now, I accept that the commentators are paid/trained to maintain interest in the game and stop people changing channels, but they should do that in an impartial manner.

I guess I tune out a lot of the anti-Carlton stuff but to hear an impartial observer point it out reinforced the muppet status of Seven’s commentators 😡

I should add that Shiel’s post game interview was all class.  It’s a pity that he picked the wrong club.

Take the win especially as Cripps wasn't the driving factor... bit of credit to Murphy who setup two goals when we were struggling.
Levi played another great game and Cuningham earned his BOG status.
Gibbons showed again why VFL players are well worth considering and has become very consistent.
Docherty led the back line well and SPS got plaudits from me for his work on Tipper.
Deserved some luck at the end, couldn't believe it was Townsend with that mark given
he kicks like an arrow and thought we were going to be robbed again but justice prevailed.

Our backline is class, if I had to be picky Plowman is a worry especially when isolated. He fills his shorts and gives away a free 9 times out of ten. Playing quick sides is also a worry, structure is vital to stopping them, get that worng and we look slow. The Aints will trouble us next week, the only consolation is that it's not at Basketball Stadium, Carlton plays much better at the G. Poor old Philpy was lost at sea, he'll be better for the run. Anyone who thinks Murph is soft watch the game. Carlton MUST address goalless qtrs and easy set shot misses.

They probably were kids when we so arrogantly dominated the competition in the 70s, 80s, and 90s. Still, their brains are too small to even understand concepts like impartiality and professionalism.
Equally intriguing though is why they love The Cheaters so much? Makes me think there was so much more to the drugs scandal then we’ll ever know. Which other clubs disinfect their post-2000 silverware every night trying to remove the dank smell that pervades the cabinet?

Totally mystifies me as well. The number of times commentators want to “have another look at that one” when Carlton get “lucky” (Casboult’s mark) compared with blatant transgressions by opponents (Tippingwuti cannons into Levi’s back in Q1 with no eyes for the ball a la Reiwoldt) which don’t even warrant a comment?!?

What is going on? Is it as simple as subliminal subconscious bias?

1. The commentators were barracking for Essendon. They wanted the victory against adversity to be real. Now the narrative is Carlton are on the rise. Turn off the sound on TV and just watch the vision.
2. Worsfold claim their list is similar to Carlton's in age demographic and games played is a case of using a statistic to deflect. To understand a list you need to look at who is not playing. We had Dow (Pick 3), O'Brien (Pick 10), Kennedy (Pick 13), McKay (Pick 10), De Konning (Pick 30), Stocker (Pick 13), Kemp (Pick 17), Marchbank (Pick 6), Fisher (Pick 27), Curnow (Pick 12) and Goddard (Pick 19). I am not sure Essendon, or anyone else, has that young talent depth. As Silvagni said, it is easy to get a list to the middle.
3. The 50 meter penalty will be ticked off by the AFL as it always does. Umpires are criminals and the AFL is the Mafia
4. We need to kick those goals. Could have won by three or four goals easily. Kept Essendon in it.
5. The next few weeks will be important. We will need to get ahead of the W-L count.

Murphy cops a lot on here yet it was his skills that set up our last 2 goals when we were looking for someone senior to lift.

He maybe at the end of his career but he is still important to us - has his flaws but we don’t exactly have in spades those who when the game is on the line can pinpoint a pass under pressure like he can.

Cunningham casboult doc all played big games but Murphy’s last 5 mins were just as important to secure the win.

I omitted to add that even though he faded, Kade was very good early.  Swept up very well.

The players were also clearly given roles and they were well thought out beforehand.

Mentioned Murphy too and while he hasnt been a tackling machine he setup those goals when we were looking a bit under the pump and they changed the game.
Bit of kudos to McGovern too, didnt light up the stat sheet but his attack on the ball was excellent, kicked a couple of  vital goals and that one mark where he could have been cleaned up showed courage and he earned his money, not sure how Francis who was his opponent got into the best for EFC either.
Both Murphy and McGovern have been on my hit list a bit but played important minutes last night and impacted like they should..

I watched the replay of the last couple of minutes several times and Eddie does take off before Saad leaves the goal square.  However, he started a couple of metres from where the mark was and had probably just crossed it fractionally before Saad played on.  Technically, it’s a correct decision and the AFL will support the umpire.

The thing is, Eddie’s actions were inconsequential, particularly when he had no chance of affecting Saad’s run or disposal.  50 metres is a huge penalty for an action that has no effect on the game.  The context of the game made it an even bigger penalty.

As for the length of the penalty, is wasn’t 90 metres; more like 70  ::)

No problem if they apply that rule consistently....But I suspect the player moving forward of the mark before the player kicking out has left the square happens regularly.

