Title: AFLW 2020 - Votes
Post by: kruddler on February 07, 2020, 10:06:57 pm
To refresh peoples memory, the voting for the girls is different to that of the guys.

We use the traditional 3, 2, 1 method for votes (no splitting!)

So in a dominant win against the (other) 'old' enemy in R1, who deserves the 3, 2, 1?

It’s hard to pick three when so many played well and had significant influence on our performance.  I’m still pondering 🤔

3 - McEvoy
2 - Presparkis
1 - Loynes

I thought McEvoy played 4 quarters, which is why I have her ahead of Presparkis. For a first game McEvoy has already proven herself to be a significant recruit, and she'll get better when she used to playing in front of a crowd and at the AFLW speed. Seems to always have time and space when she gets the football, a bit like the Hyphen or Diesel!

Presparkis is very impressive when she gets on a role, but some of that came courtesy of the Nthmond coach releasing the tag, I thought she was well held early in the game when she got plenty of football but wasn't able to break away and do anything with it.

Loynes is a Selwood type, she does the unfashionable hard things at the right moment and keeps the team focused. Every team needs one of these type players, I suppose we are lucky as we have Loynes and the twins.

I agree with this totally. Basically every one of our girls did something and nobody really lowered their colours. However, it was such a even display that giving votes is very difficult:

[3] Maddy P: her disposal and her willing to get the first possession was excellent. And didn't the girls like it when she slotted that goal. 21 disposals , 7 more than anyone else, tells a real tale.
[2] Bree Moody: this was one of Moody's most effective game for us. She was excellent. her clearances from the middle were tha sort of thing that could win us matches.
[1] Tayla Harris: Dominated her position all night and provided a great target.

Honourable mentions:
Katie Loynes: a typical Loynes game. She is hard at the ball, took a couple of clutch marks and book the goal we really needed.
Lucy McEvoy: a really solid game for a first gamer. Her time was good, her skills were good and she looked very comfortable.
Sarah Hosking: an excellent game and deserving of a lot more mentions that I have written so far.

I find it hard enough to spread 15 votes around, acknowledging those who deserve a mention. Having to go '3, 2, 1' is very hard indeed. And in an even performance all the more so.
In my (rather original) opinion, I thought that young Georgia Gee played probably her more effect game for us. he pace, run and good disposal was pleasing, even though she did get caught badly twice and kicked to bad intercepts. I am very pleased with her progress.

3 - Moody - Set up the win with her dominance in the ruck and presence around the ground.
2 - Harris - Dominated her position and worked hard to bring others into the game.
1 - Loynes - Relentless in driving the team and leading from the front.

Apologies to most of the team and particularly Prespakis, Gee, Downie, McEvoy, Plane, Brazzale and Harrington.

If Harford can maintain that level of performance, we will be in for a good season  :)

Coaches votes for this game are in...and its fair to say i nailed it!   8)

10 Madison Prespakis (CARL)
7 Breann Moody (CARL)
6 Tayla Harris (CARL)
3 Grace Egan (CARL)
2 Phoebe Monahan (RICH)
1 Katie Loynes (CARL)
1 Charlotte Wilson (CARL)

I had Prespakis, Moody and Harris, in that order in my votes and that allows me to breathe a huge sigh of relief. I agonised over those votes for hours and changed my mind about 10 times. Finally settling on them.

I'll do the tally up and post the results in the next couple of days.

That assumes that the coaches know what they're doing ;)

I reckon Harf's votes would be a pretty good benchmark but I'm not sure that Hunter has much idea.

But we still need to vote.

Best 3, 2, 1 for this week?

Really irritated with this. But that is what happens when you play uninspired football. Next time might be different ...

Votes:
[3] Chloe Dalton: Started slowly, but really picked up her game trying to spark the team. Her run and chasing were excellent.
[2] Grace Egan: Another strong game for this young lass! 18 disposals and 11 tackles said it all. if her disposals had been more effective, it would be she who would have been our BOG.
[1] Kerryn Harrington: Very solid, but not quite as sure with her ball handling as she usually is.

Honourable Mentions:
Breeann Moody: One day things will really click for Breeann and she will be unbeatable. This wasn't one of this days. But her ruckwork was excellent.
Maddy P: We need to looks after her. She did well and her disposal is what we need.

3 - Egan
2 - Dalton
1 - J.Hosking

Thought Egan played well before her head knock, after that she kept cracking in but wasn't as effective using the footy, early she was very very good.

Not sure why we pushed Prespakis forward off the ball as she probably was the main midfield driver, I'm assuming Harf thought the heavy attention was starting to take it's toll.

