Disappointed to see Jess Gedi out; he was good last week.
Voting is as usual: you have 15 votes to award pretty much as you will, with the following provisos: [1] 15 votes in total, no more, no less. [2] No more than 10 votes for any one player (even Sam Walsh or Patrick Cripps) [3] Three players at least must get a mention. [4] A grade for the game, A+ (what I want to see) to F-.
AFL Rd 6: Carlton vs GWS Rating: A An injury depleted team takes on an undefeated one and, but for a ten-minute period in the 2nd quarter, crushes them. We certainly picked up after last week’s failures.
Votes: I know we have 15 votes to play with, but there simply aren’t enough to reward everybody adequately. [3] Patrick Cripps [3] Sam Walsh [1.5] Marc Pittonet [1.5] Tom de Koning [1] George Hewett [1] Matthew Kennedy [1] Jordan Boyd [0.5] Brodie Kemp [0.5] Matthew Cottrell [0.5] Harry McKay [0.5] Ollie Hollands [0.5] Charlie Curnow [0.5] Nic Newman
Explanations: [3] Patrick Cripps: One of the great games: 39 possessions, 13 clearances, 7 tackles. Crippa did it all. [3] Sam Walsh: Almost as good as Cripps, which says something. 35 possessions, 6 clearances and 4 tackles. [1.5] Marc Pittonet: One of Marc’s best ever games. He not only dominated the taps, he got the ball around the ground. [1.5] Tom de Koning: 3 goals in itself would be a great return, but his ruckwork really shows how much he has improved. [1] George Hewett: Most other week, George’s numbers would be worthy of 3 votes. An excellent game! [1] Matthew Kennedy: Celebrated his 100th game in style, bot on the ball and in defence after injuries to Williams and Weitering. [1] Jordan Boyd: Played a lot of the game on Toby Greene and minimized his effectiveness. [0.5] Brodie Kemp: Superb job in defence. [0.5] Matthew Cottrell: Not huge possessions, but almost every time he got the ball we scored. [0.5] Harry McKay: Started slowly, but showed how dominant he can be in the air. [0.5] Ollie Hollands: Started slowly, but came into the game and did some really clutch things. [0.5] Charlie Curnow: 3 goals 4 points: should have been 7 goals. [0.5] Nic Newman: Another Nic Newman game. You know what you get each week with Nic.
Honourable Mentions: Elijah Hollands: Possession were down a bit, but 2 great goals and a solid performance. Lewis Young: Stepped up when it was needed. Very good. Jacob Weitering: Struggled with injury, but still did a job. Lachie Cowans: I wanted to give Cowan votes. He did an excellent job and showed a lot of poise and determination. Zac Williams: Apart from one bad mistake, Zac was pretty good until he was injured.
Binns, Cincotta and Sam Durdin named as emergencies for the seniors. One of those will probably not play VFL: probably Cincotta. Akuei and Billy Wilson available. Wilson is an immediate 'in'. Not so sure about Akuei. He has had a pretty ordinary start to the year.
[1] Disappointed that Tyson Sruk didn't play. he was named but ... If we're trying to hide him, then we've been so successful that I have no idea if he can play or not. Same can be said of Ferronato, but he is, at least, playing. 10 possessions, 4 clearances, 4 tackles. I wouldn't be selecting him from what I've seen.
[2] Zavier Maher played his best game in our colours. 34 possessions, 6 marks, 5 clearances, 2 tackles. Not sure if he can go all the way, but I am very happy to see him play like this. With so few AFL listed guys available, he stepped up and played as our #1 mid.
[3] Binns had a good second half. he was quiet early, but ended up with 27 possessions. 8 clearances and 3 tackles. Binns is doing more of a midfield job this year, not just running up and down the wing.
[4] Lemmey developing nicely as a key defender. he shows a lot more passion and desire in defence.
[5] Jess Gedi played his first game for us today. 16 possessions, but 8 tackles. Not bad for a debut.