Is that 1 week out for Jack or 1 week suspension for Merrett?

If it’s the latter, I reckon an intentional strike to the body with severe impact is 3 weeks minimum.

Yep, whichever way you spin it, it's 6/14 for Bolton and 7/14 for Teague, from their first 14 games. Given the maturity of the list, throwing development out the window, bringing in older players etc., it's not exactly the stuff of dreams. And don't forget a few of those wins are by 1 or 2 points. The Melbourne, Cats and Essendon games were absolutely 50/50, and either team could've won - just luck to be on the right side of the scoresheet when the siren sounds.

If the free kick was from before Saad "played on" then it had to have been in the goal square which means he was less than 9 metres from the goal line. The penalty brought Essendon to the centre of the ground which is 85 metres from the goal line so the penalty was a minimum of 76 metres. Of course Saad was well outside of the goal square when the free was paid.

Agree, the swinging fist in the tackle has gone on for too long and needs the same treatment as the jumper punch in terms of weeks.
Jack Silvagni would be sore, that's a nasty injury when you are not expecting a hit there and are not able to cover up and brace yourself. Is that a professional tackle or a cheap snipe to use the fist?

I believe the rule states that the 50m penalty is from the mark so the new mark should be 70m (or 69m) from the goal line.

Any talk of Weitering or Simpson being back line generals or holding the back line together are premature at best, erroneous at worst. The difference Docherty makes to that back 6 could be spotted from the moon. Those bloody knees cost Bolton his job.

Yes and no......and no.

Weitering and Simpson have both been in (are in) the leadership group and do well down back.
Of course the addition of Docherty adds another layer to it.
Boltons job (not that you bring him up in every post) was his to lose.....and he lost it. Remember i was in his corner right up until the week before he was sacked. It was inevitable.

Absolutely flabbergasted that Merrett only gets 1 week.

Schofield gets a week for a headbutt - intentional... the victim plays on, Silvagni is out for the game and probably two more - a cost of 3 games.

And for those who argue that Merrett's was careless conduct and not intentional I say, unmitigated bullsh1t. He intended for his fist to hit Silvagni's body, and it did, and it damaged his body to the extent that Silvagni suffered and will lose games.

Put another way, had Greene done what Merrett did, what would be the punishment?

This matter should go further, but that would require Gil having a pair.

So it happens 15 times a game... so how often does it result in a broken bone and a bruised major organ? If those 15 other 'love taps' are comparable to what Silvagni had happen to him does that mean we're losing 15 blokes a game? The comparisons and logic are foolish and just plain dumb.

Cheats.com.au came to play, which made our victory just that bit more meaningful.

We were a 3-5 goal better side and must bring more efficiency and composure up forward and general ruthlessness.

I reckon this was the 'break out' game for Cuningham. I have been strong in my criticism of his inability to do more than give a few terrific/teasing cameos per game. This game was his. He had more attention after half time and was quietened a little and he will learn from that and understand that with his improvement will come attention. But last night he announced himself as a ridgy-didge dangerous mid. His reflex disposals to advantage, either by hand or foot, were sublime. Now to repeat this, week in, week out.

As I mentioned elsewhere, I hope Philp gets another senior gig now that first game nerves are gone. He showed things later in the game which were worthy of perseverance... but... his post game interview had hints of 'back to the Magoos' to learn more.

Still not convinced on Newnes. Setterfield, my other 'not sure' bloke, did more but these 'kick and hope' disposals have to stop. His disposals by hand are really good... still seems hesitant at times.

Murphy stepping up with great decisions well executed under serious heat in the final qtr were simply sensational. Brilliant.

Winning when Crippa is going along just okay is important, very important, in the development of this side.

We need to really put away a few sides to cement this growing belief. Not out of the 'psychological woods' (re consistency/handling pressure) yet... should have put cheats.com.au out of business in the third, looked like a little too much over-eagerness and perhaps even not quite coming to grips with how damn good we are when we're 'on.' Real belief is when you get in front and build on the lead - foot on throat syndrome/killer instinct... still a little brittle in the 'ruthless' area and we have to have that to be a finals threat.

We have a number of blokes who's form is a worry.   Walsh.   Plowman - gees he coughs up some goals and SPS - he's picking and choosing too much for my liking.

Not matter what the AFL says,  that penalty against Betts was just wrong.   If anything,  he was checked - illegally too I might add.  We always play 21 against that mob.

What happened to the old "EAST WEST"

No players were allowed to be east or west of the man on the mark. Had to be behind him, not to the side.
So the ump should've told the kicker to go back and do it again AFTER he removed the bloke who blocked him.

