Title: AFLW R7 - Carlton vs Fremantle @Ikon - Sun 1:10pm
Post by: kruddler on March 07, 2021, 07:17:19 pm
Tough ask to come up against a rampaging Freo, especially after a thumping win against the Eagles by 11 goals. But this is our task.

At least we play on our home deck.

Looks like we'll be missing Mimi Hill after her knee injury today.
I reckon Al Downie could be an out (3rd week running?) due to form and perhaps injury after her hit today.

Bring in Harris and.....i'd like to say Brooke Walker, but i think she is 1 more week away unfortunately.
They will probably bring in Jess Edwards, although i'd probably prefer to blood some new blood.....maybe Winnie Laing gets the call up to help in the midfield. Potential to welcome back Daisy Walker too.  Otherwise Courtney Jones could add some pace.

Thank you, K, for those insights.

Dare I come up with this cliche, but... in many respects this game against Freo is a final for us. Lose and it's curtains for season 2021, win and we're still in with a show...

Apart from their game against Adelaide, this will be Fremantle’s first real away game and first game on the eastern seaboard.  That should give us an edge but we will have to be switched on at the start of the game.

I've done a bit of a ladder predictor type of thing to spell it out to everyone on what we need to do to make finals. Hopefully the format is able to be understood.

Carl - 12 points
Freo - loss *key game
GC - win
GWS - win
------
TOTAL - 20 points

WB - 16 points
NM - loss *key game
Ade - loss
Rich - win
------
TOTAL - 20 points (24 points if they beat NM)

Mel - 16 points
Ade - loss
Freo - loss *key game
Bris - loss
-------
TOTAL - 16 points

NM - 16 points
WB - win *key game
Bris - loss
Freo - loss *key game
-------
TOTAL - 20 points (16 points if they lose to WB

FREO - 20 points
Carl - win *key game
Mel - win *key game
NM - win *key game
------
Total - 32 points

Conclusion....
1. We want Freo to win against Melbourne, and NM. It helps us....even if we lose against them.
2. Melbourne are the most likely to miss out, possibly losing all 3 from here.
3. The WB/NM game is an important one. If dogs win and the other WB/NM games go to plan, it will come to down to %, NM clearly above us and Dogs. We could potentially rope in the dogs %. If NM beat dogs, % won't be an issue.
4. We need Adelaide and Brisbane to stay strong and beat these types of sides around us. Especially against the dees.

To sum it all up.....we should beat GC comfortably, and if we want to play finals, beating GWS should enable that. The match against Fremantle, will certainly help, but is not essential.

Hope all that makes sense.

Interesting to see if Brooke Walker comes straight back in, but I'd think so, if she is fit she is picked!

She is officially available for selection.

Surely she comes back in once deemed available.

Absolutely!

It’s a shame we can’t bring Dalton back too.  Haven’t they cancelled the Olympics yet?  ::)

Even if we could, we've replaced Daltons spot on the list.

Wishful thinking Kruddler - Dalton and Walker complemented each other with their aggressive running.

Add in Gee and there is always someone that the opposition cannot keep up with.

Gee is just on her own though, she gets marked closer than anyone outside of maybe Prespakis.

Walker and Gee in the same team should make life a little easier for Georgia 🙂

It would be nice if the AFL put out some football records for the ladies. I usually put a lot of notes, as well as the scoring in them and have suffered form their absence.
I don't remember the team list come game time.

Shame about Brooke.

I thought Madeline Guerin was OK last week, and she's another one with a good turn of speed.

I thought Guerin was quite decent last week. For all that, Daisy Walker has been good as well, and she isn't slow.
Brooke Walker looks like she isn't going to see much of this season, which really hurts us.

Mind you, having Melbourne beat Adelaide is going to make things interesting. The top is a very crowded territory.

Girls have made a great start against the 2nd on the ladder Freo,

3.4 to 0.1 late in the first.

Have all the play and the pressure is through the roof.

O'Dea nearly got her head knocked off from a stray moody kick.

AN opposite 2nd quarter with doctors getting all the play.

Slight breeze left of screen making it a scoring end.

3.5.22
2.3.15

Only 2 points scored to right of screen.

Good arm wrestle of a match.

I was just about to say whoever gets the next goal will have momentum....and the umps pinged Harrington for running too far. I reckon thats the first time i've seen that in a womens match. Of course, a goal results.