This 3,2,1 is tough, today there was hardly a weak link!

Stevens was the hub of pretty much everything versus the Crows, no Stevens no Harris goals, no Stevens no Plane or Presparkis cleaning up on the wing. Stevens even more than once pushed up the field to give Hosking an out on the HBF when she had a case of the fumbles.

I can see why the Filth had Stevens as captain!

I went for 3 forwards in the end.
3 - Stevens
2 - Vescio
1 - Harris

That could've been in any order.

Also could've included Harrington, Pound, Wilson and Laloifi from the backline.
Prespakis, McEvoy and Egan from the middle.

2 things.

1. Stevens wasn't captain. She was in the leadership group. But yes, agree....and i was a big wrap for her recruitment.
2. Plane played a very good game.....but not as good as the commentators made out. There was at least 3 occassions where the commentators called Plane when it was in fact McEvoy. Not sure what kind of excuse you could make for them. Different heights, pretty different numbers 32 vs 13. They both had dark hair....which seems a rarity in the dyed blonde world of AFLW, but thats where the similarities end.

3 - Laloifi
2 - Dalton
1 - Stevens

Despite being significantly undersized and under strength, Laloifi never flinched once at the contest and was mostly clean under pressure, her best game by some margin. By working into space and not getting sucked into the contest it spread the Aints out and allowed Harrington, Wilson, Plane and Pound free to mop up a lot of misdirected footy from the Aints. Then when we had the footy she ran off the Aints and worked really hard to start a chain, she was clearly switched on yesterday.

Probably Dalton's best game as well, because in particular the first half was a very high standard.

Stevens is the linchpin now, opposition clubs will wake up to that soon, she gives our F50 some composure and makes things happen. If she had some equally aware and calm team-mates around her we'd probably would have kicked at least another 3 or 4 goals easily. We had less opportunity than the Aints, but Stevens helped turn them into more score.

Some mention to Harrington, Presparkis and S.Hosking, pressing forward might be the go for Sarah, but I don't think Harf is a formulaic coach.

Yesterday Presparkis, McEvoy and Egan played more sacrificial roles, which brought others into the game around them. Although for the first time this season our midfield probably lost the contest, our structure and rebound off the HBF was extraordinarily good. I hope the men watched the game!

Loynes is a superstar leader, not a female Judd but a Vandenberg/Selwood type, tell most players to stop an opponent and continue attacking and they can't or won't, they can do one or the other like Judd attacking but not really defending. Loynes did both comfortably and still lead the side strongly, her go is sacrifice and work ethic and she delivered it in spades yesterday.

I always find it difficult to give a 3, 2, 1 vote, as I likee to reward players who have made a significant contribution. Big surprise: very difficult again. In end I went for:
[3] Kerryn Harrington: Kerryn absolutely starred in defence and took excellent marks. She really produced some drive for us: her opponent just didn't know howto handle her.
[2] Maddy P: In and under, with excellent disposal and decision making. I could write this about her every week.
[1] Charlotte Wilson: Another excellent game in defence, with strong, sure marking and persistence.

Honourable Mentions:
Darcy Vescio: Really tried hard. Her improved effort since the Collingwood game has been a pleasure to watch.
Tayla Harris: Not a large number of possessions, but a real target who took some excellent contested marks. If we could get the ball out of the middle as the 'Aints did a few time, she would have a lot more goals.
Mua L: Mua is developing very nicely. her speed and athleticism is a joy to watch. Her kicking isn't. Few things frighten me more on the footy field.
Chloe Dalton: Her best game for the year, and a very telling one. Her run was brilliant and really broke open the 'Aints when we needed something.
Grace Egan: solid and persistent.
Sarah Hosking & Jess Hosking: you have to love what these girls bring to the table. Sarah's 2 goal were excellent.

Tough call this week.

Do we give votes for solid 4 quarter performance?
Do we give votes to those who stood up when the game was on the line?

3. Prespakis - Solid 4 quarters. Leading possession winner, as usual, and a goal to boot.
2. Gee - Smallest girl on the field, but the cleanest. She touches the ball and things happen. 6 tackles and kicked a goal too.
1. McEvoy - supposedly touchless in the first half. Ended up with 19 for the game. Her lift in output helped facilitate the comback

3 - Dalton
2 - Harris
1 - Prespakis

Dalton never stopped trying the whole game, and once the others around her started to match her intensity the whole side lifted.

Presparkis could have polled more, but she for me she panicked a bit and several times gave clean unhindered disposals directly to opponents, similar for Pound and Plane. Those two needed some of Dalton's or Harrington's composure.

Possibly the best game Harris has played for the club.