The media cans Clarkson for saying the game style is trashing the brand, then you get a turd burgler like Michael Gleeson write rubbish like this;
Quote
Carlton’s victory over Essendon was delivered by accident. The most effective ‘falcon’ the game has seen ensured that what would have been the match-winning goal was touched on the line by Liam Jones’ face.

Maybe it touched fingers on the way through to Jones but it was the bounce off the bonce that made sure the kick was not a goal.
Firstly, he paints doubt with the "Maybe" rubbish, despite video showing the ball deflected off hands into Jones' head! Then he credits the event as the Falcon that saved the world!

Jones is lucky it didn't bounce off his bonce back towards the field of play!

If you want to uncover what is wrong with footy, start with these overpaid hacks using the media as a platform to drive opinion!

If you think I'm going too hard at Gleeson, this is what he writes about McKay being out.
Quote
Casboult was a player without position for periods last year as he was used variously as a forward, in the ruck and, out of desperation, in defence. He was squeezed out by the emergence of Harry McKay and Curnow and the arrival of Mitch McGovern all in the forward line.

Presently he is keeping McKay out of the side and easing the pressure on McGovern.
Only someone who doesn't follow our club or barely watches a game could swallow this tripe!

Reminds me of Lonergan taking Carazzo out of a game, you can't rely on the AFL. Sometimes you just have to take things in your own hands and make the opposition understand you won't put up with cheap snipes and Merrett needed a lesson during the game so he didn't apply that type of tackle again..

I was just watching the Simmo highlights on the club website and it featured his tackle on Zaharakis in the last quarter.  I guess a ball up is a reasonable result for a very good tackle but what about the Essendon bloke that tackles Simmo.  Zaharakis still has the ball so surely that is a free kick to Simmo   ::)
I've always been critical of this tactic (most clubs do it) where a 3rd player comes in and 'tackles' the tackler. I agree that this act should be penalised.

Further to this, it's reported SOJ will miss up to 6 weeks.
How 🤬 careless. CFC must take a stand on this.

Really. wow.

Poor fella. Will be alright though?

Reminds me of Lonergan taking Carazzo out of a game, you can't rely on the AFL. Sometimes you just have to take things in your own hands and make the opposition understand you won't put up with cheap snipes and Merrett needed a lesson during the game so he didn't apply that type of tackle again..

I'll never forget that game and moment.

Carrots had been in exceptional form, like best in comp form....

The take out was orchestrated imo.

I thought Lonergan was a gutsy little player up until that moment - hated him ever since.

'Sliding doors' moment'
A tackle that changed the course of history.
There's a chance Brett Ratten would still be our coach if not for that tackle. ;)

We'd started the season like a house on fire.
Beaten Richmond and Brisbane and demolished Collingwood.
Carrazzo had been arguably our best player.

Ratten got a 'bee in his bonnet' about the size and strength of the Bombers (little did we know) that led to a falling out with  Justin Cordy.

Carrazzo's injury was one of the first in a string that would seriously weaken the side to the extent they were a shadow of the Round1-3 side by the end of the year and Ratten was history.

Not just Ratten.

I still feel guilty to this day for giving Adrian Gleeson a gob full of vitriolic Men vs Boys crap as he left "The G" that very evening, I think he was Director of Football at the time! Later I heard that he had allegedly unloaded on the players and coaching staff in the rooms after the game at what he thought was an unacceptable effort, so perhaps he shared my mindset. I'm lucky he didn't break my nose in the Carpark!

But what else could we think, nobody had come across the CheatsFC level of Cheating before?

Interesting to see SoJ telling the media he wanted to go back on but was over-ruled by the club doctors.

It's probably just a sign of the way the world is going to change long term after this COVID-19 situation.

Previously it was risking further damage and a longer hospital stay, but there are now very very good reasons to minimise hospital visits, and especially a visit with potential lung damage. So I suspect across the board we'll see club medicos being far more cautious in making these decisions.

I simply don't buy the bravado from SOJ, but understand it's good, politically.

Players say these kinds of things to 'look after' opponents and attempt to minimise their injury to help the other bloke and stay in the team. Unlike we supporters who don't have to keep up appearances... Merrett's strike deserved more than a week, and he's a pr1ck.

Merrett is someone who does this sort of 'tackle' habitually. Hopefully he will learn from this. But, then, he is a Drug Cheat. That makes learning difficult.

Fair enough. I'm sure it happens, personally I reckon Jack being Jack genuinely wanted to get back on, probably to give Zac a fresh one across the chops.

Well Thry, who amongst us is willing to disagree with the opinion of our better halves?

I reckon Mrs Thry is on the money  :)