[6] Alex Mirkov is very much a work in progress. In the centre square he dominated. Not so effective at ball ups around the ground, but he is coming from a long way back. It will be quite a while before he gets full strength back, not to mention the tank to run out a game. Hudson O'Keefe was also good in the ruck, but he needs another 10 kg of muscle on him.
Charlie has the athleticism to do much more but he doesn't chase hard after an opponent with the ball anywhere near as hard as he chases a loose ball that he thinks he can possess.
Indeed. It is Charlie's biggest weakness and one he needs to address. Fev was the same for a while, but once he got used to using his strength and pace, he got good frees from tackling and chasing.
AFL 2024 Rd 5: Carlton vs Adelaide We were unlucky to lose, but we panicked for the first time this season. had we kept our nerve, we would have won.
Trends: [1] There were 12 voters this round, which isn't that bad considering.
[2] The rating was a 7.22, which is an D+. A little harsh, perhaps, considering that we lost by 2 points in the last few seconds. But, we were expected to win and we should have, so people judged us accordingly.
[3]14 players managed a mention this week, which is 2 down on last week. Everybody contributes when we win, which wasn't quite how it worked out this time.
[4] The average vote this week was 24. The first time below 30 for the year and indicative of how down we were this round.
[5]3 players managed 100 votes or more this week. Even so, only one performance stood out.
[6] Sam Walsh managed 460 votes to be BOG this week. This was a Judd-like performance if there ever was one. Cripps and Acres came in at 2nd and 3rd, and neither of them had great games.
[7]One player managed votes from everyone this week. This is a rarity. But Walsh's game stood out. Nobody else's did.
[8] None of our youngsters stood out this week, which is disappointing.
[9] Only Walsh stood out. We struggled over the rest of the field.
Votes: Walsh, Sam 460 Acres, Blake 114 Cripps, Patrick 102 Curnow, Charles 96 Kennedy, Matthew 63 Kemp, Brodie 54 Hewett, George 48 McKay, Harrison 36 William, Zac 33 Boyd, Jordan 30 de Koning, Tom 18 Fantasia, Orazio 12 Newman, Nicholas 9 Pittonet, Marc 6
Progressive Votes: Patrick Cripps 1074 Harry McKay 890 Tom de Koning 581 George Hewett 575 Charlie Curnow 476 Sam Walsh 460 Mitch McGovern 434 Jacob Weitering 414 Adam Saad 310 Blake Acres 244 Adam Cerra 231 Brodie Kemp 197 Nic Newman 105 Matthew Kennedy 89 Jordan Boyd 89 Zac Williams 85 Lachie Fogarty 68 Matthew Cottrell 65 Jack Carroll 64 Elijah Hollands 59 Lewis Young 55 Matthew Owies 16 David Cuningham 13 Orazio Fantasia 12 Marc Pittonet 6 Ollie Hollands 6
[1] This was one of marc Pittonet's greatest games. He didn't just give his opponents a bath, but he had 7 clearances and 13 contested possessions. [2] Tom de Koning was excellent, but his best work was up forward with 3 goals. His snap on the right foot was a classic!
I think there is a spot for both of them, especially if we get the ball out of the middle. Very few teams can handle 3 marking options. God knows we struggle.
[3] I don't remember how many tackles we had in the first half, but we were well behind. The tackles pressure lifted enormously just before half time. We still ended up with only 52 to their 68, but ours in the second half were a lot more effective. It made a difference.
[4] We had more than 30 more contested possessions than GWS did. We owned the contested ball after half time. It was lovely to see.
[5] We managed to win with little output from Jacob Weitering, even thought he was quite good early. The other defenders stood up. I liked Cowan's game. Boyd was ordinary early, but stepped up, as was Lewis Young. Toby Greene had 18 disposals, but kicked only a point or two, and had very little impact on the game. His opponent, on the other hand, had a significant impact.
[6] Ollie Hollands had his best game for the year. Not yet to the form he was in last year, perhaps but he did important things at important times. Elijah was quieter, but his goals were a good reward.
[7] Cripps was super-human today, but Walsh wasn't far behind. For that matter, Hewett and Kennedy had excellent games.