Commentators seem to be on our side today. Calling for a few 50's we never got as well.

Bang. Quick score, Gee roves off the back and doesn't miss.

35-25 with 4 mins to go in the 3rd.

Pressure turned up to 11 from both sides.

14 points up, 6 minutes to go.
Freo have the breeze.
We have the lead.

Will come down to the wire.

edit: Dockers kick a quick 3 goals.

4 points down with only a few minutes to go.

Our season on the line.
Will we stand up?

4 point loss.

Shattering.

Tough to make finals from here given the other results went against us.

Dockers currently sit on top of the ladder. No shame in losing against them and we can hold our head up high.

Can't help but think a bit of extra run from Brooke Walker is exactly what we needed.

Yep, lost at the MC.

btw., How can that not be a trip to Prespakis, clear open play and player's leg trips the person in front of them, accidental or not does not matter, that cost us a goal?

The losses early in the year are what cost us. In the end  reality is we haven’t been able to live up to high expectations. Not up to the level of the top teams.

There was plenty of decisions (and non-decisions) that cost us a goal (or got them a goal) and that wouldn't rate in the top 10 IMO.

I thought overall that the umps were good. Things went against us in the last, and against the breeze, it made things hard.

Losses early did cost us.
Not having Pound for the start of the year hurt more than people realise. Doesn't play a bad game does Pound.
Missing Walker for the whole year so far (and Dalton for the whole year) basically meant we had to change our style to compete.

Overall we've had a good year. Just haven't won the tight ones.

We lost to Collingwood by 6 points
We lost to Dogs by 6 points
We lost to Freo by 4 points
We lost to North by 22 points in the only disappointing game we've played......and we didn't have Prespakis for that one (or Loynes)

Add Walker and Dalton and i'd say we are a goal better side and all of a sudden we have only lost 1 game for the year.

Indeed. We have done what we could, but it hurts. We really should have won. We were the better team on the day. Unfortunately, when it counted in the last quarter, we couldn't produce. That has been consistent this year; our last quarters have been ordinary.

I'll comment more later, when I can get access to the stats.

Didnt watch it as I was out, I saw on the news we led all day only to lose it at the end. That's gut wrenching.

In terms of current form and current output, definitely Gee. Beyond that, it doesn't make sense to compare a part time female in a new competition with a male counterpart. But nobody will catch Betts - in the conversation as the best small forward of all time.

That was disappointing!

I thought that we were the better team, but some errors and poor decisions in the last quarter gave Freo a sniff.  With the wind at their backs, the Freo girls took full advantage.

Once again, the game was marred by inconsistent and inexplicable umpiring decisions.  Two incidents stood out for me.  Tayla Harris had a 50m penalty awarded against her for late but inconsequential contact after her opponent marked and quite rightly.  Later in the game, Mua Laloifi copped a deliberate knee in the kidneys well after she completed a mark and was obviously in pain but there was no penalty.  Several 50m penalties for encroaching on the protected area were missed but we got pinged.  I’m not suggesting that the umpiring cost us the game but the look of the game would be improved if umpires were more consistent and decisive.

I think that Grace Egan has been one of our better performers all season but there is one aspect of her game that really bugs me.  She seems to lack awareness that she is about to be tackled and, when she is tackled, makes no attempt to dispose of the ball.  She is a bit like Ed Curnow who is often pinged for not making an attempt.  I hope that our coaches encourage her to give the ball off before she is tackled and teach her how to get a handball or kick away when tackled.

Long term across the board, Carlton and Crows, then I agree.

But I don't think Betts has done enough exclusively in the Carlton #19 to better Pearce, it was a huge mistake not re-signing Betts when we let him go. Opposition fans will laugh at us for decades, I'm just hoping CheatsFC suffer the same fate with Fantasia and Daniher to at least shut them up!

btw., A nice way for Betts to end, a typical Betts goal in the dying moments to defeat CheatsFC, a Fraser Brown moment then a legend forever. Mic drop, and leave the building!

Hmm, I'm not sure LP. Pearce definitely played some good games for us, but on field I think Betts has him covered. And when you factor in all the crap he has to deal with from moron fans, his dodgy childhood, his marketability, his longevity, his mentoring of younger indigenous players etc., it's just not a contest IMO.

Eddie is an enthusiastic supporter of the AFLW and I think that he has attended all of our games ... and the Crows AFLW games when he was in Adelaide.  So there is a tenuous link  :)
